    Hooper Park

    Great campground and park

Nice place, quite and inviting. Walking distance to all the amenities of town. This park has a pit toilet and flush toilets, also showers, potable water and garbage service. Huge spots with lots of space. Pull through spots perfect for RV or tent camping. Sites available with or without hookups. Playground for kids and it's pet friendly! We love this park.

    Fort Harrison RV Park

The Juice is not Worth the Squeeze

Our goal is to leave an unbiased review for future campers. First, don’t check in until 2:00 PM. The billeting office is closed for lunch and doesn’t get back until 2:00. As you don’t have a site number and you’ll need a key for the utilities, it will not do you any good to arrive early. Using our RV GPS, we headed off I-90 onto US-12 into Helena. At West Helena we turned on Williams St., which brought us to the VA Medical Center, then less than a 1/4 mile further to the South Gate. The gate is locked. When we called 406-324-3970(main gate) prior to our arrival, we were told to park in front of the gate and call the number on the post to have security come and let us in. The private security guard checked our IDs, reservation confirmation email, and then called in our names and truck license plate number. We were then told to head to the three story building where the billeting office is located and park in front of the building near the stepped entrance. This is not a large base/post, so don’t worry about getting lost. A lot of reviews talked about going through the North Gate, but as of this writing, they are using the South Gate for arrivals and departures. The main gate barriers are too narrow for a large RV. The billeting office is on the first floor straight a few yards and to the right after you enter the building and also where the free laundry is located. The FamCamp campground (CG) was simple to find, and we went to pull through FHU site 7 with 50/30/20 AMP. Not all the sites in this small CG have 50 AMP. The pull through was easy enough to get into, but its narrow with 9” high cement curbs, which makes getting your sewer up and over a bit of a challenge. They placed a brick thing at each site to help level your sewer hose. Also, depending on how your stairs deploy, dealing with the curb can be a challenge. In our opinion, the cement curbs are a horrible design. This site’s gravel pad was not level, so we had to use our leveler blocks. Water pressure was good at about 50 psi. There’s no CG Wifi, but we had our Starlink, plus we got a 4 bar Verizon signal. There are 12 sites here with row 1-7 being FHUs with 50/30/20 AMP and the back row 8-12 are 30/20 AMP. The sites are close to each other. We had a large class A in the adjacent site and its slideout came to our large cement picnic table. There’s a small restroom building but no showers. There are 6 RV or Tent sites where you could dry camp. There’s no obvious water spigot, but there are grass watering spigots. We saw reviews about a camp host, but we did not notice one. We departed at 10:50 AM and billeting called wondering if we had departed. If you don't turn in your key by 11:00 AM, you are charged an extra day. We were not unsatisfied with our stay, especially the good service and free laundry. But for a three day stay, due to their check in/out procedures, and site challenges, we’ll pass on this CG in the future.

    Placid Lake State Park Campground

    Beautiful Quiet Campground

This was a wonderful stopover on a road trip. Beautiful lake, rich forest area. Camping spots were nicely spread out, all paved. Ours, number 27 was a pull through. Easy access, a clean spacious vault toilet very close by. Restrooms with showers and flush toilets were a short distance away. THERE ARE NO SEWER HOOKUPS. However at Seeley Lake, about four miles away there is a dump station.

Excellent cell service for Verizon and T-Mobile.

Reserve ahead to be sure, 18$ plus 10$ internet fee. Or walk up first come first served for $18. And with electric hookups!

    Great campground.

    Trixi’s Antler Saloon (Harvest Host)

Great location for 1 night stay through Harvest Hosts

This was a Harvest Host that we booked for 1 night. It is in the gravel parking lot of the saloon. They have two 50/30 amp electrical boxes and one Tesla charger. With HH it’s free (besides spending money at the saloon) or $25 to use the electric.

It’s a very large lot with plenty of room for our 33 foot fifth wheel. The staff was super pleasant and they served good bar food. There were local beers on tap along with ciders and liquor bar. There is a nice, new patio and great 360 review of the surrounding mountains.

