Six Mile Canyon offers dispersed camping areas near Fort Wingate with several primitive sites located along the dirt road. The road becomes rutted after rain, with accessible sites within the first 1-2 miles from the entrance. At approximately 7,000 feet elevation, temperatures remain cooler than surrounding areas, particularly at night, requiring additional blankets and gear for comfort during all seasons.
What to do
Hiking trails access: Turkey Springs dispersed camping area connects to multiple hiking trails through tall ponderosa pines and oaks. "Road in is very accessible lots of spots available. Great Spot nice and cool among the tall pines and Oaks," notes camper Francois T.
Volcano exploration: Ice Cave & Bandera Volcano offers a unique geological experience with hiking trails. "There is a trail to the ice cave (short but there are stairs) and a loop trail leading to the volcano (about 1.5 miles but wear sturdy shoes and you should be in reasonable shape)," advises Lee D., who recommends doing the hike counterclockwise.
Canyon driving: Six Mile Canyon - Dispersed Camping features scenic roads through varied terrain. "The valley road cuts through green canyon bluffs and rolling hills with good tree coverage. Lots of fun and scenic driving. Spur trails are good 4x4 drives," writes Twan M., who calls the area a "Hidden Gem."
What campers like
Year-round availability: While some dispersed areas close seasonally, Red Rock Park & Campground remains open throughout the year. "Church Rock Trial and Pyramid Rock Trail are both about 3 to 3 and a half miles round trip from the campground. Your surrounded by desert on one side and dark red stone on the other," explains Fain H.
Budget-friendly options: Most dispersed camping areas near Fort Wingate are free, while established campgrounds remain affordable. "The sites with power were already taken, but we can boondock and the pull-through sites were great. Lovely view of the lake with a gorgeous sunset. We wish we weren't just passing through and could stay more than overnight ($20)," shares Grace D. about Bluewater Lake State Park.
Pet-friendly atmosphere: Most campgrounds welcome dogs with minimal restrictions. "Big dog park for the puppers to do their business. No frills, but we didn't need any," notes Chris H. about USA RV Park, one of several dog friendly campgrounds near Fort Wingate.
What you should know
Seasonal closures: Several dispersed camping areas close during winter months. "The gate at the end of the road is closed Dec. 15 to March 31. Parked outside the gate for the night. Looks like a nice area if I could get there," reports Dan J. about Six Mile Canyon.
Weather considerations: Mountain roads can become impassable after rain. "Don't drive the road after a rain," warns Dan J., though Gordy Y. counters: "I drove my Prius in during the summer and it was fine. Granted, I could see how this would be hazardous if the ground was soft and muddy."
Variable road conditions: Six Mile Canyon Road Dispersed Site requires careful driving. "Six Mile canyon road off I40 is a bit rough in places. I did fine in my pro master but if it's muddy or wet I wouldn't attempt it without 4WD," advises Haley S.
Tips for camping with families
Look for established facilities: Quaking Aspen Campground offers clean facilities at reasonable prices. "Campsites well maintained with a grill and firepit on each one. All seem pretty level. We were here in August and it was pleasantly cool. Also plenty of firewood. No running water but there's an outhouse toilet that's clean enough," reports Zoey T.
Consider alternative lodging: Some campgrounds offer cabins for families who prefer not to tent camp. "A fun little campground with space to park an RV or rent a cabin. There are no hookups but you're in a remote part of New Mexico under pines with a Giant night sky above," writes Kristin S. about Ice Cave & Bandera Volcano.
Pack extra layers: The high elevation creates significant temperature drops at night, even in summer. "The elevation at which the cg is at is 8000' makes for cool days and nic crisp cool nights, even in the summertime," notes Charles V. about camping at Quaking Aspen.
Tips from RVers
Level site availability: Bluewater Lake State Park Campground offers various options for RVs. "Nice host greeted us and explained where the best sites were for our very large 5th Wheel. The sites with power were already taken, but we can boondock and the pull-through sites were great," mentions Grace D.
Cell service considerations: Reception varies throughout the area. "TMobile access was mixed. Sometimes limited LTE, sometimes 5G. The paved road is loud in the morning and evening with ranch\quarry traffic, but it is very quiet at night," reports Timothy N. about Turkey Springs.
Size restrictions: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Fort Wingate have limitations on RV size. "We did fine in my pro master but if it's muddy or wet I wouldn't attempt it without 4WD. Beautiful spot once you find a place though. Not many pull outs," notes Haley S. about Six Mile Road dispersed sites.
