Fort Wingate offers diverse camping and glamping options at elevations ranging from 6,500 to 8,000 feet. The high desert climate features dramatic temperature swings, with summer daytime temperatures reaching 85°F but dropping to 45°F at night. Fall brings aspens turning golden in the higher elevations, particularly in the Zuni Mountains surrounding many campgrounds.
What to do
Mountain biking trails: Quaking Aspen Campground provides access to excellent mountain biking opportunities. "Amazing hiking and mtb'ing trails. And, a nice lake," notes Tommy B., who rated this $5 campsite as an exceptional value.
Visit nearby monuments: Lavaland RV Campgrounds sits directly across from El Malpais National Monument. "It's not scenic by any means but, it is close to Mal Pais National Monument (across the street) and the people that work here are super nice," writes Chelsey M.
Wildlife viewing: The Zuni Mountains house abundant wildlife. "We saw abundant wildlife while working in the Zunis, including several brown bears, deer, and elk. While we didn't have any run ins with these guys in camp, be aware that large animals are present in the area," reports Tyler G.
What campers like
Temperature relief: The high elevation provides escape from summer heat. Quaking Aspen Campground sits at 8,000 feet, providing natural cooling. "The elevation at which the cg is at is 8000' makes for cool days and nice crisp cool nights, even in the summertime," states Charles V.
Spacious sites: Campgrounds offer more space between sites than many other regions. "Small campground with massive campsites. This campground could easily squeeze double, if not triple, the sites out of these woods, but someone decided to let everyone breathe a little here," reports Chip.
Clean facilities: USA RV Park maintains well-kept facilities. "Clean showers, a nice heated pool, very friendly staff," notes Bryson D., while Stephanie H. adds, "Cleaner than clean restrooms and laundry facility. Great store and great staff."
What you should know
No water available: Some campgrounds lack drinking water. "Densely wooded PRIMITIVE campground with trails and fishing but NO WATER," cautions Irene L. about Quaking Aspen Campground.
Stickers and terrain: Watch for desert hazards at Lavaland RV Campgrounds. "The stickers are terrible too so be extra careful if you have animals," warns Dana.
Bear precautions: Take proper food storage measures. "Be aware that large animals are present in the area and be sure to take necessary bear-proofing precautions," advises Tyler G.
Seasonal operations: Many campgrounds close during winter months. Quaking Aspen operates from May through September, and can fill quickly on weekends. "Friday night, late May, and we barely got the last spot. No reservations makes this gem a tricky quest when you're running a bit late," notes Chip.
Tips for camping with families
Pizza delivery option: USA RV Park allows for food delivery service. "We were able to get pizza delivered to our RV site which was a big hit with the kids," shares Nicole B.
Dog-friendly accommodations: Multiple campgrounds accommodate pets with designated areas. "There was a pet area with a cinder block 'fence' and several people walked dogs around in the park," notes Susan R.
Pool availability: During summer months, USA RV Park offers swimming opportunities. "They had all of the amenities I wanted, showers, clean bathrooms, lots of pull through sites, and a pool. Just a mile off of I-40," reports Mike F.
Tips from RVers
Level sites: El Morro RV Park and Cabins offers full hookups with relatively level sites. "We stayed in our camper van. We really enjoyed talking with some of the folks who live there and it's a very welcoming community," shares Kathy L.
Easy overnight access: USA RV Park provides convenient stop-off points. "Friendly staff, well stocked store, clean sites. Perfect for an overnight stay along the route. Big dog park for the puppers to do their business. No frills, but we didn't need any," explains Chris H.
Airport noise consideration: Some campgrounds experience aircraft noise. "We were there on a quite busy airport day/night. We don't use ear plugs and it was very noisy from the aircraft," mentions Semi H.
