Delaware Seashore State Park Campground provides equestrian access in a coastal setting between Rehoboth Beach and the Indian River Bay. The campground sits at near sea level elevation with flat terrain ideal for horse trailers and beginning riders. Weather conditions vary seasonally with strong winds common throughout the year, particularly at the north campground where gusts can exceed 50 mph.
What to do
Beach riding opportunities: Designated beach areas at Delaware Seashore allow for shoreline riding during specific seasons and hours. "The beach on the other side had no lifeguard, but dogs were allowed on that beach and the water seemed a bit calmer and clearer over there," notes Gayle B. about the less crowded north side beach at Delaware Seashore State Park Campground.
Bay side explorations: The protected waters on the bay side offer calmer conditions for riders and horses. "We like the bay side for the kids no waves," shares Rich E., highlighting the gentler water conditions that horses may also prefer.
Bridge viewing: The illuminated Charles W. Cullen Memorial Bridge creates a unique backdrop for evening rides. "My favorite thing is at night when the rt.1 bridge lights up blue. Love that bridge," writes Dawn T. about the distinctive nighttime feature.
What campers like
Direct beach access: Sites position campers within walking distance to both bay and ocean shorelines for varied riding terrain. "Ocean was a short 5 minute walk from our campsite—along with a playground and delicious restaurant," reports Gayle B. about the convenience of Blackbird State Forest Campground.
Level site conditions: The flat, open terrain throughout the campground accommodates horse trailers and equipment. "Sites were pretty level (within 2 inches) and had centrally located bathhouse," explains Joe R. about the north campground area.
Multiple recreational options: The area supports fishing and riding activities in one location. "This is a popular fishing spot on the inlet. There is direct access to the beach under the bridge where there are restaurants, concessions, and other activities," states Lee D.
What you should know
Wind exposure considerations: The open coastal location experiences significant wind that can affect both horses and camping equipment. "The winds were nuts and over 50mph. We switched sites to spare our slide side, so caution to look at windy before going," warns Joe R. at Delaware Seashore State Park Campground.
Site spacing limitations: Campsites lack vegetation barriers between spaces. "There is zero privacy/separation between sites, but this is the price you pay for easy and close beach access," explains Lee D. about the tradeoff between convenience and privacy.
Flooding risks: Low-lying areas throughout the campground can collect water during storms. "It does flood in the rain," cautions Nicole S. about a consideration especially important for horse owners.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Children can utilize modern play equipment when not participating in equestrian activities. "The playground is large and modern," notes Lee D. about the facility at Delaware Seashore State Park Campground.
Beach options for children: Families can choose between ocean and bay beaches based on wave conditions. "We like the bay side for the kids no waves," recommends Rich E., highlighting the safer swimming conditions on the calmer side.
Multi-generational appeal: The area attracts repeat visitors across family generations. "My family loves this campground. I have been going there as a very young child to now as a grandmother," shares Dawn T.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: Choose non-hookup areas for more space during weekday stays. "We were there on a Monday the week after Memorial Day and while the sites with the hookups were completely full, there were plenty of empty non-hookup sites," advises Lee D. at Delaware Seashore State Park Campground.
Site dimensions: RV sites may be smaller than advertised specifications. "Sites were a bit tight; I believe online it says they're 45x30 but I find that hard to believe. Our trailer is almost 38 feet and we only had a little room left over," cautions Gayle B.
Weekend noise considerations: Expect increased noise levels during peak periods. "Every night was quiet except Friday—that's when our neighbors decided to get drunk and sing karaoke until 2am," reports Gayle B. about the weekend atmosphere.
