Best RV Parks & Resorts near Elizabethtown, NY

Several RV parks surround Elizabethtown, offering varying levels of accommodation for motorhomes and travel trailers. Brookwood RV Resort in Ticonderoga provides full hookup RV sites with 50-amp service, water, and sewer connections. The resort operates seasonally from May 15 to October 15. Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks in North Hudson accommodates big rigs with level gravel sites and offers both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service. Shady Oaks Camping Resort in Plattsburgh features 100 sites with water hookups and 30-amp electric service, operating from May through September. "Our site was a level, shaded site with full hookup including sewer, water, and 50 AMP connections," noted one visitor about their stay at Brookwood.

Full-service dump stations are available at most parks in the region, though travelers should verify availability when booking. Cell service varies considerably throughout the Adirondack Mountains, with stronger signals typically found near larger towns. Most RV parks in the area welcome pets, though specific restrictions may apply. Many campgrounds close for winter, with the typical operating season running from May through mid-October. Advance reservations are strongly recommended during peak foliage season in September and October when availability becomes limited. Navigation to some parks requires careful planning as mountain roads can present challenges for larger motorhomes, particularly along routes with tight turns and steep grades near Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain areas.

    Abel Mountain Campground

    Great Mid Week Adventure

My husband and I are seniors and spent 3 nights, Tuesday to Friday in June on site 51. Abel Mtn. Campground was easy enough to find. We have a 21' travel trailer and took advantage of the full hookups that most of the sites provide, including our first time using cable TV. As everyone else who reviews this place said, the owners are the first pleasure you find there. There's a heated pool, strong WiFi at your site, tons of clean river sites, immaculate rest rooms with an accessible ramp and lots of showers. For activities, you can hike on trails across the foot bridge and fish in many places along the river. They recycle everything possible and even provide composting of plant based waste. We have rarely found a returnable bottles and cans container so finding that and even composting is a notch well above the competition. Being the middle of June, there were no kids around but the photos and the two playgrounds tell us kids must love the place. Sites are back-in and very level on gravel pads. We highly recommend the place. Oh and a word to the wise, you will hear a train go by somewhere and the whistle will wake you up but no worries, it's all part of the ambiance.

    Lake Bomoseen KOA

Fun, crowded, and running out of steam

This is a solid, family-friendly campground. It has the standard amenities plus some fun extras (arcade, mini-golf, boat rentals, etc.). However, all amenities are in worn shape. The playground is approaching dangerous, for instance (metal pipe sticking out of sandbox?) and the arcade was largely broken (ate a lot of quarters). Granted we were there for the last weekend of the camping season, but these appear to be longer term issues.

The camp store was great. Service was helpful and friendly.

Odd $10 CASH deposit for gate key that no one asked for. No ATM on site to get cash…

The sites are spacious enough, but are very close to each other. Zero buffer between neighboring sites means encroaching slide outs.

Cell services on ATT and TMobile were nonexistent. Campground WiFi is a joke (less than 1mbps).

Beautiful views of lake down by the dock, but campsites have no view.

Easy access to several great hikes and local restaurants.

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Amazing

This is a Class A 5⭐️KOA Campsite! We arrived late and Jox & his sweet wife helped us manuever our RV into our pull through site B05. We were super close to the office, store, snacks, laundry & activities. Our site was a “ dirt” site that had a picnic table and fire pit with full hook ups. This campsite has concierge service that will help you out with any of your wants/needs. Great site in nature’s finest.

    Lake Bomoseen KOA

    Many Features But Road Noise

The Campground has a nice staff, a very well appointed general store, laundry, arcade, marina with boat rentals, mini theater, and indoor mini put. Most of the sites are wooded and nice. Somehow we managed to get the one pull through spot that was at the end and harder to get in. I was surprised how much road noise we heard inside of our trailer. The internet speed fluxuates and was slow to unusable our last day. I could not get the cable TV working. All in all it is a nice Campground and most of it (the back in spaces) look nice and wooded. I would stay here again despite the small inconveniences but I would definately pick a different camp site. Again, you will hear some road noise.

    Abel Mountain Campground

    Quiet and relaxing

I spent a couple of days at Abel Mountain with my dog, and we both had a nice stay. The campground is quiet and relaxing with plenty of space and a beautiful river that kept my dog entertained for hours. I was at site 72, an easy pull-through with plenty of shade.

Wifi was decent, cable hook-up did not provide a clear picture, and Verizon cell service was minimal.

Close to Randolph for groceries and take-out. The Barn gas station complex off of Exit 4 was perfect for fueling-up before getting back on the road.

Excellent military discount - 25%, so the stay was similar in cost to staying on at a military base's Famcamp.

If I'm ever back in Vermont, I'll probably stay here again.

    Shelburne Camping Area

    Very nice owners...lovely campground!

