Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Caballo Lake in New Mexico and what's the shoreline access like for campers?

Caballo Lake stretches approximately 18 miles along the Rio Grande and covers about 11,500 acres when at normal levels. For campers, shoreline access varies depending on water levels and your camping location within the park. The Upper Flats area provides good proximity to the water. The shoreline is generally accessible for fishing, swimming, and boating activities, though specific access points may require short walks from campsites. Contact the park office for current water levels and best access points, as these can change seasonally with rainfall and drought conditions.

What are the best spots to photograph at Caballo Lake State Park?

Caballo Lake State Park offers several picturesque photography locations. The most popular spots include sunrise and sunset views across the lake, particularly from the eastern shoreline facing west toward the mountains. The Upper Flats area provides excellent vantage points where the water meets the desert landscape. For wildlife photography, early mornings near the shoreline can yield opportunities to capture birds and occasional desert wildlife. The contrast between the blue water, desert vegetation, and surrounding mountains creates dramatic landscape shots, especially during golden hour. Seasonal variations in water levels can create interesting foreground elements for landscape compositions.

What camping facilities are available at Caballo Lake State Park?

Caballo Lake State Park offers pull-through sites with hookups for RVs and trailers. The campground features friendly camp hosts and affordably priced sites with utilities. While the sites are positioned fairly close together, they accommodate various camping setups, including small to medium-sized trailers (18-foot trailers fit comfortably). The park tends to fill up during peak seasons, so reservations are recommended. For specific amenity details like restrooms, showers, or dump stations, contact the park directly before your visit.

Are there beach camping opportunities at Caballo Lake State Park?

Yes, beach camping opportunities are available at Caballo Lake State Park, particularly in the Upper Flats Beach Camping area. This section allows campers to stay close to the shoreline, providing convenient access to the water for swimming, fishing, and other water activities. The beach areas vary in size depending on the lake's water level. The sandy/dirt shoreline is suitable for day use and overnight camping, though sites near the water tend to fill quickly during busy periods. For the best beach camping experience, arrive early during peak seasons to secure prime waterfront locations.
