    Adirondack Mennonite Camping Associates Inc

Sleepaway camp, family camp, day use

Beaver Camp (or, officially Adirondack Mennonite Camping Assoc.), is a classic summer youth sleep-away camp on Beaver Lake. Sleeping in cabins with bunk beds, swimming, canoes, and a high ropes course, gathering around the campfire to end the day- Beaver Camp has it all.

Weekend and week long programming for youth and families, or site rental of cabins and platform tents is available, as well as day use access to the beach and high ropes course.

This camp is a great way to access a beautiful area in a way customized for your family!

    Wellesley Island State Park Campground

    Fine camping 1000 islands

NYS may get tons of flack for its politics and politicians. However they're doing it all correct in their state parks. This park is amazing. The views of the ST. LAWRENCE River are amazing. You're around some of the best fishing in the country. We'll. Manicured campground. It's huge by the way. Tons of playgrounds and swimming. Always clean everything. Always friendly staff and campers. Inexpensive I mean really inexpensive. You're 10 min from Alexandria Bay. Boldt castle, singer castle, you can go on river cruises and view these beautiful islands and homes on them. Watch the cargo ships cruise the channel. Electric and water on many sites. Cottages cabins and primitive sites available. Hiking trails all over the park. There's a marina, boat launch and boat rentals. Docking. You can even day trip it use public grills and still enjoy everything the park has to offer. We have so much fun here. It's hard to pack and go home.

    Southwick Beach State Park Campground

Great part with tons of beach

There is TONS of beach to explore at this little State Park in New York. I used to visit here as a kid years ago because my grandparents owned a cottage on the lake. Since they sold it, visiting Southwick is the next best thing. Lake Ontario is an amazing lake to be on and the water is pretty warm in the summer time. the waves don't get too big, so it is very safe for kids. Southwick itself has great camping spots right next to the beach. It is a little pricey if you only want to visit for the day, $8, but you can get a tent spot for $18 which is comparable to other state parks. Showers are available, and there are some short trails that are good for running or probably cross country skiing in the winter. There is also a sizable playground near the beach that is great for the kids.

    Kring Point State Park Campground

    Waterfront sites with amenities

I am tent camping and found my site (105) to have a couple of relatively level areas to choose to set up my tent on. This site is on Goose Bay, but the sites across the road are on the St Lawrence River just a few hundred feet away. Water nearby, brand new bathrooms with showers and two kitchen clean up stations are a short walk away. Every site has a fire ring with a grill and picnic table. Loons are calling, a mink scampered by on the flat rock shore 15’ away with a fish in its mouth. This place is quiet and peaceful. I will 100% return!

    Sun Outdoors Association Island

    Island Getaway

We stayed at Association Island on Lake Ontario in Henderson, NY, for a three-night excursion to celebrate my daughter’s end-of-9th-grade and start-of-summer. We’re so glad we did!

When I made the reservation, this campground was a KOA, but has since changed owners and dissociated. They’re owned by Sun Outdoors who was willing to honor the reservation, site request, and discounted pricing.(Thank you, Sun Outdoors!)

The approach by way of a single lane bridge to the island is beautiful. Once on the island, it’s obvious that this is a great place for retreat. Surrounded by Lake Ontario, it’s a secluded and idyllic setting for a RV campground.

Our site(#G07) was on the sunset-side of the island and the last of the row beside a walking trail. It was wooded, roomy, and has full hookups, a fire ring, and picnic table. I could probably have fit another RV in the site and still had space to stretch.

The sites all seem to be well maintained, the campground has paved roadways, a marina for small boats, swimming pool, and ice cream shop. We didn’t explore off the island and didn’t use the bath or shower facilities.

Each of our interactions with staff was warm and friendly. We especially appreciate this when staying anywhere.

We met a bunch of people who’ve visited the park for several consecutive years- all of whom told us there have been many upgrades and improvements since the ownership change.

Except for the 9-hour drive through three states, we can’t wait to return. We paid a KOA-discounted rate of$88 per night plus a$25 site lock fee. We stayed in our 37’ Class-A motorhome.

    Wellesley Island State Park Campground

crowded. fine if you're spending your days on the water

We came to this campground after a week in Algonquin Provincial park in Canada and the contrast couldn't have been greater. Up north we stayed on a large, shady site in a radio free loop and everyone had canoes. In New York we had a cramped, open site and everyone seemed to have a motorboat on a trailer. Our neighbors across the road set up a movie screen . The overall feel was NOT "getting away from it all".
The facilities are good and there's a nice beach and well stocked General store, also a big boat ramp facility with some docks.
We chose this location because we were attending the Antique Boat Show in Clayton, 13 miles away, and this was the closest available. It suited us just fine for that.
Keep your stuff secure, there are brazen raccoons.

Swan Bay Resort - The 1000 Islands Premier RV Park & Marina

    Great Resort Campground

I’ll start by saying Swan Bay is a busy, family-oriented campground. We arrived on a weekend and it was pretty busy but loved it during the week when everybody left and things were quieter. Our site (#38) was a Passport America site so we got a great nightly rate of $42 which is half of the regular nightly rate. Our site was a “standard site” near the pool, boat launch, activities, and Tiki Bar which surprised us because sites close to activities are usually desired and not discounted. Campsite costs depends on whether you get a waterfront (which is $95/night even in the off-season), water view, pull thru, or standard site. Most sites do not have shade but they added a new section that does have some old mature trees and sporadic shade. All the sites are the same in that they have paved parking areas with gravel in front, pavers for a patio and full hook-up. Some of the newer sites now have a bit of shade from trees. There are lots of rental park models and cottages close to the pool and Tiki Bar. Within walking distance is a Price Chopper Grocery, Dollar General, gas station, and wine and liquor store.

