Indian Cave State Park features pet-friendly campgrounds at both Ash Grove and Hackberry Hollow, allowing visitors to bring their dogs while enjoying the park's extensive trail system. These established campgrounds provide electric hookups, drinking water, picnic tables, and reservable sites suitable for both tent and RV camping. While pets are welcome throughout the park, they must remain leashed at all times. Both campgrounds offer full amenities including showers, toilets, and sanitary dump stations. The camping areas provide spacious sites with partial shade from mature trees, though some sites may have uneven terrain. Daily park entrance fees apply in addition to camping fees, with Nebraska residents paying $6 and out-of-state visitors $12.

Hiking trails throughout Indian Cave State Park accommodate leashed dogs, with multiple path options ranging from easy walks to more challenging terrain. Visitors frequently encounter wildlife including raccoons, which are particularly active around the campgrounds after dark. Trails connect to historic sites including the Indian Cave, though boardwalks to the cave may occasionally be closed for repairs. The park's remote location means limited cell service and no nearby conveniences, so campers should bring all pet supplies needed for their stay. R U Lost RV Lots in nearby Nemaha offers an alternative pet-friendly camping option with full hookups. While campgrounds can become crowded during October for Halloween festivities, spring and fall camping provides comfortable temperatures for pets and access to the park's scenic hiking options.

      Trippin’ thru Nebraska

Coming from MO, Nebraska is usually just a one night stop for us (as we head onto bigger and cooler states). We were happy to find this clean RV park near Nebraska City. Big, but quiet. Friendly staff. Homey. Green space. Great dog park.

Victorian Acres RV Park & Campground

      Nice campground but neighbors noisy

Just stopped for one night. Some highway and train noise whenever outside. Neighbor playing music outside late at night (after 10pm) which was annoying. Came after hours and name was left on board with check in info: Sites are nice with trees and vegetation but not very level. Dog park is nice though

      Would recommend for a stopover

Victorian Acres RV Park & Campground

      Great place!

We only stayed here one night but would have gladly stayed longer. We didn't use everything but it seems to have all the amenities you might need - full hookups, propane, showers, laundry, dog park, play space for kids.

We were pretty close to our neighbors but not so close that it felt uncomfortable. Staff accommodated our need for a late check-in and even called to make sure we knew how to get to our site.

Really beautiful surrounding landscape and not too much road noise. Not sure if that might change depending on the site.

All in all, a good experience!

      Stanton Lake Park

Looks like a great city park

Let me start out by saying this is an absolute beautiful city park. They have a little fishing lake, disc golf, volleyball courts, a playground, and a dog park. They do offer camping for rvs as well as tents and at a very affordable price. If you are like me and feel kind of funny about camping in the middle of a city. This place may still get you out of a pinch while traveling, and yes they have showers and very clean bathrooms. Don't knock it til you try it.

Victorian Acres RV Park & Campground

Fine for a 1 night stay!

Victorian Acres was fine for one night. Not a lot to say about it. It backs up to the highway, but after a long day of driving we slept through the noise. There weren’t any fire pits because “it was too cold”. That’s exactly why we wanted one. The bathhouse was ok. The women’s bathroom was fine, even large for the size of the campground. Unfortunately, both toilets in the men’s bathroom were backed up and broken, huge bummer! 💩 There was a small dog park , we didn’t get to use it since we got in late and left early so I cannot comment on the condition. We were on site 55, easy to access and leave from. It was sort of level, but we still felt like we were tipping sideways a bit in the van. There were 30amp electric and water hookups.

      Atchison State Fishing Lake

Massive Hill, but doable. 7 day stay limit.

I took my skoolie there, and I thought we were supposed to park near the cabin, however, it's the part to the left of the cabin that we are supposed to camp at. The website actually forbids anybody camping around the cabin, so you need to use the campsites directly to the west, where there's a bunch of piers, sites, and bathrooms. We drove down 322nd Rd. to get to our site near the bathrooms across from the maintenance building. That road is gradual enough that I was able to get my short bus down it safely without tipping over.

The management guy here is pretty cool and he let me know that it's a 7 day stay not 14 hung out and pet my dog and talked to me for a little bit. That was pretty nice.

      Friendly Staff

Centrally located and walkable. There is a small lake close by that we walked the dogs too. Also 20 minute bike ride to GSR Casino. I appreciated the free filtered water dispenser in the office.

      Duck Creek Recreation Area

      New Campground by Secluded Lake

This park is a beautiful lake. We saw white pelicans and blue herons on this visit but it is not uncommon to see hawks, owls, and eagles in the area. This is a new park dedicated this year by the Nemaha NRD: sort of a multi-county natural resource agency found exclusively in Nebraska.

The picnic tables, vault toilets, paved walking trails, playground equipment are all new and well laid out. Gravel slabs with electrical hookup are only $12 a night but that is deceiving because you need to purchase a $5 day pass or $15 annual pass to come to the park. Yet even the some of the primitive sites have slabs for a pop-up and did not appear to cost anything beyond your vehicle pass.

