Best Cabin Camping near Questa, NM

Rustic cabin rentals at Questa Lodge & RV Resort, 4K River Ranch, and Red River RV provide accommodation options throughout the Questa area of northern New Mexico. These cabin accommodations feature varying amenities, with most offering electricity, basic furniture, and access to shared restroom facilities. Sites such as Questa Lodge provide river-adjacent cabin options with picturesque settings. "Questa Lodge is a nice park nestled at the foot of the mountains and on the banks of the Red River. Nicely landscaped with two ponds and a river walk," noted one visitor. Cabin interiors typically include beds, tables, and sometimes small kitchenettes, with heating available for cooler mountain nights.

Log cabins and KOA-style accommodations vary in size and amenities depending on the property. Red River RV offers both standard and riverside cabins that sleep 2-4 people, with some featuring more deluxe furnishings. Pet policies differ between locations, with Questa Lodge, Road Runner RV Resort, and Angel Nest RV Retreat all allowing pets in their cabin accommodations. A camper at 4K River Ranch described it as having "convenient and beautiful" cabins with "gorgeous Mountain Views." Most cabin rentals require advance reservations, especially during summer months when the area sees peak visitation from May through September.

Cabin guests should plan to bring bedding, pillows, towels, and toiletries as these items are typically not provided. Basic cookware may be available in some units, particularly those with kitchenettes, but many cabin renters bring their own cooking supplies. Several campgrounds like Road Runner RV Resort offer on-site stores with limited provisions. "They have a nice little gift shop," reported one visitor, though selection is minimal. The town of Questa has a grocery store for more substantial shopping needs, while the nearby towns of Red River and Eagle Nest offer additional supply options. Cabins at Golden Eagle RV Park benefit from an on-site restaurant, with one guest noting they "have a great restaurant attached that we utilized for breakfast."

    Monument Lake Resort

Beautiful start in south central Colorado

A large campground at the foot of the southern San Isabel mountain range. When you first drive in there are secluded tent spots, then small cabins. There are many spots all around the lake, with large tenter sites on the opposite bank of the lake. We set up amongst the trees in a relatively open spot but there weren’t many campers there so it was no problem. Had a view of the lake and a vault toilet nearby (it was pretty disgusting). Clean showers/toilets on other side of lake. No picnic table on site, but it did have a box grill and a fire pit — burn ban was in effect though. A little stream nearby. Camp store, restaurant, boat rental on site. In all we were thankful for a spot in the summer with no reservations.

    Agua Piedra Campground

    Great Northern New Mexico Camp

We stayed at this site on the way back to Texas from our Colorado trip this summer. This is a great National Forest Campground south of Taos in the Carson Forest. The campground is just off the highway and situated in a beautiful mountain pine forest and next to a great trout stream. You have great shade during the hotter summer months. It’s far enough away from the highway that you don’t hear the traffic. It has a huge meadow and group camp site which look fantastic. The individual sites have some privacy between the sites and come equipped with fire pits and picnic tables. We made a reservation but the camp had a number of open sites in the peak summer season. The highlight here is the proximity of great hiking to nearby lakes and fishing in the trout stream. They had great facilities including clean pit toilets and some historic log cabins. They have a camp host and the sites accommodate tents and smaller vans and campers. I would give this another visit on our next trip to NM.

    Ponderosa Campground

    The River runs through it

The website listed for this campground is correct Ponderosa campground Antonito, CO.

    Phone 719.376.5857

This is a very relaxing place to stay and it seems like most of the people there have been there many times before. The drive in is easy on Route 17 and does not require a vehicle with high ground clearance. They do allow campfires, they have clean bathrooms and a shower house. I stayed in a backpacking tent after driving all day arriving on a Friday at about 4:00 PM. The campground is set-up for small campers and has some cabins for rent too. The bathrooms with showers are clean and comfortable. The sites have fire rings with grates and picnic tables. The owner manager is great, providing quality fishing advice, conversation and even a free cup of coffee in the morning. Hiking on the CDT is near the campground and fishing is right in the campground. The steam train is right up the pass and I happened to be there the night before opening day catching a photo when I drove over the pass to Chama New Mexico. The Cumbres and Toltec Train traveling between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico. This is a very nice drive and Chama is a cool place to visit, it is a trail town on the CDT.

