Timber Point Wetland features free camping with pet-friendly policies throughout its secluded lakeside setting. Campers with dogs can utilize the three gravel slabs positioned close to the vault toilet and boat ramp. The site permits leashed pets throughout the grounds without breed restrictions or additional fees. Small but well-maintained, the wetland area provides fishing opportunities while allowing pets to enjoy the cross-country trails often used for races. Area trails remain well-kept despite limited amenities, with the nearby Oak Creek Trail extending from Valparaiso to Brainard offering additional pet exercise options. Bullfrogs create a natural soundtrack throughout evenings at the lakeside sites.

Red Cedar Lake and Czechland Lake Recreation Area provide contrasting pet-friendly camping experiences near Brainard. Red Cedar offers rustic, free camping with basic toilet facilities and open lake views where pets can explore deer trails alongside their owners. Czechland Lake provides more developed options with $18-20 electric hookups (30/50 amp available), fire rings, and picnic tables at most sites. The lake features well-maintained walking paths perfect for dog walking, though some campsites require leveling blocks due to hillside positioning. Both lakes allow non-motorized boating for campers wanting to bring pets along during water activities. Most tent camping areas remain close to water access, though mosquitoes can be problematic in wooded sections near the shoreline during summer months.

      Platte River State Park Campground

      Pleasant Surprise!

We were passing through Nebraska and opted to stay the night here. The campground is new and will be even nicer when the trees are big enough to provide shade. We only stayed one night but enjoyed the walk to the small waterfall in the park. There is a large dog park, clean restrooms and nice trails for walking.

      Nice park

Stayed here for a week over 4th of July, 2020 amid COVID19 restrictions. Lots of shade, though some sites are full sun. Great dog park: large, secure and shaded. Play ground, basketball, pool, family activities. Very clean restrooms. Good camp store with decent prices. Easy access to Omaha.

      Camp A Way Campground

      Great Location... Very Crowded!

This was a great location to explore different areas but it is a very crowded location. Some people like that and visiting with everyone.  That is not for me.  The campground is well maintained, the staff is friendly and our dogs enjoyed the dog park on the property.

      Double Nickel Campground

Very nice grounds and great amenities

Popped in for a quick one night stay on our way west. Chose this place based on reviews on The Dyrt. It is mid week in October but it's so quiet, which we really like. Great pull through spaces with full hook ups and fantastic WiFi which allowed me to get some much needed work in. When I told the owner we had two dogs he put us directly across from the dog park which our pups really liked. Super cute touches around the place including bench swings at all the sites. Looks like the place could be great for families in the summer.

It is directly adjacent to the highway so there is some noise but it's not too bad. We actually felt it was quiet and relaxing.

      Camp A Way Campground

      Awesome

The park is well kept, the sites have plenty of space to them so you don’t feel like you’re on top of someone else’s camper. There’s playgrounds and a pool, a dog park, basketball court and disc golf. The nicest park we’ve stayed at for sure.

    Guide to Brainard

Brainard, Nebraska sits in the eastern plains at approximately 1,640 feet elevation, where summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F while winter lows can drop below zero. The surrounding area features rolling hills with several small lakes and recreation areas created by the Lower Platte North Natural Resources District (NRD). These lakes provide overnight camping options where visitors can experience Nebraska's prairie landscape without traveling far from Lincoln.

    What to do

Kayaking and paddleboarding opportunities: Branched Oak Lake offers a large no-wake area perfect for non-motorized water activities. "There's a huge no-wake area of the lake for kayaking and paddle boarding. They also offer boat rentals," reports Jordan H. from Branched Oak Lake State Recreation Area.

Archery practice: Some campgrounds maintain specialized facilities beyond standard camping amenities. "We enjoyed the archery range and took plenty of walks," mentions Pat V. about Branched Oak Lake State Recreation Area.

Night sky viewing: The rural setting around Brainard provides excellent stargazing conditions away from city lights. "Nighttime is great for stargazing and they have pretty stellar sunrises," notes Pat V., who visited for a mountain bike race weekend.

