Best Dispersed Camping near W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir
Several free dispersed camping options exist in the Pisgah National Forest near W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir. Old NC 105 provides multiple pull-off sites along a gravel ridge road with valley views. Most sites feature primitive fire rings and good cell service, though finding level ground can be challenging. Steele Creek offers creek-side camping with swimming holes and hiking access, providing quieter, cleaner sites compared to other areas. Upper Creek features numerous sites along a two-mile forest service road paralleling a creek, with opportunities for waterfall hikes nearby.
Road conditions vary significantly across these areas. Steele Creek has narrow, winding roads with some rough spots on switchbacks, while Old NC 105 has several washouts that may require high-clearance vehicles. As one camper noted, "The road wasn't as bad as I was expecting as a whole, but there were some spots that were rouuuuugh." Most camping areas lack amenities - no toilets, drinking water, or trash service. Sites fill quickly on weekends, particularly at Steele Creek where the best spots are often taken by Friday afternoon.