I will visit this campground again for sure.

    Ponderosa Campground

    Secluded Campsite.

This campsite is only accessible via boat. There are two fire pits. The land is flat compared to other sites at the Reservoir. Most of the ground is covered with sand. The mosquitoes were not too terrible even though we were right by the water. There are no bathroom facilities just nature. It is a nice quiet cove with amazing views. The stars and the moon light up the sky. I highly recommend staying there if you have boat access. It is secluded and private.

    4K River Ranch

Best campground in Red River, NM

4k River Ranch is the best campground in Red River. They've got RV sites, apartments, cabins and a beautiful penthouse in the center of town overlooking the town and mountain. The Red River runs through the park, so you can fish in it or in the stocked private pond. The have 50amp & 30amp sites. Pull-thrus, back-ins & buddy sites. WiFi is good for checking emails and browsing websites. Very nice bathrooms with showers plus a laundry room. The staff is fantastic and they've got a really nice new office/store. They're building new cabins along the Red River plus a new pavilion for family gatherings along with a playground for the kids.

Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa

Excellent hot springs, convenient RV Park

We absolutely loved our stay at Ojo Caliente. The entire staff is helpful and kind, especially Danny on the grounds and Annie at the restaurant. We wanted spot 17 but it was booked so we got spot 11, which had some privacy as well. As others have mentioned, the hookups are on the opposite side but they will lend you extensions if you need. All spots have picnic tables. The spots further from sitting have most privacy and are still only a 5 minute walk to entrance (I timed it from our site). The best part is that you get early access to the pools, you'll have them nearly to yourselves 7:30-10am and 20% off admission. Also there is free yoga at 9 or 10:40 for guests and all the instructors were fantastic. The onsite restaurant was good, although we wished they had more than 5 bar seats. Would definitely stay again, so many amenities for the same price as a state park!

    Questa Lodge & RV Resort

RV park with a campground feel

Nice park nestled at the foot of the mountains and on the banks of the Red River. Nicely landscaped with two ponds and a river walk. Location is great for visiting Rio Grande del Norte NM and the Wild Rivers Recreation Area. Just north of Taos too. Nicely shaded, level sites with full hookups. Nice picnic table and grill. Might be a little tight for big rigs, but my little Casita was quite happy. Very friendly folks in the office. Clean laundry and restroom. My site backed up to the river and the sound of the rushing water was the perfect lullaby.

    Ponderosa Campground

    Secluded and beautiful

I actually deleted my other review because I thought I had the wrong campsite but I checked and it’s all good. The only amenity we had was a vault toilet with a nearby water pump, a fire pit, picnic table and bear boxes. The vault toilets were probably the nicest I’ve been too. They were clean and didn’t smell at all.

The view was beautiful and it’s a short hike down to wade in the cool water. I really enjoyed the quiet here. There were only a few other campers and it mostly felt like we had the place to ourselves.

Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa

    Hot springs

Stayed for 3 nights. Awesome experience. Campground is rustic. Water and electric only. They do have a dump station but it is an extra cost. Sites were small and some hookups are in strange places. Our site #2 was shaded but hookups were at front of site and on wrong side so make sure you have enough power cord and hose. Campground does have a small bathroom and vintage rental trailers. You still have to pay for entry to springs but you get a discount for being in campground. The hot springs are amazing and you can leave and come back. Open till 10 pm which was great and we showered in the great locker rooms at the springs area before going back to camp. There is a great restaurant on site as well as beer and wine.

Guide to Questa

Cabin rental options abound in the Questa region of northern New Mexico, located at elevations between 7,000-8,750 feet. The area experiences cool mountain nights year-round, with summer daytime temperatures typically in the 70s and nights in the 50s. Several campgrounds offer rustic cabin accommodations within 30 minutes of Questa, providing alternatives to traditional tent or RV camping during the region's variable mountain weather conditions.