Hiking regional trails: Access the Oak Creek Trail which runs between Valparaiso and Brainard. "The village of Valparaiso allows camping at the city park at the trailhead to the Oak Creek trail. Camping is free and there are electric hookups and water at the park," explains Charles C. about Valparaiso.

    What campers like

Solitude and wildlife viewing: Less developed camping areas offer quieter experiences with natural wildlife encounters. "I loved this area. My favorite campgrounds are the ones that are a little out of the way on unpaved roads in the middle of nowhere :-) there was a pretty lake, a bathroom, a dumpster, and a map of the hikes. The stars were spectacular! There's some black cows nearby that kind of stare at you with no emotion," shares Aspen H. about Timber Point Wetland.

Camping near fishing access: Many sites place campers directly adjacent to fishing spots. "Middle Oak Creek campground has a row of 10-12 electrical spots that are perfect for shore fishing, kayak launch, lakeside views!" explains Jen K. about Branched Oak Lake.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds in the region maintain serviceable restroom facilities. "The bathroom was clean albeit flinty. No stores in the park-office (which was anyway closed due to the pandemic), so bring everything (firewood too) along," advises Patheeka about Branched Oak Lake State Recreation Area.

Lakeside tent sites: Several campgrounds allow tent setup directly along shorelines. "We went for the location with good trees that we found for hammocks right near the water (.. and bullfrogs.) The vault toilet was closed due to COVID19. Nice quiet area with lots of fireflies, seemed well maintained," reports Abigail H.

    What you should know

Weather considerations: Nebraska weather can be extreme in any season. "5 night stay in late June. 2 days after damaging storm. Lots of broken branches and one totalled 5th wheel but still a very pretty park," Kevin A. shares about Pawnee Dam Site 14 Campground.

Limited amenities at free sites: NRD lakes often provide minimal facilities. "This free camping area is low on amenities, but is well kept and close to the Oak Creek Trail which extends from Valparaiso to Brainard Nebraska," notes Charles C. about Timber Point Wetland.

Weekend crowding: Popular areas fill quickly during summer weekends. "VERY BUSY campground as it is super close to a highly populated city. Plan ahead and reserve a spot or go early in the week otherwise you won't get a pad!!!" warns Jen K. about Branched Oak Lake.

Dog-friendly policies vary: Most dog friendly campgrounds near Brainard require leashes. "Dogs welcome but must be leashed," explains Kyla B. about Czechland Lake Recreation Area.

    Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds for children: Several campgrounds maintain dedicated play areas. "Nice playgrounds at both camp areas. Free showers are a great amenity as well," mentions Jen K. about Branched Oak Lake.

Swimming access: Lakes with designated swimming areas provide safer water recreation. "They have a swimming beach at Area 1 as well but it's too cold this time of year," notes Kyle S. about Area One Campground.

Camping near town amenities: Proximity to small towns offers additional activities. "Being close to town allowed us to have a great anniversary dinner at a steakhouse!" shares Pat V. about Lake Wanahoo State Recreation Area.

Pet-friendly trails: Most areas welcome pets on walking paths. "Well-maintained walking trails that are perfect for dogs," comments Chris A. about Czechland Lake Recreation Area.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at some locations. "Some sites are very unlevel," warns Chris A. about Czechland Lake Recreation Area, adding "note that you will need to bring leveling blocks for nearly every site since the campground is built on a hill."

Payment methods: Many campgrounds now offer electronic payment options. "Pay with your phone with QR code scan to pay so no need to have cash or check," advises Stacy D. about Czechland Lake Recreation Area, where campsites include 30/50 amp service for $20 per night.

Water access points: Water fill stations may not be conveniently located. "When pulling your RV out here the water fill is in an awkward spot in a parking lot of the campground. To get to the dump station you have to leave the campground, get on the highway and drive to the opposite side of the lake to the day use area," explains Pat V. about Lake Wanahoo.

RV length considerations: Smaller campgrounds may present challenges for larger rigs. "May be difficult parking for larger rigs (35ft+) due to the one way entrance and curvature of the campground," notes Kyla B. about Czechland Lake Recreation Area.
