Best RV Parks & Resorts near Keene, NY

Several RV campgrounds serve the Adirondack region near Keene. Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks in North Hudson accommodates big rigs with full hookups including 50-amp service, water, and sewer connections on level sites. Brookwood RV Resort, open May through mid-October, provides full-service RV sites with water, electric, and sewer hookups. Located between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, Meadowbrook Campground offers spacious RV sites without the dense spacing common at private parks. Camp Whiteface Mountain features 114 RV sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service options. "Sites are level, spotlessly clean and manicured, and had good water pressure and hookups," noted one camper about their stay in the area.

Road navigation requires planning when towing larger rigs through mountain passes. The approach to some parks involves narrow, winding roads with elevation changes that challenge larger motorhomes, particularly during winter months. Most area campgrounds operate seasonally, typically from May through mid-October, with limited year-round options. Dump stations are available at several facilities including Iroquois Campground and Lake George Schroon Valley Resort, though some require additional fees. One visitor cautioned about site conditions, noting that their site was "so out of level that we couldn't get our Airstream level unless we put 10 inches of blocking under both axles." Cell service varies throughout the mountainous region, with stronger signals near Lake Placid and Plattsburgh.

    Lake Bomoseen KOA

Fun, crowded, and running out of steam

This is a solid, family-friendly campground. It has the standard amenities plus some fun extras (arcade, mini-golf, boat rentals, etc.). However, all amenities are in worn shape. The playground is approaching dangerous, for instance (metal pipe sticking out of sandbox?) and the arcade was largely broken (ate a lot of quarters). Granted we were there for the last weekend of the camping season, but these appear to be longer term issues.

The camp store was great. Service was helpful and friendly.

Odd $10 CASH deposit for gate key that no one asked for. No ATM on site to get cash…

The sites are spacious enough, but are very close to each other. Zero buffer between neighboring sites means encroaching slide outs.

Cell services on ATT and TMobile were nonexistent. Campground WiFi is a joke (less than 1mbps).

Beautiful views of lake down by the dock, but campsites have no view.

Easy access to several great hikes and local restaurants.

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Amazing

This is a Class A 5⭐️KOA Campsite! We arrived late and Jox & his sweet wife helped us manuever our RV into our pull through site B05. We were super close to the office, store, snacks, laundry & activities. Our site was a “ dirt” site that had a picnic table and fire pit with full hook ups. This campsite has concierge service that will help you out with any of your wants/needs. Great site in nature’s finest.

    Lake Bomoseen KOA

    Many Features But Road Noise

The Campground has a nice staff, a very well appointed general store, laundry, arcade, marina with boat rentals, mini theater, and indoor mini put. Most of the sites are wooded and nice. Somehow we managed to get the one pull through spot that was at the end and harder to get in. I was surprised how much road noise we heard inside of our trailer. The internet speed fluxuates and was slow to unusable our last day. I could not get the cable TV working. All in all it is a nice Campground and most of it (the back in spaces) look nice and wooded. I would stay here again despite the small inconveniences but I would definately pick a different camp site. Again, you will hear some road noise.

    Shelburne Camping Area

    Very nice owners...lovely campground!

We have a “big rig” 40’ 5th wheel with 4 slide outs. Called them same day from Capital Region Welcome Ctr in NY, about 3 hrs away (below Albany). They had a full hook up, pull-thru corner space for us. Offered parking for our truck right across lane on separate site. Super nice owners! Went over COVID questions and after hour check-in instructions. We came in just after it got dark. Loved town of Shelburne. Awesome little shops and great, well stocked little local grocery store. Authentic Italian restaurant in grocery store parking lot...picked up delicious strombolis. Due to COVID, mostly call ahead/pick-up or drive thru for many things...incl. delicious coffee in town at Village Wine & Coffee and AWESOME cider donuts at Shelburne Orchards! Only a 20 min drive into downtown Burlington. Took narrated tour on Ethan Allen ferry on Lake Champlain. Shopped in artsy town. Extended our stay for TWO extra nights. Will def come back. Didn’t need to use, but noted that bathrooms were immaculately clean.

