Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Bottineau, ND

Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground welcomes pets throughout its wooded campsites with tent, RV, cabin, and yurt accommodations. Dogs must remain on leash in camping areas, though the park features a designated dog exercise area where pets can play off-leash. The park offers multiple campground sections including North Hill, South Hill, and Washegum Loop, with sites varying in privacy. Bathroom facilities remain clean and well-maintained, with shower buildings available in developed camping areas. Campsites near water access points allow convenient lake entry for dogs who enjoy swimming. The North Star primitive sites provide a more secluded option for tent campers with pets, though these areas only offer vault toilets rather than shower facilities.

The park's trail system provides excellent opportunities for leashed dog walking, with all trails well-marked and maintained through wooded terrain. Multiple hiking paths wind around the small lakes throughout the property, offering wildlife viewing opportunities for both campers and their pets. Strawberry Lake Campgrounds, located in Turtle Mountain State Forest, provides a quieter alternative with fewer visitors and a more rustic experience for pets and owners. The International Peace Garden, just 30 minutes from Bottineau, also permits pets at its campsites with both tent and RV options featuring full hookups. During summer months, mosquitoes can be problematic in this region, so pet owners should bring appropriate repellent to protect themselves and consider pet-safe options for their dogs during peak insect season.

    Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground

    Great Family-Oriented Spot

Stayed at Washegum campground overnight and although the camping spots were very close together there's a lot of vegetation and trees separating the lots. Beautiful playground right behind us, and an amphitheater as well. There's multiple hiking trails, a dog park, swimming area, and picnic areas as well! Very kid and dog friendly, we will definitely be visiting again.

    Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground

    Beautiful State Park

This State Park is in North Dakota near the Canadian border. With a very large body of water that has many amenities from fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding. There are bike & canoe/kayak rentals right outside the park and a couple different campgrounds to choose from inside the park, ours was just a few feet from the lake and fishing dock. Depending on which campground you choose you will either have a vault toilet or a more convenient bathroom with toilets & showers! Staff was very nice and accommodating. There was even an Ice cream truck that rolled thru everyday for the kiddos!

    Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground

    Beautiful lakeside campsites

A great place for getting in or on the water. Swimming next to campsites, boat launch site even closer. The playground is located next to picnic and bbq areas, all near the water and restrooms close by. Fishing docks are plentiful.

brought my kids and my dogs for a great time and wasn’t disappointed.

    Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground

    Birch Trees Everywhere!

This campground tucked away in the turtle mountains next to Lake Metigoshie is definitely worth the visit! The campground is located in a state park so rules do apply. Tents, rvs, cars are are easy to maneuver in and out with a pump station located in the park. The 4 season playground is home to a ski park near by with a brand new chalet and updated runs with a terrain park( depending on snow conditions) public beach access, hiking trails, snowmobile trails, and the International Peace Gardens located not to far away either! I recommend camping in the fall with tree colors! WOW!

    Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground

    Amazing campground!

We LOVE camping here! The North Hill campground is small, quiet, and perfect proximity to the water. Site 103 has good trees for 1 hammock. Toilet facilities are nice and clean. There is a great playground, and a great dog area! Our only complaint is the mosquitos, which are pretty unavoidable. Bring a great bug spray and your kayak and you’ll be set for an amazing camping trip!

    Denbigh Experimental Forest Dispersed

    Beautiful and fascinating but…

I loved this area. It really has the imagination going and seeing all the different kinds of trees planted in close range was very compelling. Beautifully maintained trails and a small network of unpaved roads. I took a delightful bike ride with my dogs and we really enjoyed this location. However, to say that we became infested with ticks is damn near an understatement. If ticks bother you (in this amount of tips would bother anyone) I do not recommend coming to this spot. I am not sure when tick season ends but if you are going to go go in the ticks are dead. It was hard for me to dock this place a star, but because of the ticks that is why I did so.

    Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground

    Beautiful place to camp.

I’m a tent camper. I stopped here for one night while taking the high line on a road trip. The drive in is hilly and has spectacular views. It is well worth the few extra miles. The camp is clean. It is very family oriented. There were many tent campers. I was in the Washgum Loop on campsite #66 and the interpretive trail and and a nice area to view the lake was right next to my campsite. If you had your own kayak you could definitely drop in from here. The park service personnel were exceptionally, happy, informative and kind. I walked the full Old Oak interpretive trail and the pamphlet that you pick up on the way in to camp was nice to have. There is poison ivy here. There was some on my campsite and some on the interpretive trail.

