Best Equestrian Camping near Gateway National Recreation Area

The horse camping options near Gateway National Recreation Area are limited, with no facilities specifically designed for equestrian use. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City provides water and electric hookups for RVs but lacks designated horse corrals or equine accommodations. The campground functions primarily as a base for visitors exploring New York City rather than for trail riding opportunities. Sites are situated in what several visitors describe as essentially a parking lot with minimal camping amenities.

Turkey Swamp Park and Allaire State Park offer more traditional camping environments but neither features dedicated horse facilities. Allaire State Park contains hiking trails and is currently temporarily closed for renovations. The park previously offered tent sites, RV spots, and cabins with access to bathroom facilities, though these were frequently reported as poorly maintained. Most campsites in the region lack the essential equestrian amenities such as hitching posts, corrals, wash stations, or manure disposal areas necessary for proper horse camping.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    My favorite!

We stayed in New Jersey for our 5th campground on the East Coast: Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold. This is a County park.

     Near some Revolutionary War battlefields.

I really liked this park! They have 2283 acres. A 17 acre lake. Some hiking trails & a nice campground! The sites are all pullthrough. There's lots of vegetation for "privacy". We had a site on the perimeter, which are forest views. Only problem is none of the roads are paved. All are packed sand. We could tell it rained recently because of the muddy tracks. Fortunately it didn't rain while we were there!

Shower/bathrooms are clean, but dated. They're checked regularly. The bath house is for the entire campground. 3 out of the 4 women's were working. There's a shared dressing area.

There's a laundry that doesn't take quarters. EPay.

There's a nice playground in the campground.

They have 3 cabins for rent, with forest views.

The lake has fishing & boat rentals. No gas motors. There's no swimming at the lake. Cell service was fair.. No WiFi.

    They have an archery range.

This was my favorite campground on our trip! I really enjoyed camping here! There's a rustic retro quality to the place. I adored the campsites & I didn't see any really bad ones.

    Location location location

Basicly a parking lot, but the location can't be beat. 2 ferries that run to Manhattan. Path train is a 12 minute walk away that will take you yyo manhatten. Jersey city has a lot of restaurants and bars walking distance. Wonderful state park, liberty park, a bike ride ride away. Our experience was very good.

They also have a clean laundry room on site.

Allaire State Park - TEMPORARILY CLOSED

Situated in nature, fun events in summer, close to beaches"

Allaire State Park is a favorite spot of mine. In addition to their tent sites and group gathering areas (we have had several family reunions here), we enjoy all the activities! There is a historical village where you can visit a blacksmith shop and other spaces to learn about the history. They have a flea market many weekends in the summer months and in early fall. They also. Have Halloween themed events like a hayride. Lots of walking paths surround the park & you are also close to Belmar, Point Pleasant, Manasquan (all fun shore towns). Bathroom maintenance could use some sprucing up, but other than that- great place to visit.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore.ïżŒ Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views.ïżŒ 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking.ïżŒ there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activitiesïżŒ.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.ïżŒ) Good OTA television signal also.ïżŒ

We spent three days here in July 2021.

    Liberty Harbor RV Park

    Close to NYC!

This RV park is literally just a parking lot and quite expensive for what it is.

The location is great, but the surrounding streets may be hard to maneuver with an RV if you’re a newbie. You can see the Statue of Liberty from the park, and there were several cafes and restaurants within walking distance.

If you’re looking for actual amenities, this probably isn’t the park for you. But if you just need a base camp for doing tourist activities in NYC then this place will do.

There is 24 hour security which is nice as well. We felt safe while we were there, but it was also fairly empty too.

    Liberty Harbor RV Park

    Glorified Parking Lot

So... the “campground” is nothing special. Literally a parking lot with water & electric hookups. Larger rigs will barely have a yard. And don’t bet on a private picnic table. On a slow checkout day, you might get lucky enough to not wait in line for the dump station.

We’ve paid much less for “more”... the $120 price per night was ridiculous. But being that they have no competitors in the area (and they know it), RVers wanting a quick escape to see NYC can get it here. The ONLY thing we really liked about it was it’s convenient location to the city with easy access to the ferry boats.

The area itself was under a ton of construction when we drove in, which meant for difficult to navigate roads and we barely squeezed by larger trucks who were also in the roadways. But we did manage to walk our way to the marina restaurant “Surf City”, which was a unique and fun spot for end of day dinner & drinks.

We would only consider staying here again during the “off-season” months when the campground isn’t busy. The woman who checked us in was very pleasant and helpful when helping us figure out how to get around without driving.

