The gravel road leading to Sunset Reef Campground sits just off Highway 62/180, tucked behind low hills that shield campers from highway noise. This BLM campground operates on a five-night maximum stay and maintains eleven designated sites—five pull-through spots for RVs and six tent sites—though reviewers note additional campers often park along the fence line when official sites fill up.
Each site includes a covered picnic table, fire ring, charcoal grill, and trash service, with a vault toilet serving the entire campground. "This site/sites are along a dirt road just off 62/180 a few miles north of the turn off to Carlsbad Caverns," explains Aliza N., who notes the first three sites remain accessible to most vehicles while the remaining sites require higher clearance due to rougher road conditions. The campground fills by evening during busy periods, with turnover typically occurring in late morning as visitors complete their cave tours.
Sunset Reef serves as a strategic base for exploring both Carlsbad Caverns National Park, located 10 minutes from the entrance, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park, approximately 45 minutes south. Cell service proves reliable with multiple carriers reporting good signal strength. The Slaughter Canyon trailhead lies 20 minutes down the same access road, while the city of Carlsbad sits 30 minutes away for resupply needs.
Road conditions vary seasonally, with the half-mile access route described as washboarded but manageable for most vehicles during dry conditions. Security cameras monitor the area, contributing to the quiet atmosphere most evenings. "Right off the highway and tucked down a gravel road and very quiet at night," notes Abby M.. Wind can pick up significantly after dark, and sites offer limited privacy due to their open layout and close spacing.
For those wanting more remote options, camping spots outside BLM Land — Carlsbad Field Office provide alternatives with different terrain and access requirements.