What to do

Fishing access: Cabins at 4K River Ranch provide direct access to the Red River for trout fishing. "The river runs right through the park. There is a trout pond, playground, pavilion with live music on most Fridays during the summer," notes one camper. Some properties even allow guests to fish in stocked private ponds with catch limits.

Hiking trails: Multiple cabin rental locations near Questa connect to hiking paths in Carson National Forest. At Agua Piedra Campground, "There is a trail head with 2 trails, one atv accessible and one hiking/horse that goes up to Indian Lake. Beautiful views and about 1200' elevation change." These paths offer day hikes directly from your cabin accommodation.

Hot springs soaking: Cabin rentals at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa provide access to mineral pools. "You pay for daily camping plus a day fee for access to the soaking pools. Definitely worth it! The soaking area is about a 5 minute walk from the campground," explains one visitor. Cabin guests receive a 20% discount on hot springs admission.

What campers like

Mountain views: Cabin properties in the Questa region feature views of the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains. At Angel Nest RV Retreat, "Views were shockingly good. Because of the weather I felt like I was in the Scottish highlands or something, not New Mexico," according to one camper. Most cabins position toward mountain vistas rather than parking areas.

Water features: Many cabin properties incorporate water features into their landscaping. "We stayed in spot R1 which is pretty small/crowded in, but near river and trees. Lovely duck and geese ponds and river walk, also dog park," reports one visitor about Questa Lodge & RV Resort. The sound of flowing water adds to the cabin experience.

Seasonal activities: Cabin accommodations near Questa operate year-round with winter activities available. "Red River is an adorable town to boot," notes one camper at Red River RV. Winter cabin rentals provide access to nearby skiing at Red River Ski Area and Sipapu Ski Resort, while summer brings hiking and fishing opportunities.

What you should know

Bathroom access: Cabin arrangements vary significantly regarding bathroom facilities. "The showers and laundry were clean and beautiful," notes one camper at Red River RV. However, not all properties offer private bathrooms in cabins, with some requiring walks to centralized shower facilities.

Limited supplies: Cabins typically require guests to bring essential supplies. "Stayed in spot #59 which puts you along the river that is running through the property. The sound is so peaceful. The camp ground also has its own stocked pond. Guest are aloud to fish for two fish per day for each guest in your party," notes one camper at 4K River Ranch. Most cabins have electrical outlets but limited kitchen facilities.

Seasonal availability: Cabin reservations require advance planning, especially during peak periods. "We enjoyed our stay. It was very clean and gorgeous Mountain Views. The showers were clean and they did have laundry facilities," notes a camper at 4K River Ranch. Summer weekends and winter holidays book months in advance at most properties.

Tips for camping with families

Recreation options: Family-friendly cabin rentals offer designated children's areas. "There is a trout pond, playground, pavilion with live music on most Fridays during the summer and they also have condos and cabins," describes a visitor to 4K River Ranch. Properties with playgrounds provide alternatives when weather limits outdoor activities.

Cabin size considerations: Family cabin options vary in sleeping capacity and layout. At Golden Eagle RV Park, cabins accommodate different group sizes: "They have a great restaurant attached that we utilized for breakfast." Families should confirm exact sleeping arrangements when booking.

Proximity to services: Cabin rentals differ in their distance from essential services. "Red River is very cool," notes a camper, with most cabin rentals positioned within 15 minutes of basic supplies. Families should stock up on groceries in larger towns before arrival at more remote cabin locations.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: RVers who also use cabins recommend checking site specifics. "This is your quintessential mom n pop RV stop in all the right ways. Owners are super helpful in guiding us to our site (which is necessary as there are some spots that are a tight squeeze)," notes a visitor to Golden Eagle RV Park. Cabin locations may have terrain challenges similar to RV sites.

Wi-Fi connectivity: Digital connectivity varies significantly at cabin properties near Questa. "We had great Wi-Fi as well. Couldn't have asked for more," states a camper at Road Runner RV Resort. Most properties offer some level of Wi-Fi, but signal strength varies based on cabin location within the property.
