      Agua Piedra Campground

      Great Northern New Mexico Camp

We stayed at this site on the way back to Texas from our Colorado trip this summer. This is a great National Forest Campground south of Taos in the Carson Forest. The campground is just off the highway and situated in a beautiful mountain pine forest and next to a great trout stream. You have great shade during the hotter summer months. It’s far enough away from the highway that you don’t hear the traffic. It has a huge meadow and group camp site which look fantastic. The individual sites have some privacy between the sites and come equipped with fire pits and picnic tables. We made a reservation but the camp had a number of open sites in the peak summer season. The highlight here is the proximity of great hiking to nearby lakes and fishing in the trout stream. They had great facilities including clean pit toilets and some historic log cabins. They have a camp host and the sites accommodate tents and smaller vans and campers. I would give this another visit on our next trip to NM.

      Hyde Memorial State Park Campground

      RV Electric Loop

There are several loops in this park, in Ludington Black Canyon, the Main Park Loop, a couple Yurt loops, and the small loop we stayed on with RV electric hookups. Its on the left side as you go up, just above the main loop. While there is electric and a vault toilet, be advised there is no water source on this loop. Sites are basic, but nice, with fire rings and concrete picnic tables. We camped with our 21' teardrop and had no problems. We walked through the yurt site just above us, amd they are stunning, with patios and what appears to be heating. Worth a look. No cell service or wifi in the campground.

      Riana - Abiquiu Lake

      Great views, great hosts

Camped 2 nights at site #38 on the Puerco Loop. Reserved thru rec.gov while at the site. Wonderful campground hosts. Site was not quite level for our campervan, but close enough. Good views of lake & surrounding area from site. Vault toilet & drinking water a short walk away. Juniper provided minimal privacy. Site has lantern poll, fire ring, trash can & table. No hookups at this site. $6/night with senior pass. Restroom/shower house within walking distance. Facilities & vault toilets were very clean. Hiking trail in campground. AT&T & T-Mobile service. Overall, quiet & peaceful stay.

      Hyde Memorial State Park Campground

      Location Location Location.

This is just about the closest you can legally camp to Santa Fe. Other than free dispersed camping a bit further out, this is also the best value when it comes to camping near Santa Fe. Full services: trash, well maintained pit toilets, regular camp host/ranger patrols, and generally well behaved neighbors with decently spaced sites.

Pet friendly (on a leash, please!) and well appointed with hiking trails to tire them out. I had never given this place a chance because of how close it is to the city, but this stay was wonderful, not crowded at all despite being close to peak season.

      Riana - Abiquiu Lake

      Clean well-laid out CoE campground

General: 54-site campground in four loops; the Pedernal Loop has water and electric hookups, the Chama and Puerco Loops do not and there is a walk-in tent site loop. There is also overflow camping.

Site Quality: Sites appeared to be mostly level (at least in the Pedernal loop); most were paved but a few were gravel. Most were back in, but some were pull-through. There are two ADA-accessible sites in the Pedernal Loop. Many have reservoir views. Site 14 has a generous-sized paved driveway. Completing the site is a lantern hook, BBQ, and covered picnic table. Too bad it was so darn windy that we could not enjoy these amenities. There was also a garbage can at the end of each site but no recycling that I saw. If you do not need hookups, sites 34 and 39 (in the Puerco loop) provide excellent water views.

Bath/Shower House: Basic with two shower stalls, two toilets, and one sink. Very clean. There are also very clean vault toilets located throughout the campground. Did not use the shower so cannot comment on how well it works.

Activities: The Abiquiu Lake Vista Trail is a 4-mile hike and bike stacked-looped trail (so you can add or duplicate interconnected loops). Boating access is one mile away. Fishing is also popular. There is also a volleyball net and a very nice modern playground. We were there at the end of April, so it was very quiet (which is the way we like it). Shout out to great camp hosts – we were greeted upon arrival and they made sure we didn’t have any questions or concerns. For $16, this is affordable but with the senior pass, $8 is a bonafide bargain!

      4K River Ranch

Best campground in Red River, NM

4k River Ranch is the best campground in Red River. They've got RV sites, apartments, cabins and a beautiful penthouse in the center of town overlooking the town and mountain. The Red River runs through the park, so you can fish in it or in the stocked private pond. The have 50amp & 30amp sites. Pull-thrus, back-ins & buddy sites. WiFi is good for checking emails and browsing websites. Very nice bathrooms with showers plus a laundry room. The staff is fantastic and they've got a really nice new office/store. They're building new cabins along the Red River plus a new pavilion for family gatherings along with a playground for the kids.

      Hyde Memorial State Park Campground

***Previous reviews might be for Black Canyon Forest Service CG?

Black Canyon Campground is just before the Hyde Memorial State Park entrance. From what I could see for the latter, for RV's there's only one option and this is the campground on the left (west side) while heading up 475 after entering the State Park. The other campground on the right (east) is currently closed for renovations. The West side campground has 10 sites - #37-46. That's it.

The Piggyback trailhead is located in the closed campground. Even this looked like it hadn't been used in awhile, with one bridge crossing blockaded. While hiking through I observed that it appears the East side campground has been closed for awhile evidenced by a tree growing through a bench near the Tesuque Creek. I did a little research and one article says the campground closed in 10/23 for a complete solar install. I did see 2 electric boxes in the ground where the road used to be? Another article said this campground closed due to water filtration issues. I believe this because there is still no water at this campground as of 7/25.

