Situated in western New York's Finger Lakes region, Livonia offers easy access to camping options across Ontario, Livingston, and Monroe counties. The area sits at approximately 1,000 feet elevation with humid continental climate patterns bringing warm summers and cold winters with significant snowfall. Most campgrounds in this region operate seasonally from May through October due to harsh winter conditions.
What to do
Hiking trail options: At Letchworth State Park Campground, campsites connect directly to trail networks. "The roads, and trails, and lookout points are all well constructed, and flow well. The scenery is remarkable, and there is a lot of informative boards, dedicated benches that provide a lot of interesting history and information," notes Seth S.
Fishing opportunities: The Flint Creek Campgrounds area provides accessible fishing. "We probably would have enjoyed this campground a bit more if the weather wasn't so terrible. The playground equipment is outdated but the kids loved the tires and zip line," shares Sparks N., highlighting the recreation options beyond fishing.
Water activities: During summer months, cool off at the natural swimming areas at Stony Brook State Park Campground. "This park is beautiful and has a unique swimming area- a 'pool' carved from the mountain! There are lots of paths and picnic areas, as well as beautiful hiking trails and creeks to cool off in," according to Kayti D.
What campers like
Off-season visitation: Letchworth State Park Campground draws visitors year-round despite its seasonal camping. "I love taking visitors here in all seasons but in autumn it is exceptional. I've stayed in a few tent sites and all are wooded and pretty private with your standard basic amenities," reports Amber A.
Private tent sites: Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill offers secluded tent camping. "Great secluded tent camping (recommend numbers 7 and 8), cabins are new and ample beds and space. Camper camping is close to everything, but less privacy," suggests Sarah C.
Clean facilities: The Canandaigua-Rochester KOA maintains high standards for bathrooms and showers. "The bathrooms are very clean and the women working the desk could not have been more helpful," explains Jenise P., who adds, "I'm a birder and my tent site here is next to a little grove of trees where I counted 12 species of birds this morning."
What you should know
Cell service limitations: Some campgrounds have limited connectivity. At Flint Creek Campgrounds, "don't expect any cell phone service. I've had friends who climbed up on top of their RV and still, no signal. It's out in the middle of nowhere, hard to find but extremely worth it," warns Lela S.
Booking requirements: Popular locations fill quickly, especially during peak seasons. "This is a JEWEL. Book early. Bring your hiking shoes & camera. The gorge is spectacular. Try to get to the balloon fest on Memorial Day - and book a flight if you can," advises Rebecca E. about Letchworth State Park.
Site variations: The Ridge Campsite offers diverse site types. "We spent two nights in June. Campground is large and spacious. Family owned. Large mature trees. Clean facilities. Lots of activities and amenities if you are interested in that," notes Carol M.
Tips for camping with families
Water recreation: Stony Brook State Park Campground has family-friendly swimming areas. "Affordable, Family friendly, loved the waterfalls. There is natural clay which my children used to make clay pots which air dried on the grass by our playground," shares Dorothy P., highlighting creative opportunities for children.
Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature play areas for different ages. At Letchworth, "Quiet relaxing atmosphere, lots of hiking trails and family friendly with parks and a pool for the kids to play," describes Lisa M.
Weekend activities: Southwoods RV Resort schedules regular events. "We stayed in August and we really enjoyed the setup and location of all the amenities this campground has. Very nice people from weekend warriors to the seasonal campers," reports Rich L.
Tips from RVers
Leveling considerations: Prepare for uneven terrain at some locations. "Only downside is that the sites aren't so level as some sites are far from level. Also make sure to bring plenty of leveling blocks as some sites are far from level," advises Jonathan G. about Ontario County Park.
Seasonal timing: Most glamping near Livonia, New York operates during specific months. "We stayed at Southwoods while visiting the Rochester, NY area and exploring attractions in the area. The campground is about 20-25 miles from downtown Rochester and located in a quiet rural setting surrounded by farmland," notes Nancy W.
Site selection: For large rigs, entry paths can be challenging. "Driveway getting in and out is a little tight for big units, definitely have to swing wide. Sites are very big and clean has plenty to do with multiple fishing ponds, swimming pool and playgrounds," shares Nick O. about The Ridge Campsite.
