Cape Hatteras National Seashore stretches 70 miles along North Carolina's Outer Banks, featuring shifting sand dunes and maritime forests with average summer temperatures reaching 85°F. The narrow barrier islands experience consistent winds, making camping preparation essential for securing tents and equipment. The area offers both oceanfront and soundside camping options with varying levels of amenities.
What to do
Fishing at Oregon Inlet: Access quality fishing spots at Oregon Inlet Campground, where sites are a short walk from prime beach fishing locations. "Nice quiet campground away from civilization but within a short 5min (not even) walk to the beach. Mostly a fishing spot (need a permit for that)," notes a visitor at Oregon Inlet Campground.
Beach activities for children: The natural dune systems provide entertainment for families with children. "The dunes are right next to the campsites and provided hours of fun—running, climbing, sliding, and just being wild and free. It's not every day your campsite is just steps away from natural sand playgrounds," shares a camper about their experience at Oregon Inlet Campground.
Water sports on Pamlico Sound: The calmer waters of the sound side offer ideal conditions for paddleboarding, kayaking and kiteboarding. "We got in during a tight time of year in the most sought after spot... Right on the sand just yards away from the water on the sound side. Sunset in your backyard," explains a camper at Camp Hatteras RV Resort.
What campers like
Accessible beach walks: Multiple campgrounds offer direct beach access via established walkways. "Easy access to beach, space for kids to play, bath houses and laundry are good (for a beach area) clean, quiet and inexpensive compared to surrounding campgrounds," reports a visitor at Camp Hatteras.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The coastal environment supports diverse wildlife observation opportunities. "We noticed a sign - which informs you that you pay by the person at this campground. We also noticed kayaks, surfboards and stand up paddle boards for rent! The rental hut was precious and the employee just as kind as can be," describes a guest at Rodanthe Watersports & Campground.
Sunset views from sound-side sites: Campsites along Pamlico Sound provide memorable evening views. "Love this place. Water front / sunset. Cool bar with a pool table right up the road. Good location. RV Park very well maintained and nice folk around," shares a visitor at Kitty Hawk RV Park.
What you should know
Variable cell service: Mobile connectivity fluctuates significantly throughout the area. "Super chill campground with amenities nearby. The internet is terrible so if you're working from home, have a hotspot. AT&T does much better in this area. We have Verizon and it was spotty. No streaming capability, but that makes for a tech free in the moment experience," explains a camper at Camp Hatteras.
Wind conditions: Strong coastal winds can impact camping equipment stability. "The wind was really strong and it made setting up our tent a challenge! Thanks to our friendly neighbors, they were able to get it grounded for us. Bring rope/canopy weight in case this happens," advises a camper at Rodanthe Watersports & Campground.
Fire regulations: Rules regarding fires vary between campgrounds. "There is also a swingset - perfect for younger kids - to be able to play on just a walk away from our site! I would recommend one of the perimeter spots for sure - they seem a bit shadier and quieter," notes a visitor at Ocean Waves Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Pool access: Several campgrounds offer swimming pools as alternatives to beach swimming. "So many amenities and fun things planned for Easter weekend. Staff is super friendly and welcoming. The site is very clean and quiet. Indoor pool was great for the kids on the cool and windy weekend," shares a visitor at Camp Hatteras.
Playground facilities: Some campgrounds provide dedicated play areas for children. "We loved this no-frills campground. Upon arrival, we were greates by the camp host, Glenn who was incredibly helpful throughout our stay. The bathrooms, showers and pool were pristine," notes a camper at Beechland Campground.
Water safety considerations: The sound side offers calmer waters suitable for younger children. "Site: mixture of grass and sand. Has fire pit and wooden picnic table. Gorgeous view of sunsets and water sports. Water is a leg high walk to the hammock," explains a visitor at Rodanthe Watersports & Campground.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Premium waterfront sites at rv parks near Cape Hatteras National Seashore often require advance booking. "Fantastic lot backing up to the water. Only negative is customer service is slow," reports an RVer at The Refuge on Roanoke Island.
Hookup availability: Water and electric connections are standard at most campgrounds, but sewer hookups vary. "We stayed at site 5. Important to note- there is a small cemetery on a hill in the center of campground. There is a laundry room near the office. Ice is also available to purchase," notes a visitor at Ocean Waves Campground.
Size restrictions: Several campgrounds have limitations on RV length and width. "Located between Wanchese and Manteo, this little RV park is a quiet getaway. Turning into the property you will find all of the grounds very clean and well maintained. Each site has full connections along with a picnic table," explains a camper at The Refuge on Roanoke Island.