The lake is too small for any boat with more than a trolling motor (there is a boat ramp) and should be outstanding for a kayak or canoe. Fishing should be great here. Paved trail and wide gravel slabs with raised fire pits should make this a great rustic getaway for handicapped campers. There is even a paved path to the end of a jetty of fishing in the lake.

This park is close to the Steamboat Trace Hiking/Biking Trail which is a 26-mile trail following the bluffs and coming within spitting distance of the Missouri River. Peru Nebraska is close, home of one of the oldest colleges this side of the Mississippi. Peru is also close for limited supplies such as Ice and band-aids. Auburn and Nebraska City are both about 10 miles away, Neb City has a Walmart.

I think this park is best for a quiet weekend getaway. I recommend you contact the NRD for an annual pass and take advantage of the other parks they operate. You could hike or Bike the Trace and tent camp for free!

    Guide to Shubert

Indian Cave State Park sits within the Missouri River bluffs region in Nebraska at approximately 900-1,100 feet elevation. This area features rolling hills, dense forest, and limestone formations carved by glacial activity. Summer temperatures average 85°F with high humidity while spring and fall offer milder conditions with temperatures between 55-75°F, making them popular camping seasons for pet owners.

    What to do

Equestrian adventures: Horse owners can utilize specialized camping facilities at Hackberry Hollow Campground. "There are about 20 miles to hike in this park and there is a special camping area for folks who bring horses. I was here in the spring but was told fall is the best time because of the changes in the trees," notes James D.

Explore the historic structures: Beyond the cave itself, the park contains preserved buildings and historic sites. "This park also has some petrogylphs, the only down side of this park is that people seemed to have attempted to make their own petroglyphs with spraypaint," explains Jill R. at Ash Grove Campground.

Disc golf: Stanton Lake Park offers an 18-hole disc golf course as part of their recreational facilities. "This campground is mainly for RVs. The park also has a frisbee golf course. The lake/pond has a paved sidewalk surrounding it with plenty of benches scattered to just rest or enjoy the lake and it's wildlife," describes Shannon G.

    What campers like

Vegetable gardens: Campers at R U Lost - RV Lots enjoy access to fresh produce. "We arrived in the area, and she greets us with a smile and welcomes us to 'R U LOST- RV lots.' The vegetable garden looks delicious and 'you can have as much as you want, just leave me one!'" shares R U Lost? P.

Quiet, secluded fishing spots: Local conservation areas offer peaceful fishing without crowds. "This place is a private, and quiet area. You almost get a vibe at first that your somewhere you shouldn't be. Than you get a look at that lake and forget about it. Charity lake sits in between or in a valley of hills," explains Tony B. about Charity Lake.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The region features abundant wildlife observation chances. "You can hear the bull frogs, geese, and coyotes when the sun goes down. There is a train track behind the lake, and it seems to have a train every few hours that you can hear from your site," notes Shannon G. about the natural soundscape at Stanton Lake Park.

    What you should know

Seasonal flooding concerns: Some campgrounds in the area face periodic flooding issues. "I work close to this park and watched as the town was making progress in restoring it to a nice campsite. Unfortunately, the river has flooded it out as of June 28, 2024 and it will likely be unusable for at least the remainder of this season," warns John A. about Brownville Riverside Park.

Limited cellular service: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Shubert have poor connectivity. "Forget about wifi, hard to find if you can find it at all and no attena tv, your really out in the middle of nowhere, but its a nice park to get away," advises Steve W. at Ash Grove Campground.

Plan for self-sufficiency: The remote location requires preparation. "Gas up when you can! This beautiful state park is in the middle of the Nebraskan Ozarks, and is seriously one of the most beautiful state parks in the Midwest," advises Donna H., noting the distance from services and supplies.

    Tips for camping with families

Halloween festivities: Big Lake State Park Campground offers structured activities for children. "The state park is well maintained but doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles! They have really nice little cabins for rent is camping isn't your strong suit! Lots of flat roads for biking though!" mentions Carissa H.

Pet-friendly hiking trails: The trail system accommodates families with varying abilities and pets. "The tent campgrounds were pretty empty and we were able to find a nice spot off the road. We loved the hiking trails through the trees and difficult terrain," shares Sarah J., describing her experience at Ash Grove Campground.

Wildlife awareness: Be prepared for animal encounters at pet friendly campgrounds near Shubert. "A giant raccoon tried to get into my cooler 10 minutes after we turned out our lights for the night. Lookout for ticks," warns Michael M., highlighting the importance of proper food storage and tick prevention, especially with pets.

    Tips from RVers

Limited dump stations: Plan accordingly for waste disposal. "Only downside, with 134 RV sites there is only one dump station, just dont get in a hurry leaving if you have to dump your RV," advises Steve W. about Ash Grove Campground.

Level site considerations: The terrain requires preparation. "Bring your levellers because it's very, very hilly. I didn't use the shower or restrooms, but the surrounding facilities were clean and well kept," notes Donna H. at Hackberry Hollow Campground.

Alternative RV camping options: For those seeking full hookups outside the state park, private options exist. "This was truly a very pleasant camping site for us! Owners- Colleen& Jim- are so kind and helpful! It is a small, intimate campground with only 7 sites available," shares Jody J. about their stay at R U Lost RV Lots.