    Twisted Oaks Equestrian Campground

    Great for horses

Located across from Mystical Horizons. Spots are $10 plus $5 per horse. Individual corrals for horses plus hay and water provided. Spots are okay next to trees but not really shaded. 16 miles of trails one which goes to Strawberry Lake Campground. AMAZING trails. Non-potable water, toilets and campfire rings. Little to no cell reception (We had 1 bar). Only 1 other camper with us during the weekend. Very quiet. No reservations.

Guide to Bottineau

Lake Metigoshe State Park sits in North Dakota's Turtle Mountains, an elevated region forming a forested island amid the surrounding plains. Located just 14 miles northeast of Bottineau, this area contains numerous small lakes within a 20-mile radius. Winter temperatures regularly drop below zero, while summer camping season brings mild 70-80°F days.

What to do

Wildlife viewing: Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground offers multiple forest habitats for animal sightings. "Keep your eye out for the wildlife around you in the water," suggests Rudy W., who stayed in the cabins. Bird watchers should visit Denbigh Experimental Forest Dispersed where diverse tree species attract various bird species, though Emily S. warns, "to say that we became infested with ticks is damn near an understatement."

Water activities: Rent canoes, kayaks or paddleboards at Lake Metigoshe for exploring the interconnected lakes. "Canoe or kayaking in the area is a must," notes Rudy W. For a quieter paddling experience, try Strawberry Lake Campgrounds where Erica S. appreciates that you can "kayak, canoe paddle or fish without worrying about motor boats/noise."

International Peace Garden: Located 30 minutes from Bottineau, this unique attraction spans the US-Canadian border. "Stayed for two nights and didn't even see everything at the park," reports Mishawn M., who recommends bringing bikes to cover more ground. Elizabeth S. adds, "We like to choose sites surrounded by trees and this place does not disappoint."

What campers like

Private campsites: Many Bottineau area campgrounds offer wooded sites with natural barriers. At Lake Metigoshe State Park, Patti E. notes, "Camp sites are close but had trees and natural grasses so it feels like you are in your own private woods." Similarly, at the International Peace Garden, Elizabeth S. appreciates how "the sites are huge" and surrounded by trees.

Clean facilities: Metigoshe receives praise for well-maintained bathrooms and showers. J S. calls them the "nicest public showers we have ever seen!" At International Peace Garden, Mayra V. confirms "This is a very nice place with clean bathrooms."

Fishing opportunities: Multiple lakes provide fishing access. At Buffalo Lake County Park, Roger B. notes the presence of a "boat ramp and fishing pier." Strawberry Lake campers mention good fishing conditions, though Tanner G. advises visitors to the area to "bring water and $15 cash for overnight fee."

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Late spring through early fall offers optimal camping conditions, but brings insects. During summer at Pelican Sandy Recreation Area, Teresa T. found it "very well maintained" but notes it was "rustic and quiet." Ticks can be problematic in wooded areas, especially at Denbigh Experimental Forest.

Reservation systems: Lake Metigoshe State Park requires reservations, while Strawberry Lake operates first-come, first-served. Pierce County Fair Grounds provides electric hookups with Marilyn K. noting it offers a "grassy area" with "water spigot available" and "bathrooms were open and clean."

Accessibility issues: Some campgrounds have challenging terrain. At Denbigh Experimental Forest, Jenny P. warns about access problems: "Overgrown with dense two foot tall grass, could not find a place to park or even turn my little car around." Check with rangers about current conditions before visiting remote sites.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access: Lake Metigoshe has a sandy swimming area popular with families. Ason S. reports: "Great sandy beach & nice water!! Activities set up for families/kids each weekend. Nice playground between loops too." For a smaller beach experience, Erica S. describes Strawberry Lake as having a "small but clean beach area."

Playground locations: Look for camping loops near play structures. Buffalo Lodge Lake offers some family amenities though A M. cautions about swimming conditions: "I wanted to go swim but there was so much algae in the water after you wade out that I'd be afraid to get caught in them."

Pet friendly camping near Bottineau: Most area campgrounds welcome dogs. At Lake Metigoshe, Nikki M. confirms "brought my kids and my dogs for a great time and wasn't disappointed." Bring pet-safe insect repellent during summer months for both human and canine comfort.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Full hookups are limited in the region. Teresa T. notes the International Peace Garden provides "full hook ups and nice spots" though warns it's "definitely expensive. 25 to get in and then 25 to camp."

Leveling considerations: Some campgrounds have uneven terrain requiring blocks. The International Peace Garden offers concrete pads that Carrie H. calls "perfect" because "leveling is super easy!"