There is a free boat launch and boat slips (not sure if they are free) for guests. I was hoping to spend a bit of time on my paddleboard but soon realized it is very windy here and found very few windows to paddle. Our neighbor (who has camped here seasonally for the last four years) mentioned that he lost three awnings to the wind. So, don’t leave your awning out when you leave your camper and beware of winds if you want to be on the water. Check-in was quick and easy. The park is gated so you get a gate card to enter the park. You also get a BOGO card to use at the Tiki Bar which has specials during the week (like margarita Monday, bucket of beer, bloody Mary’s, etc.). The pool and Tiki Bar were not very busy when we were there. There is a second pool but it was not open yet for the season. In between the pools is a community fire pit with nice Adirondack chairs which is pretty cool. The playground is awesome and huge with lots of cool features for kids to explore. The dog park is very nice and a decent size to throw a ball for your dog. It also has potable water for drinking, which, for some reason, did not work during our stay. There are gobs of activities for kids and adults. Plenty of rentals too – ranging from boats, kayaks, golf carts, etc.

A couple of the downsides of this park are the price (unless you get a discount like we did), sites don’t have much privacy, the park gets crowded and noisy, and there was lots of noise from the construction work within the park they were doing. If you are in the back of the park, you get some road noise from Route 12 and the refrigerated truck at the neighboring Price Chopper. Overall, we loved this park during the slow season and during the week when there were not kids running around and adults playing loud music and drinking constantly.

Guide to Watertown

Cabin camping near Watertown, New York offers access to the western edge of the Adirondack Mountains and sits within 20 miles of Lake Ontario's eastern shore. Average summer temperatures range from 55-80°F, with cabin availability typically extending from May through mid-October. Winter cabin options are limited as most facilities close during colder months when temperatures can drop below 10°F.

What to do

Water activities on Lake Ontario: At Westcott Beach State Park Campground, visitors can swim at the designated beach area with lifeguards on duty. "The beach is nice but can get crowded," reports one camper. Stone steps provide access to the water rather than a sandy shoreline.

Fishing opportunities: The St. Lawrence River offers excellent fishing spots accessible from Grass Point State Park Campground. "Great place to stay with a boat," notes one visitor. The location provides convenient access to Rock Island for additional fishing options.

ATV trails: For those seeking land-based recreation, the area around Cedar Creek Cabin provides extensive ATV trail networks. A visitor mentioned, "The best part is the riding and close to several local bar/restaurants that have good food and good folks." Riders can access multiple interconnected trail systems directly from their accommodations.

What campers like

Island seclusion: Sun Outdoors Association Island offers a unique island camping experience reached by a causeway. "Access is off of I81, down a few back roads and across a causeway. Our site was a pull in and we faced a western view of Lake Ontario," describes one camper. The island setting provides minimal light pollution for stargazing.

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the generous site sizes at Wellesley Island State Park Campground. A visitor noted, "The sites there are big! We usually get 2 sites and place as many as 5 tents between the 2 sites!" This makes the park ideal for larger groups wanting to camp together.

Playground access: Multiple parks feature quality playgrounds for families. At 1000 Islands Campground, "My son loved the playground," reports one visitor. Similarly, another camper at Grass Point State Park noted, "The playground was extremely nice!"

What you should know

Weather considerations: Lake Ontario affects local weather patterns with strong winds common at waterfront sites. At Sun Outdoors Association Island, a camper warned, "Our neighbor mentioned that he lost three awnings to the wind. So, don't leave your awning out when you leave your camper."

Seasonal insects: The region experiences significant insect activity, particularly in early summer. One visitor to Swan Bay Resort reported, "One HUGE downfall was the amount of BUGS! Millions of midges and mayflies swarming the grounds from Lake Ontario."

Reservation timing: Waterfront sites fill quickly, especially during peak season. "If you don't grab a lakeside campsite early they will definitely be taken so reserve early!" advised a Westcott Beach State Park visitor. Many parks open reservations 6-9 months in advance.

Tips for camping with families

Bike-friendly options: Several campgrounds feature paved roads ideal for children on bikes. At Southwick Beach State Park Campground, "There are some short trails that are good for running or probably cross country skiing in the winter." These paths provide safe spaces for children to ride.

Beach safety: Lake Ontario offers swimming opportunities with varying conditions. "Lake Ontario is an amazing lake to be on and the water is pretty warm in the summer time. The waves don't get too big, so it is very safe for kids," notes a Southwick Beach visitor.

Nature programs: Wellesley Island State Park features a nature center with educational programs. A camper suggested, "I really recommend heading to the nature center and following the trails there. The views are gorgeous and you get some great vistas."

Tips from RVers

Utilities and hookups: Most RV sites offer electric, water, and sometimes sewer connections. At Fort Drum Recreation Area, military families can find "regular camping sites and RV sites" with standard hookups close to base.

Site selection strategy: RVers should consider site dimensions when booking. At 1000 Islands Campground, one RVer noted, "Our original site was listed at 55', but there was no way our 43' camper would fit, nor make the tight turn into it." Always verify actual site dimensions before arrival.

Service availability: Several campgrounds offer RV-specific amenities. Swan Bay Resort provides "a free boat launch and boat slips for guests" plus "a self-service car wash with bay large enough for motorhomes" adjacent to the entrance.