    Wilmington Notch Campground

In the heart of the High Peaks

Wilmington Notch Campground is owned and operated by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. There are approximately 50 sites available, all on level campground and within access of Both bathrooms and shower facilities. Fire pits and picnic tables available. About a mile down the road from the high falls gorge tourist destination and a quarter mile from the base of whiteface lodge ski resort. There is an accessible trail from the back of the campground to an amazing waterfall on the west branch of the Ausable River and plenty of spots to trout fish/swim. A mile down the road is flume falls trails, which leads to a great swimming hole and various height choice cliff jumping. This is a very clean and quiet campground, one of the best in the high peaks region for primitive camping

    Moosalamoo Campground

    Hidden Gem

Tucked down a gravel road in the Green Mountain National Forest is this hidden treasure. Large sites, friendly campground host, the moosalamoo trailhead right next to campground. The trail connects to many others. You will pass several trailheads on your way up to the campground. Many of the sites are reservable, others are first come first serve. You will find a pay station as you enter the campsite. The camp host is at site 1. Surprisingly clean vault toilets. No showers. There are dumpsters on the way out for trash and recycling. I saw bear storage lockers but I did not use them as I had my bear keg with me. Behind the parking spur at the site there is gravel with picnic table and fire pit. Beyond that in the trees was a spot for the tent. I didn’t experience many bugs, no mosquitoes, what I saw the most of were caterpillars. But If you needed bug spray or forgot anything back in town a few miles Ripton grocery has you covered.

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Excellent Customer Service/Great Location/Loved It!

We just spent a full week at the North Pole Resorts the last week of May and through the Memorial Day Weekend. We are full-time travelers with a 40' Class A motorhome, flat tow a Jeep, have 2 kids (ages 8 & 13), and 2 English Bulldogs. We loved pulling in the week before the holiday weekend because there was hardly anyone else at the campground or in the area just yet. It does get packed over the holiday weekend, but was still very enjoyable and quiet at night. We were there right at the start of the season for them. ***Fair warning - Be sure to turn in by the North Pole Lodge Store and Mini Golf to register. We missed it and went past.*** We stayed in premium site 11 in the resort section and loved it. There was plenty of grassy room for the dogs to go out and we had a little cover over our picnic table. The kids enjoyed the arcade and playground being right there. We loved the store as it is one of the best we've seen yet & very well stocked. The location to area attractions was ideal as well. Lake Placid is maybe 20 minutes down the road and you can get groceries and have good restaurant choices too. Highly suggest the 45 minute drive to Ausable Chasm as well as the very short drive to the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge. Another favorite activity was pulling off the road to explore the hiking & fishing. Quarry Pool Pond was our fave! Would absolutely be back!

    AuSable Chasm Campground

    Closest campground to Ausable Chasm

We travel in a 17-foot camper van, but no one ever believes that we are no bigger than a standard cargo van and can easily fit in a regular size parking space. Upon arrival at Ausable Chasm, we were told we had to take a site with water and electric since we had a camper van. These sites were $13 more per night and we really did not need the hookups. We were finally able to convince the staff that we could take a standard tent site, which was more than big enough.

The road through the campground is dirt and rutted but the speed limit is 5 mph, so it wasn’t that bad, but it would be a mess if it was raining.

Bathrooms and shower rooms are individual rooms, but the doors are not labeled so it’s a game of “what’s behind door number 1?”  There was no light in the shower room that I looked at so a night shower would be out of the question. The bathrooms were clean and had soap, paper towels, a garbage receptacle, and a mirror in each.

Lots of ant hills throughout the campground so be cautious where you set up a tent. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Large and nice-looking playground, pool, volleyball net, disc golf and mountain biking/hiking trails. It also looked like there were cross country ski trails but not sure if the campground or cabins would be open in the winter.

