The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone

Great One Night Stop - Would Have Stayed Longer!

We scheduled a pull through for 1 night last minute due to an unexpected change in plans. We are a full-time traveling family (2 kids - 8 & 13) and 2 English Bulldogs. We have a Class A motorhome and flat tow a Jeep. The campground was beautiful and easy to get in and out of. The sites were level and great size with nice spacing in between. The location was nice too! We did head over to the casino briefly and enjoyed that. We also took a drive to the University of Syracuse to tour the campus. Clean and wonderful park. Would definitely recommend.

    Cherry Grove Campground

    Very nice small campground

We stayed at Cherry Grove in May ‘23 with a Fifth wheel camper. The park is very well maintained.  Sites are good sized and packed gravel.  WiFi is very good, as is cell service from Verizon and T-Mobile. It Most of the campground is seasonal, but all of the campers were friendly.

    Green Lakes State Park Campground

Good experience - lovely swimming area and lakes!

We had a great stay at this park. We enjoyed biking and exploring the lovely blue-green lakes. The swimming area was awesome. We were on the edge of a the large RV section in Pinewoods with premium sites. However, they are all in the bright sun - no shade. It was great having the camp store so close!

    Kayuta Lake Campground and Marina

Right at the gateway to the Adirondacks, a real gem of a campground!

We've visited this campground 6 times since we found it 4 years ago, and keep coming back for more. Easy access, great staff, well kept facilities and a beautiful setting. What more can you ask for?

The sites themselves are a good size. They aren't huge, but you'll have enough room to get creative with your parking. Plenty of trees to hang your hammocks on. All sites have a picnic table and fire pit, and for the most part are fairly level. Not all sites have full hookups, some are just power, some are only grey water, and some are full. There are a lot of full timers here, so the grounds can look fuller than they really are as most often the majority of the full time sites are not occupied. But on big weekends, when everyone shows up, its still not too crowded.

The facilities are modern and well kept. The only issue I had was the shower heads are at about 5'2" above the floor. I'm 6' tall. So that kinda sucked. But the pressure and temp were great, so its still a win. Plus, camping isn't really about taking showers anyways, right? Other than that the bath houses are well maintained and stocked. And they are never more than a quick walk from your camper.

Did I mention there is a pool? There is. And its HEATED. Which is nice, as we often get up there early or late in the season, and a heated pool is a necessity. There's also a good sized playground, an arcade, and lots of games for kids (and adults) to play like basketball, shuffle board, corn hole or horse shoes.

They have a great little shop there too, with just about everything you'd need to make a great weekend. And the staff is fantastic as well. The river is a little weird to get to, but totally worth it for kayaking, sailing or whatever kind of boating you want to do.

So that's a lotta Pro's. I should list some Cons too, to keep it fair.

    • The sites are kinda close, so you don't get a ton of privacy, and you can really hear what's going on next door.
    • The roadways can get a little tight between the trees, and can make for some interesting backing in.
    • Also, the roadways are mostly one-way, which can make getting creative with your trailer landing position tough.
    • They offer free wifi.
    • Not all sites have full hookups
    • Personally I'm not a fan of such an abundance of full-time units. But at least they're well kept (for the most part) and it is a few degrees shy of looking like a trailer park. You know what I mean.

Check them out, and they'll become one of your favorites too!

    Green Lakes State Park Campground

Green Lakes is a model state park

This is a great example of what a state park should be. It not only preserves a place of unique biological diversity and geologic interest, it is also well set up and well maintained to maximize low impact outdoor recreation and environmental education. A new state of the art regional environmental education center is being built now that will open in spring, as well as new handicapped access kayaking docks that complement Accessible trails and campsites throughout the park. This is a great destination for families, handicapped campers, and natural history enthusiasts. There are several campgrounds, one is large and open and meant for large RVs, others are drive-in forested tent sites or trailer sites with hookups, and several walkin sites. There is also a colony of rustic camper cabins. The campgrounds have brand new restroom facilities and playgrounds, and the main lake has a new beach house. The lake is a fascinating meromictic lake with clear calcium-rich waters that are not only pristine and beautiful to look at, but also great for swimming and snorkeling as the waters are crystal clear and very deep. There are hiking trails, paved bike trails, a nature preserve for bird watching at Round Lake, a golf course, and great kayaking or canoeing. It is also located right next door to the Erie Canal State Park for those who want to hike or bike the historic Erie Canal. Though you might expect a park like this to be in a remote location, it is actually just a short distance east of the suburbs of the Syracuse metro area, so it is an easy park to get to, plus staying there also provides easy access to stores for supplies, or access to local cultural activities or restaurants for those who want that. One of my favorite state parks in New York!

    Birch Haven Campground

    Would not stay again!

Not really sure what to say about this campground, other than I would not stay here again (thus a one-star rating). It really is not what you would think of as a “campground” or “RV Park.” It is a decent price at $40/night + tax for a 50-amp full hook-up site but it is pretty dumpy. There are tons of seasonal campers that look like they have not moved in years. Most of those units are pretty run down park models and people don’t seem to care. In all fairness, we visited early in the season and many people had not “opened” up their campers yet. There are a few transient sites that you can rent by the night in the center portion of the park. Our site was grassy but not very level. There is a picnic table and fire pit. The electric worked fine and the sewer and water were easy to reach. They do have a rental cottage right on the water which has a great view but couldn’t see inside to tell if it was nice or not. There are restrooms and washer/dryer somewhere on site, but we did not look inside. The grounds seemed pretty well cared for with the grass being mowed and no trash lying about.  Access to the park is easy in and out off route 12 and well-marked.