At night the road traffic was alittle loud and there was no cell service, though the saloon has Wi-Fi.

Be sure to fill fresh water tanks before stopping there. Couldn’t find a fresh water hose. No dump available.

Great stopover with no other convenient campsites along this route.

The Inn at Philipsburg RV Park

    In town, as advertised

Had a van battery issue so needed to plug in for the cold night. Is as advertised, not for typical bookdockers. Owner is nice and accommodating. Maybe 12 sites with some long term renters - it appeared. All hook ups available up to 50amp. Not quite close enough to down town to walk (in winter). Philipsburg is an awesome small Montana town that’s worth a stop.

    Chief Looking Glass Campground

    Solid Place To Stay

I rolled in mid-afternoon and was able to find a great spot to camp for a couple of days.  The sites were well dispersed and clean with picnic tables and fire pits available.

AT&T phone service was available and at good speeds.  I chose to stay the extra day and was able to work remotely from the campground with my hotspot.

$18/night for out of state travelers with no hookups was a bit steep.

Good site and will be back!

    Charles Waters Campground

    Quiet camping in the Bitterroots.

Nice little campground in the Bitterroot Valley. It seemed that there were as many dogs as people in the campground. Sites varied in size and shape and shade. I like the sites on the far side of the loop as they are closer to the creek and away from the dusty road. Water at the spigots was good, but I was a bit concerned that they were placed so close to the vault toilets. There are some pull through sites as well as back in, but since it’s first come, it’s luck of the draw in what you get. I got there around 2 on a Sunday and had 3 sites to pick from. All of the sites were full by 4pm. There are some nice hiking and horseback riding trails across the road, and there is a forest road that goes all the way to the top of the mountains with picnic tables to watch the sunset or sunrise (when the smoke doesn’t cloud the view).

Bernie & Sharons Riverfront RV Park

    Nice campground

I called 30 minutes before our arrival for a tent camping spot and the host was easily able to accommodate us. Two men met us in a golf cart and drive us to our nice grassy site. The campground had coin showers with hot water and a family friendly rec room.

    Chief Looking Glass Campground

A very nice, small riverside campground

All the forest service campgrounds in the area were full and we happened across this place. We stayed 3 days & it was very peaceful. Each day a few sites opened up mid-day. There is a beautiful flat water river with two access points and locals tube and paddle here. There are tent sites, back-in sites, and pull through sites. Our site was on the river though separated by a thin strip of woods. At night we could hear coyotes. There are a lot of people who drive through looking around and kicking up dust, but that's the only negative. There are no hookups, only a central hand pump for water and no dump station. Prices are cheaper for residents and those with state fishing license (who have already contributed to the up keep).

Guide to Drummond

The Drummond area sits at approximately 4,000 feet elevation in western Montana's Clark Fork River Valley, situated between the Flint Creek and Garnet mountain ranges. Summer temperatures typically reach the 80s during daytime hours while dropping considerably at night, even during peak camping months. Seasonal campground operations generally run from mid-spring through fall, with only select RV parks near Drummond, Montana remaining accessible during winter months.

What to do

River recreation access: Several camping locations near Drummond offer direct access to the Clark Fork River for fishing, floating, and swimming opportunities. Boulder Creek Lodge provides shuttles for river tubing excursions, as noted by a camper: "They made sure we had a shady pull through near our friends staying in a cabin and even provided a shuttle up and down the river so we could tube!"

Ghost town exploration: Visit the historic Garnet Ghost Town, located approximately 30 minutes from Bearmouth RV Park. "Beautiful views here along the Clark Fork River with lots of things to do in the nearby area including visiting the Garnet Ghost town, Philipsburg, Deer Lodge, Anaconda, Butte and Missoula," explains a visitor.

Hot springs soaking: Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is within walking distance of Fairmont RV Resort, offering both indoor and outdoor pools. "Right next to Fairmont Hot Springs. Hot Springs next door and able to get a pass from front desk to get access (still need to pay)," notes one reviewer who appreciated the convenience.