Biggest advantage is that Ausable Chasm(a separate business) is directly across the street from the campground and it is very close to the ferry that will take you to Burlington, VT, our next destination.

Guide to Keene

Adirondack RV camping near Keene, New York requires navigating through mountain terrain with elevation changes between 1,000 and 4,000 feet. The camping season typically runs from mid-May through mid-October, with most facilities closing during winter months when roads become impassable due to snow and ice. Temperatures can fluctuate dramatically, with summer nights dropping into the 40s even after warm days.

What to do

Paddling the Schroon River: Access the river directly from Lake George Schroon Valley Resort, where campers can enjoy tubing and kayaking. "Absolutely one of the best campgrounds in NY, especially if you value nature, quiet, and simplicity. From tubing down the Schroon River to visiting local eateries in Bolton Landing, there is simply nothing better than a stay here," reports one visitor.

Hiking nearby trails: Set up base camp at Thornbush Acres RV Park for day trips to surrounding trails. A camper notes, "Close to Lakes to Paddle, Store and Gas not far. Camp is quite more for Adults, no playgrounds or things for kids to do. Great for Day trips around the area."

Winter activities: While most campgrounds close seasonally, the area offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing from November through April. Whiteface Mountain provides downhill skiing with 3,430 feet of vertical drop, the greatest in eastern North America.

What campers like

Riverside sites: Many campers appreciate waterfront access. At Davey Falls ADK, one visitor enjoyed the "Amazing secluded creekside spot. Private waterfall, hiking trails. Perfect location to explore eastern Adk."

Pool amenities: When summer temperatures climb, on-site pools provide relief. A Iroquois Campground & RV Park camper shared: "Nice campground near Plattsburgh. Staff very friendly, under new ownership, lots of seasonal sites and folks, fun activities, campers friendly and welcoming, roadway a little rough but overall ok, nice large pond, reasonable price."

Proximity to attractions: Many campgrounds serve as convenient bases for regional exploration. "Only fifteen minutes to Bolton Landing shops and restaurants," noted one Lake George Schroon Valley Resort visitor, while acknowledging "the noise from the Northway within earshot."

What you should know

Campsite leveling challenges: Many sites in the Adirondack region require leveling equipment. Bring adequate blocking materials and leveling tools.

Seasonal operation: Most facilities operate only during warmer months. Brookwood RV Resort's season runs "May 15-October 15" while Thornbush Acres operates "Mid-May thru Mid-Oct."

Cell service variability: Connectivity depends on location and carrier. At Brookwood RV Resort, one camper noted, "We got crappy cell service, and the camp wifi was spotty- but hey, we were camping, right?"

Amenity limitations: Some parks advertise amenities that may not be fully operational. Check current conditions before booking, as one camper observed at Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks: "The mini golf course was in disrepair, the arcade was empty of machines, and the activities touted on their website were nonexistent."

Tips for camping with families

Consider campground amenities: Not all parks cater to children. "This ground was very quiet. Mostly seasonal sites with only one overnight site that I saw. No tents allowed," observed a visitor at Shady Oaks Camping Resort. Another camper added: "There is also a small pool, play ground and a picnic table and hook ups from the sites."

Pack for variable weather: Temperature swings of 30-40 degrees between day and night are common. Bring layered clothing and rain gear even during summer months.

Plan for limited entertainment options: Some parks have few organized activities. A Thornbush Acres visitor noted the park is "quite more for Adults, no playgrounds or things for kids to do," making it better suited for families planning day trips.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: Request specific sites based on your rig's dimensions. At Camp Whiteface Mountain, one camper praised its location: "Nestled in the trees by the Ausable River its a convenient place to explore the area. 20 minutes from downtown Lake Placid at the base of Whiteface mountain."

Route planning essential: Map routes carefully, avoiding steep mountain passes when possible. The approach to some parks involves elevation changes that challenge larger motorhomes.

Off-peak advantages: Consider camping mid-week when occupancy is lower. One Brookwood RV Resort visitor noted: "I was there mid-week and most of the short-term sites were empty."