    Turkey Swamp Park

Nice wooded sites, fishing lake & trails

Water is more than 40 feet away from your parking so 25' hose if not enough.

If you have GFIC in your RV, ask for a non-GFIC site, or it will trip on you.

Public use available for picnics near lake.

Last week of June was not busy. Many open sites.

    Liberty Harbor RV Park

Functional with excellent access to the City

Very plain & functional, no frills but right on the harbor & on the very edge of Jersey City, close to a ferry & the train that takes u across to New York City. Shopping & restraunts are right next door. We brought scooters & had a great stay! Plus you can see the Statue of Liberty from there!

Guide to Gateway National Recreation Area

Camping options near Gateway National Recreation Area are primarily concentrated in New Jersey, approximately 30-45 minutes from the park's Sandy Hook Unit. The region's low-lying coastal terrain offers limited equestrian-specific camping facilities, and most options require reservations throughout the peak summer season when temperatures average 75-85°F. Winter camping is available at select locations with reduced services.

What to do

Boating and fishing: Turkey Swamp Park features a lake with multiple watercraft rental options. Dan W. notes, "Boat rental rates are acceptable and there are four different styles to choose from." The park also has dedicated fishing areas where bait can be purchased at the Ranger office.

Hiking and biking: Allaire State Park offers trails ranging from easy paved paths to several miles of single track. Beau B. reports, "Mountain Biking from easy, paved trails to several miles of single track with everything in between." The park is conveniently located for cyclists wanting to reach coastal areas, with Dan X. adding, "A really nice bike ride to Ocean Grove and other beach towns."

Archery: Turkey Swamp Park maintains an archery range with hay barrels for target practice. Patrick M. recommends, "Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels." This activity provides a unique outdoor option not commonly found at other regional parks.

What campers like

Private wooded sites: Turkey Swamp Park receives positive reviews for its natural setting. Katheryn N. states, "Sites are in the woods and widely spaced apart to give you privacy and the feeling of being out in the Forrest." The park offers tent sites, RV hookups, and permits placing tents on RV sites at no extra charge.

Cabin accommodations: Allaire State Park features rustic cabin options for visitors seeking alternatives to tent or RV camping. Erik M. describes, "Cabins are no frills yet very nice no electricity they are equipi with 4 bunks a LG picnic table and a wood stove for heat. Also a nice porch fire ring and a charcoal grill." These cabins provide basic shelter with wilderness proximity.

Urban access: Liberty Harbor RV Park provides convenient transportation options to New York City. Emily L. explains, "Very plain & functional, no frills but right on the harbor & on the very edge of Jersey City, close to a ferry & the train that takes u across to New York City." The campground's proximity to public transit makes it ideal for combining urban exploration with outdoor accommodation.

What you should know

Limited equestrian facilities: None of the campgrounds near Gateway National Recreation Area provide dedicated horse camping amenities. While some parks have hiking and biking trails, they lack essential equestrian infrastructure such as stalls, corrals, or designated horse trails.

Site conditions and layout: Many reviewers note that Liberty Harbor RV Park functions primarily as a paved parking area rather than a traditional campground. Keith and Tia S. advise, "This is all about location. The closest RV park to NYC. It's basically a parking lot with a dump station. Not much else. Pick one of the larger end row sites to get a little extra elbow room."

Insect concerns: Turkey Swamp Park visitors should prepare for potential tick encounters, particularly during warmer months. LAURA Y. warns, "By the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2. That was so crazy because we were just sitting by our camper."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Turkey Swamp Park provides dedicated play areas for younger visitors. Lee D. notes, "There are age-appropriate playgrounds both in the campground and by the office." These facilities offer recreational options for children between hiking or water activities.

Historical attractions: Allaire State Park features educational opportunities beyond natural attractions. Beau B. highlights, "Working village and antique train are available most of the year, there are also lots of festivals throughout the summer months." These historical elements provide educational components for family visits.

Bug prevention: Parents camping with children should pack appropriate insect repellent, though experiences vary. JAEWOOK P. shares a positive experience, "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite!"

Tips from RVers

Arrival logistics: Liberty Harbor RV Park requires careful navigation when approaching from highways. Joe R. advises, "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze."

Hookup preparation: Turkey Swamp Park provides hookups but requires specific equipment. Shawn mentions, "Some sites unlevel. Bring a LONG water hose." This practical advice helps RVers prepare properly for their stay with necessary extension equipment.

Dump station access: Multiple reviewers note that Liberty Harbor's dump station can become congested during busy checkout periods. Shawn B. cautions, "There is a dump station, but not the easiest to use." RVers should plan for potential waiting times or consider alternative dumping locations when departing during peak periods.