The campground is fairly small and not great for a decent dog walk so I found the Zenda Preserve which is a nice hike around a farm field. There are numerous other trails managed by the Thousand Island Lakes Trust that are very nice (we also liked the MacSherry Trail in the town of Redwood).

On the bright side, the campground is close to downtown Clayton. There are really cute shops, restaurants, and museums and the downtown parks are great places to watch the sunset. The Wood Boat Brewery brews great beer and has really good food. There are numerous other places to stay for a couple of nights or week which would be preferable.

    Delta Lake State Park Campground

    Delta Lake State Park

A very nice, tidy campground located on a peninsula jutting into Delta Lake in Central NY. Our site was level and large enough for our 22ft Airstream, a 4-person tent, pop-up canopy, and 2 vehicles. A picnic table and fire ring were on the site. Our site had 30A electrical service. The surface of the site was dirt with some small stones…no grass. Trees surrounded the site on 3 sides, providing some privacy and a place to hang a hammock. We were able to carry our paddle boards to the lake, walking less than 200ft through some woods.

Guide to Pulaski

RV camping near Pulaski, New York centers around the productive salmon fishing of Lake Ontario and the Salmon River. The region experiences seasonal camping patterns with peak occupancy during the fall salmon run from September through mid-October. Most campgrounds in the Pulaski area operate seasonally from April or May through mid-October, with winterization typically occurring before the first hard freeze.

What to do

Fishing excursions: Salmon River Falls, located just 15 minutes from Brennan Beach Campground, offers a stunning natural attraction. A camper noted, "One staff member Mike told us about Salmon River Falls. We went and it is a 'must see' while there."

Golfing: Camping golfers can enjoy the 12-hole course at Streamside RV Park & Golf Course. "There is a 12 hole golf coarse that surrounds the campground. There is a bar that serves food called Divots," according to one reviewer.

Beach activities: Lake Ontario shoreline access varies by location. At Sun Outdoors Association Island, campers enjoy direct water access. "Loved the access to the water for our dogs to swim and for beautiful views. Our site backed up to the water and although it was windy they thought ahead and built the fire pit up to block it," shared a visitor.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Several parks near Pulaski feature larger camping spots. At Ontario Shores RV Park, a camper reported, "There are 7 overnight pull thru full hookup sites with concrete patio. Sites are level and spacious. Open field to walk the dog or for children."

Lake views: Sunset and sunrise views over Lake Ontario draw campers to the region. "We had a western view of Lake Ontario. We were treated to gorgeous sunsets and minimal light pollution at night. The stars were everywhere," wrote one camper about Sun Outdoors Association Island.

Friendly staff: Personal attention from campground owners and staff enhances the camping experience. A guest at Woonton Family Farms shared, "We had an excellent stay at the farm of the Woonton Family Farms with our RV, it was a cozy and beautiful campsite with personal attention of the owner."

What you should know

Weather considerations: Lake Ontario creates specific weather patterns affecting camping comfort. "It was windy they thought ahead and built the fire pit up to block it," noted a visitor to Sun Outdoors Association Island.

Seasonal population changes: Many campgrounds near Pulaski have a mix of seasonal residents and short-term visitors. At Lake Bluff RV Park, a camper observed, "Overall the campground isn't very big with lots of seasonals."

Varied camping experiences: The camping options range from resort-style to basic sites. One camper at Brennan Beach noted, "If you're not from around there, you'll stick out. We had a few awkward interactions but nothing serious. Mostly just funny."

Site selection matters: Each campground has preferred areas depending on your needs. "Going across to the island is so fun and feels so special. The views are beautiful I definitely recommend the sunrise side. The sunset is of course beautiful but sunrise sites are much bigger and can lead right to the water which is much nicer," advised a camper about Sun Outdoors Association Island.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Structured programs benefit families with children. At Lake Bluff RV Park, "Kids activities are great. Even with COVID they have stuff to keep them busy. Large wooded sites are our favorite as well," according to one family.

Swimming options: Pool facilities supplement lake swimming when conditions aren't ideal. "Bathrooms/showers were clean. Site we stayed at had full hook ups. Very nice camp store, pools, playground, and restaurants. Spent time at the beach which is also very nice," reported a family staying at Brennan Beach Campground.

Recreation amenities: Game rooms and play areas provide entertainment during inclement weather. "Near the playground they have a nice game room pool, air hockey, video games. There is a change machine too," noted a Lake Bluff RV Park visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Many RV sites throughout the region feature improved pads. At The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone, "All sites are full hookups (i think) and paved. Definitely geared towards the RV or trailer crowd."

Bathroom proximity: Consider site location relative to facilities if you prefer not using your RV systems. A reviewer of The Villages RV Park noted, "Some sites aren't that close to a bath house, so if you're not planning on duecing in your box, you might be looking at a longer walk than others based on where your site is."

Site spacing considerations: RV parks vary significantly in site spacing. At Brennan Beach, "Sites are close together, but kind of what is expected at an RV resort," while at Streamside RV Park, "The sites are tight like most RV parks."