What campers like

Family-friendly amenities: Many campgrounds in the area offer recreational facilities specifically designed for families. A visitor to Boulder Creek Lodge shares: "After we ate, we went down stairs to the game room and played pool, table soccer and checkers for about 4 hours. We went ahead and took showers in the downstairs bathroom/shower house. Huge clean shower stalls."

Clean facilities: Campers frequently comment on well-maintained bathrooms and shower facilities at campgrounds near Drummond. At Fairmont RV Resort, a guest mentions: "Bathrooms very clean. Nice laundry. Right next to Fairmont Hot Springs." Similarly, at Boulder Creek Lodge: "Enjoyed our 3 nights there! Very nice people running it. Quick check in, quiet. Good WiFi, no att cell service. Level campsites. Large shower/bathroom area."

Green spaces for relaxation: Despite the predominantly gravel surfaces at many RV parks, some provide grassy areas for recreation. At Bernie & Sharons Riverfront RV Park, a visitor noted: "It has large spaces and nice walking area. It is nice that the owners have intentionally kept prices down too."

What you should know

Road and rail noise: Many campgrounds in the Drummond area experience occasional noise from nearby transportation routes. A camper at Bearmouth RV Park observed: "Interstate noise and the occasional train whistle would keep me from using the facility for nothing more than an overnight stop."

Cell service reliability: While connectivity varies throughout the region, specific details about service providers can help with planning. At Boulder Creek Lodge, a camper reports: "Good WiFi, no att cell service."

Reservation requirements: Most RV parks near Drummond, Montana have limited sites and fill quickly during peak travel months. According to a reviewer at Indian Creek RV Campground: "On our way to Yellowstone and it was getting late in the day, seen signs for the Old Montana Prison and decided that would be a fun stop. Pulled in and note on office door said to find a site and could either pay in the drop box or in the morning."

Wildlife encounters: The rural setting means potential interactions with local fauna. Boulder Creek Lodge earns praise as "the prettiest little RV park/campground with lovely little cabins alongside a wonderful creek. Something for everyone here and absolutely delightful. The game room and laundry open all night! Dog friendly."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer recreational facilities specifically for children. Bernie & Sharons Riverfront RV Park provides "large grounds, well maintained with green grass for the kid to run in. Walk to the river is about 3-5 min. Spaces were large."

Recreation room availability: Indoor entertainment options can be particularly valuable during inclement weather. One family reports about The Inn at Philipsburg: "Philipsburg is an awesome small Montana town that's worth a stop," providing additional entertainment options beyond the campground.

Affordable pricing policies: Some proprietors specifically maintain lower rates to accommodate families. A visitor to Bernie & Sharons notes: "It is nice that the owners have intentionally kept prices down too," while another mentions: "We were driving an electric car(Tesla) and were told that we could use the 30 amp to recharge it at no extra costs. At less than $40 for a site with 30 amp this was a steal compare to what we paid at other campgrounds."

Tips from RVers

Arrival procedures: Many Drummond area RV parks have specific check-in protocols. At Bernie & Sharons Riverfront RV Park, "We were greeted at the entrance by 2 gentlemen that showed up on golf carts, showed us our way to our site and even guide us when backing to our site."

Site leveling requirements: Terrain conditions affect setup time and equipment needs. Fairmont RV Resort offers "nice level gravel site. Sites are close to each other. There were no picnic tables and wood fires are not allowed so no fire rings."

Electric vehicle charging: For those traveling with electric vehicles, some campgrounds can accommodate charging needs. Bernie & Sharons Riverfront RV Park is "fully equipped for EV travelers with a 14-50 amp outlet, making it super convenient to charge our vehicle while we enjoyed the great outdoors."

Mobile dump service options: Some facilities offer specialized services for extended stays. A camper at Bearmouth RV Park appreciated that "They offer a 'honey pot' mobile dump station where they come pump your sewage, sometimes offering a free dump for stays of a week or longer."
