      Bear Spring Mountain — DEC

      Classic catskills

Went here with some friends who had never been outside NYC before. They were absolutely blown away. For me, it was a nice site but not exceptional. Bring or rent a kayak! There is some pretty serious hiking on site and nearby. There was a lot of horse activity but I don’t know if you can hire them here. Lots of wildlife! There are two areas for camping, check out both though one smells kind of like a barn. Site was typical of state park campgrounds, all up to expectations. Obey bear rules!

      Bear spring

I drove to NYC for a business trip and ended up driving 1 and a half hour to reach this place. I always carry a tent in the back of my trunk and decided to go camping. This campsite isn't the best but is still good. Thee is horses so you will smell them. There is a lake, grills restrooms and showers. This is one of the more fancy campsites and is definitely worth it for only 18 dollars. You can also do short day hikes

The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone

Very nice high-end camp resort for RV's and full timers or weekend warriors

This is a nice campground. I mean really nice. Very well thought out. All sites are full hookups (i think) and paved. Definitely geared towards the RV or trailer crowd.

Very well kept up, bathrooms are very modern and well stocked. Staff are attentive and useful, and they operate a great store with lots of options.

For activities, there are some great hikes around the campground, as well as excellent playgrounds, fishing, an awesome pool, and of course, free shuttle rides to the Turning Stone Casino right up the street.

The only real negatives would be the proximity to some railroad tracks, which can be somewhat active and very audible in some spots (you'll want to stay towards the south / front of the park if this kind of thing bothers you). That and some sites aren't that close to a bath house, so if you're not planning on duecing in your box, you might be looking at a longer walk than others based on where your site is.

      Uncle Pete's Campground - CLOSED

Woodsy with beautiful views of the Esopus Creek

A true gem, very narrow driving paths and rustic sites. Has just what you need to spend a nice weekend by the creek!

      Uncle Pete's Campground - CLOSED

      Prime Catskill Camping

I’ve been coming to Uncle Pete’s for the last 15 years. Very reasonably priced and a 2 minute drive from the center of town. Car camping so you can park right next to where you sleep, makes dining and sleeping comfortable very easy. Plenty of creekside tent sites that offer a large section of riverfront. Large baseball field and playgrounds for kids. Each site comes with an electric hookup, fire pit and picnic tables. Cheap firewood can be bought up front at the bathrooms. Becky and Danny are super accommodating!!

      Betty Brook Camp

      Pretty good place

I live near this campground. I'm about a mile away and I pass it every day. It is rather remote, but it is right along West kill road. There's a stream alongside it, a fire pit, and a town about 8 mi away. It's a small town, with just a gas station store. I would not recommend this for large trailers. The site is fairly small, but it's in state park, and there's tons of walking that can be done.

The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone

      Beautiful

Convenient to the highway with 24 hour shuttles to the casino 5 minutes away, yet quiet and beautifully maintained. Offers a pool, playground, hiking trail, fishing pond, paddleboat rentals, camp store, very clean bath houses throughout, maintained sites, fire rings at each site and organized in loops to offer wooded and full sun sites depending on what you are looking for. Visited at least once a year since 2016 with our most recent visit being June 2018. Hoping to visit again this season.

The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone

      Weird vibe but great property

The property is beautiful and quiet. Cute market at check in. Plenty to do. Neighbors keep to themselves and kind of stare le us down when we pulled in and during dog walks…maybe just an outlier experience? Staff very kind. We just stayed one night so we were an easy in and out. Super buggy.

    Guide to Milford

Betty Brook Camp offers primitive streamside camping approximately 35 miles northwest of Milford, New York. The remote location features several small camping spots alongside a stream with established fire pits. The site maintains a rustic character with no developed facilities or amenities, requiring self-sufficient camping preparations.

    What to do

Hiking and wildlife viewing: Bear Spring Mountain provides extensive hiking options with diverse wildlife viewing opportunities. "Highly recommended if you like hiking. Great flowers and nature. There is a hiking loop that goes around the pond," notes visitor J G.

Equestrian activities: Horse enthusiasts seeking equestrian camping near Milford, New York can access specialized facilities at Arcadian Pastures Equine. The working farm offers camping on equine property where visitors can participate in horse-related activities while enjoying rural farmland surroundings.

Fishing and paddling: Several campgrounds in the area offer water access for recreational activities. At Bear Spring Mountain, visitors can enjoy Launt Pond for fishing and paddling. "There is an area for day use where you can rent a paddle boat or kayak to go out on the water," according to one camper review.

    What campers like

Privacy and solitude: Betty Brook Camp receives positive feedback for its remote setting. "Love to camp here all year long have been coming to the area for a couple of decades now. Remote. Sometimes you never see anyone. You camp on the stream," explains Robert B.

Natural water sources: Campers appreciate the clean mountain water available at certain sites. One visitor at Charles E. Baker State Forest notes, "Water access at a lovely nearby pond," while another Bear Spring Mountain camper mentions, "beautiful steams - you can drink straight from the pipes!"

Year-round accessibility: Several dispersed camping locations remain available throughout different seasons, allowing for camping experiences beyond summer months. Betty Brook Camp has visitors who report camping "all year long" in the area, providing opportunities for experiencing the changing seasons.

    What you should know

Limited facilities: Most dispersed camping sites near Milford lack developed amenities. Charles E. Baker State Forest offers "Free primitive camping" where one camper reports, "Only giving 4 stars because the best free sites have water pumps and vault toilets, but this is a great camping experience."

Variable site conditions: Site quality and accessibility can fluctuate throughout the year. At The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone, conditions remain more consistent with "Spacious FHU sites. Pull thru and back ins," but dispersed sites may become difficult to access during wet periods.

Pet restrictions: Some campgrounds maintain specific pet policies. While many allow pets, Arcadian Pastures Equine prohibits pets due to its focus on equestrian activities, an important consideration for those planning horseback riding camping trips near Milford.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: For families with children, choosing campgrounds with play facilities enhances the experience. The Villages RV Park provides "lots to do for kids, facilities are new and clean," according to Keri.

Wildlife education opportunities: Country Campsites and surrounding state forests offer chances for children to learn about local ecosystems. At Bear Spring Mountain, families can explore hiking trails featuring "lots of wildlife" and "great flowers and nature."

Pond activities: Water features provide entertainment for younger campers. Bear Spring Mountain offers a small pond where "you can rent a paddle boat or kayak to go out on the water" and includes "a hiking loop that goes around the pond," creating contained exploration opportunities for families.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: RVers should consider topography when selecting sites. At Bear Spring Mountain, one camper notes that "roads were way too steep" for biking, suggesting similar challenges may exist for larger vehicles on campground roads.

Train noise consideration: When staying at established RV parks like The Villages, site selection matters for noise sensitivity. One reviewer advises: "proximity to some railroad tracks, which can be somewhat active and very audible in some spots (you'll want to stay towards the south / front of the park if this kind of thing bothers you)."

Seasonal access: Many RV facilities in the region operate seasonally. The Villages RV Park runs from "May - October," requiring alternative arrangements during winter months for those seeking year-round horseback riding camping options near Milford.
