Best Tent Camping near Mocksville, NC

Tent campgrounds near Mocksville, North Carolina range from established sites with basic amenities to more primitive tent setups along lakeshores. Lake Curriher Wilderness offers dedicated tent camping areas with both walk-in and drive-in access, situated approximately 30 miles east of Mocksville. The campground features tent-specific sites including an ADA-accessible option, while Basin Cove along the Blue Ridge Parkway provides more remote primitive tent camping opportunities.

Most tent campsites in the region feature dirt surfaces with minimal grading, and several require advance preparation. Lake Curriher's tent camping area consists primarily of an open field with limited tree cover, while the more secluded sites require hiking in with gear. According to one visitor, "It's the quietest stay we've had yet, though the regular tent loop is just one big open field with few trees around it, so there's absolutely no privacy." Primitive tent sites generally include fire rings and some provide picnic tables, but campers should verify water availability as several locations have non-potable sources only. Deep Water Trail Camp offers free primitive tent camping but requires appropriate vehicles for access.

Tent campers frequently appreciate the natural settings around Mocksville despite varying levels of solitude. Sites at Lake Curriher provide access to fishing opportunities and hiking trails, with one camper noting they "hike in to the remote campsite on the lake" for a more secluded experience. Early fall tends to offer more pleasant camping conditions with fewer crowds at most tent campgrounds. Walk-in tent sites typically provide greater separation from neighboring campers compared to the open field layouts at drive-in locations. Deep Water Trail Camp features multiple tent campsites along the riverside with access to hiking trails, though the road conditions can be challenging. One tent camper warned that "the drive down/up is a little sketchy" and recommended vehicles with some ground clearance for accessing these more remote primitive tent setups.