All this being said, the park is close to Santa Fe, a beautiful drive up into the mountains and if you can snag one of the few spots in the open campground, it's a win for the location and electric if you need it. Also, a level pad, picnic table, fire ring. I fit a 25' Class C in no problem. I would skip site 37.  Next time, I would stay at Black Canyon. It's cheaper for about the same amenities and I didn't really need the electric hook up.

Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa

Excellent hot springs, convenient RV Park

We absolutely loved our stay at Ojo Caliente. The entire staff is helpful and kind, especially Danny on the grounds and Annie at the restaurant. We wanted spot 17 but it was booked so we got spot 11, which had some privacy as well. As others have mentioned, the hookups are on the opposite side but they will lend you extensions if you need. All spots have picnic tables. The spots further from sitting have most privacy and are still only a 5 minute walk to entrance (I timed it from our site). The best part is that you get early access to the pools, you'll have them nearly to yourselves 7:30-10am and 20% off admission. Also there is free yoga at 9 or 10:40 for guests and all the instructors were fantastic. The onsite restaurant was good, although we wished they had more than 5 bar seats. Would definitely stay again, so many amenities for the same price as a state park!

    Guide to Carson

Cabin accommodations near Carson, New Mexico range from rustic structures to fully furnished rentals with modern amenities. Located in the Carson National Forest at elevations between 8,000-9,000 feet, cabin options provide shelter from temperature fluctuations common in this high-desert mountain region. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing while summer days typically reach 70-85°F with cool evenings.

    What to do

Hiking from your cabin: At Agua Piedra Campground, cabins provide easy access to wilderness trails. "There is a trail head with 2 trails, one atv accessible and one hiking/horse that goes up to Indian Lake. Beautiful views and about 1200' elevation change," notes Tammy V., highlighting opportunities for day hikes from your accommodation.

Hot springs soaking: Mineral hot springs access is available at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa. "Going early or mid week was a far less crowded time," advises Shari G., who appreciated the "multitude of pools of varying temperature and mineral content." Morning soaking offers the most peaceful experience.

Fishing opportunities: Cabins near water provide fishing access without long drives. "The camp ground also has it's own stocked pond. Guest are aloud to fish for two fish per day for each guest in your party," explains Joseph W. about facilities at 4K River Ranch, where cabin guests can catch dinner steps from their accommodation.

    What campers like

Cabin proximity to amenities: Cabins at Red River RV offer convenient access to town services. "The town of Red River is very cool," notes Todd C., while another reviewer mentions that "there is a shuttle that takes you into town." This allows cabin guests to easily access restaurants and shops without moving their vehicles.

Cabin locations with water features: Many visitors appreciate cabins situated near water. "We stayed in spot #59 which puts you along the river that is running through the property. The sound is so peaceful," shares Joseph W. about riverside cabins. Water proximity adds natural ambiance and recreational opportunities.

Temperature control options: Cabin rentals provide temperature management in all seasons. "Daytime temp is in the 70°s and nights are in the 50°s all summer long," explains a reviewer about 4K River Ranch, highlighting why cabins with heating and cooling options are valuable in this region's variable climate.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Cabin availability is extremely limited during peak periods. "We stayed here for 10 days during the 'off season' at the end of April. It was beautiful and quiet," mentions Corrie L., suggesting that planning for non-peak times increases options and reduces costs.

Bathroom facilities vary: Cabin bathroom access differs significantly between properties. "The campground is rustic. Water and electric only," notes one camper, while another states "Clean restrooms and showers but no changing stalls in either mens/womens shower." Confirm bathroom details before booking.

Kitchen provisions: Most cabin rentals require guests to bring cooking supplies. Some properties like Angel Nest RV Retreat offer community spaces: "It's a quite place with a gathering hall to watch TV or charge your devices if need be," notes Jeremy S., but cabin kitchens remain basic.

    Tips for camping with families

Age restrictions: Some properties limit child access to facilities. "I would have given this property 5 stars but they've become unfriendly to families. Children under 13 are not allowed in the hot springs," warns Colorado C. about specific amenity limitations at Ojo Caliente.

Cabin selection strategy: For families, request cabins with outdoor space. "All spots have picnic tables," notes Jolene C., while another reviewer mentions "Nice level site" as important considerations for family comfort and meal preparation outside cabin confines.

Entertainment options: Look for cabins near recreational amenities. "Hike or mountain bike right from your campsite," suggests one reviewer, while another mentions "They have a nice fenced dog park to let your dogs run free for a bit," highlighting features important for families traveling with children and pets.

    Tips from RVers

Cabin utilities: Questa Lodge & RV Resort cabins offer reliable utilities. "Nicely landscaped with two ponds and a river walk. Nicely shaded, level sites with full hookups," reports Mev W., noting the consistent power supply important for campers needing electricity for medical equipment or working remotely.

Communication options: Internet and cell service varies significantly between cabin locations. "Wifi has been pretty good and no problem with cell service (we have Verizon)," reports one cabin guest, while another notes "We had great Wi-Fi as well." Confirm connectivity if working remotely from cabin accommodations.

Supply planning: Grocery access is limited near many cabin locations. "The nearest grocery/convenience store is just down the road, but the selection is pretty limited," explains a reviewer, suggesting guests stock essential supplies before arrival at remote cabin locations.