We have a “big rig” 40’ 5th wheel with 4 slide outs. Called them same day from Capital Region Welcome Ctr in NY, about 3 hrs away (below Albany). They had a full hook up, pull-thru corner space for us. Offered parking for our truck right across lane on separate site. Super nice owners! Went over COVID questions and after hour check-in instructions. We came in just after it got dark. Loved town of Shelburne. Awesome little shops and great, well stocked little local grocery store. Authentic Italian restaurant in grocery store parking lot...picked up delicious strombolis. Due to COVID, mostly call ahead/pick-up or drive thru for many things...incl. delicious coffee in town at Village Wine & Coffee and AWESOME cider donuts at Shelburne Orchards! Only a 20 min drive into downtown Burlington. Took narrated tour on Ethan Allen ferry on Lake Champlain. Shopped in artsy town. Extended our stay for TWO extra nights. Will def come back. Didn’t need to use, but noted that bathrooms were immaculately clean.

    Wilmington Notch Campground

In the heart of the High Peaks

Wilmington Notch Campground is owned and operated by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. There are approximately 50 sites available, all on level campground and within access of Both bathrooms and shower facilities. Fire pits and picnic tables available. About a mile down the road from the high falls gorge tourist destination and a quarter mile from the base of whiteface lodge ski resort. There is an accessible trail from the back of the campground to an amazing waterfall on the west branch of the Ausable River and plenty of spots to trout fish/swim. A mile down the road is flume falls trails, which leads to a great swimming hole and various height choice cliff jumping. This is a very clean and quiet campground, one of the best in the high peaks region for primitive camping

Guide to Elizabethtown

Elizabethtown serves as a gateway to Adirondack camping opportunities, positioned at 614 feet elevation with temperatures ranging from winter lows near 0°F to summer highs around 80°F. The surrounding Essex County terrain features a mix of dense forests and water access points, with most campgrounds operating seasonally from May through mid-October. Winter camping options are extremely limited in this region.

What to do

Gem mining and recreation activities: At Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks in North Hudson, campers can enjoy on-site gem mining activities. "Being a fan of gems, I definitely bought an embarrassing amount of dirt for the gem mining. Got some good finds, so worth it!" notes one visitor. The campground also offers train rides and hiking trails.

Water activities on the Schroon River: Lake George Schroon Valley Resort offers river access for tubing during summer months. A camper reports, "From tubing down the Schroon River to visiting local eateries in Bolton Landing, there is simply nothing better than a stay here." The river provides a natural cooling option during hot summer days.

Fort Ticonderoga history tours: Historical sites near Ticonderoga provide educational day trips from your campsite. "Ft. Ticonderoga is a few miles to the north where you can explore history with re-enactors," mentions one visitor to the area. The fort operates daily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm during the main season.

What campers like

Private waterfall access: Davey Falls ADK Creekside offers an intimate camping experience with natural water features. A reviewer described it as an "Amazing secluded creekside spot. Private waterfall, hiking trails." This campground has only two sites, making advanced reservations essential.

Spacious sites with full hookups: Campers appreciate the well-maintained sites at nearby campgrounds. "Our site was a level, shaded site with full hookup including sewer, water, and 50 AMP connections," noted one visitor about their stay at a local RV park. Level sites are particularly valued given the mountainous terrain.

Heated pools for extended season: Several campgrounds offer heated pools to extend swimming opportunities into cooler months. "I will say the heated pool was a big plus!" commented a camper at Lake George Schroon Valley Resort. Pools typically operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend.

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly throughout the region. One camper at a nearby campground notes, "We got crappy cell service, and the camp wifi was spotty- but hey, we were camping, right?" Strongest signals are found closer to Plattsburgh and Lake Placid.

Highway noise at some locations: Some campgrounds experience noise from nearby highways. A camper at Lake George Schroon Valley Resort mentioned, "The downside is the noise from the Northway within earshot and from the noisy seasonal campers who insist on blasting their music to the whole campground."

Drought conditions affect water usage: Water conservation may be required during dry periods. A visitor noted, "With COVID-19 restrictions this year, the bathrooms are closed to those who have facilities in their RV. There's also a drought and they're on a well, so water conservation is essential."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Iroquois Campground & RV Park offers family-friendly amenities. "They have a beautiful pond and its peaceful environment great for families and camp owners are helpful and polite," shares a first-time camper. Multiple campgrounds feature playgrounds and recreational areas.

Outdoor games: Several rv campgrounds near Elizabethtown, New York provide gaming options. "Beautiful site... Cornhole, Chess, Connect 4, Playground," lists one camper about their experience at a nearby facility. These activities help entertain children during downtime.

Kid-friendly mining activities: Structured activities keep children engaged at some locations. A visitor to Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks shared, "The kids loved the gem mining and train rides!! We enjoyed the water view and the staff was so nice to us!"

Tips from RVers

Site selection for large rigs: Shady Oaks Camping Resort in Plattsburgh accommodates larger vehicles. "Great Place for Big Rigs... Small but clean areas with electric at each site," notes one RVer. The campground features 100 sites with water hookups and 30-amp electric service.

Seasonal considerations: Most Elizabethtown area RV parks close during winter months. Thornbush Acres RV Park operates "Mid-May thru Mid-Oct" according to their listing. Year-round RV storage is limited in the region.

Water conservation during dry periods: RVers should prepare for potential water restrictions. "There's also a drought and they're on a well, so water conservation is essential. Coin-operated shower," noted one visitor, highlighting the importance of coming prepared with full water tanks during dry periods.
