I've been here a few times, every time I'm here I barely touch my phone," notes Tylen L. from Turkey Swamp Park. During summer months, various watercraft are available for rental.
Archery practice: Turkey Swamp Park maintains an archery range for visitors. "Archery, boating, fishing, and hiking. Boat rental rates are acceptable and there are four different styles to choose from," reports Dan W. The range accommodates beginners and experienced archers.
Seasonal ice skating: Winter activities expand recreational options beyond typical camping seasons. "Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels. Ice skate on the lake in the winter or just enjoy a gorgeous walk in the woods," recommends Patrick M. about Allaire State Park.

Spacious campsites: Campgrounds in the region typically provide generous site dimensions. "Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy. A lantern hook, picnic table, and fire ring complete each site," reports Lee D. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms are consistently mentioned by campers. "The bathrooms were clean. Close by to a couple of nice state parks. Cute sheep and goats that wander about during the day! Sweet little spot," shares Jami about Mountainview Campground, located approximately 50 miles west of Hazlet.
Wooded privacy: Natural screening provides separation between campsites. "Sites are in the woods and widely spaced apart to give you privacy and the feeling of being out in the Forrest," notes Katheryn N. The wooded settings create a more secluded camping experience despite relatively busy campgrounds.
What you should know
Insect awareness: Tick activity requires preventive measures in this region. "By the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2. That was so crazy because we were just sitting by our camper," cautions LAURA Y. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Road conditions: Unpaved roads throughout campgrounds may present challenges. "As soon as you turn off the main road to the park, all roads are dirt, which was a bit surprising. They were well-maintained and in dry weather, not a problem, but probably not if it was rainy," observes Lee D.
Limited equestrian amenities: While searching for horse campgrounds near Hazlet, New Jersey, be aware that dedicated equestrian facilities are scarce. At Brendan Byrne State Forest, approximately 45 miles southwest of Hazlet, "Lots of trails nearby, though some of the trails are shared with motorized vehicles/bicyclists," mentions Vinayak Vinod C.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple age-appropriate play areas are available at some parks. "There are age-appropriate playgrounds both in the campground and by the office," notes Lee D. about recreation options at Turkey Swamp Park.
Minimal insect concerns: Some seasonal periods offer reduced bug activity. "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite!" reports JAEWOOK P. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Educational opportunities: Historical sites enhance camping trips for families. At Allaire State Park, approximately 20 miles south of Hazlet, "Working village and antique train are available most of the year. There are also lots of festivals throughout the summer months," informs Beau B.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Electrical and water connections vary by campground. "Sites came with fire pit, large picnic bench, and lamp stand. Plenty of parking space. Good tree coverage," describes Graham D. about Turkey Swamp Park. Most RV sites include water and electric connections.
Pull-through accessibility: Some campgrounds accommodate easier parking for large vehicles. "Sites in Loops B-E all have pull-thru driveways. Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy," notes Lee D. about Spruce Run Recreation Area.
Leveling requirements: Site terrain may require adjustment equipment. "Some sites unlevel. Bring a LONG water hose. Nice lake. Showers and washers and dryers," advises Shawn about Turkey Swamp Park. Pack leveling blocks for these locations.
