    Knob Noster State Park Campground

    Cute, Small Quiet

We camped the last weekend in September picking a late reservation where kayaks were available for our first tent test run were our main goals, which the site met. Kayaking was wildly available, due to the small lake and difficult launch, we can see why, but still very enjoyable. Site was very sizable for our tent, as most are suitable for campers. Lots of even ground, with decent distance. Facilities could do with some updates, but there were a number of bathrooms on site, spaced so no site seemed far, including the vault toilet and a lot of people masking up while going into bathrooms as well, which was appreciated. Current host was super nice and helpful to first timers. The tiny market has a number of random items, including a collapsible fork which was the only thing we hadn't overpacked, and wasn't overpriced. Fire pits on our site were adjustable, making grilling food easier to control.

    Beautiful lake views

Stayed on the A loop and had a beautiful view of the lake! Nice to be close to bathrooms and have a gorgeous view. Friendly staff, great price, and campsites have a fire pit with a grill, and a picnic table. We’ll be back!

    Well maintained campground

Well maintained campground with nice, level concrete pads. Sites are spacious. Bath houses (there are at least 2) have 4 unisex shower pods that are clean and have good pressure. There are no sinks or mirrors, just shower and bench. I did not go into bathroom, which was a separate building. The only reason I took off a star is because my site (13) was adjacent to a fenced off sewer lagoon which did emit slight odor. If I came again I would choose another site.

    Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA

    Ok for a stopover

Stayed one night at the KOA in Oak Grove, just east of Kansas City. The sites were all sunny and since it was 100 degrees, it was hot. But the pool was nice and they had a nice dog park which was ok in the evening after it cooled off. Close to KC so we could drive in for BBQ.

    Great Camping

Stayed here for three nights. All spots have plenty of shade when we walked around. Shower house and bathrooms were clean and nice. Lots of things to do such as boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing and swimming. Fire pits were even nice with an attached grill grate.

    Trailside RV Park

    Decent

Good: New management seems friendly and helpful. Laundry facilities acceptable. ($1.25 to wash)
Propane fill on site. Pool and restrooms closed during my stay, appear nice enough.

Bad: Noise. Mostly from the highway, but also trains and air traffic. Situated between two neighborhoods, the highway, and an RV dealership. Did I mention noise? WiFi is laughable.

    Phone/internet service is low average.

Overall, adequate. Nothing too bad (except the noise), and nothing to rave about.

    Great Overnight Campsite

Stayed here for one night after driving down from Nebraska. Great place to set up for the night, clean bathrooms, a nice fire pit, and plenty of room to set up a tarp for the rain. Not too much privacy as there’s not very many trees around and the sites are close together but otherwise a great campground!

    Watkins Mill State Park Campground

    Nicely shaded spots.

We stayed for two days in spot #92. Many of the spots have a good amount of room, but there are some that looked tricky to level. 92 was fine for leveling. The only downside is that the spots, while larger, are fairly open (in the area around 92). I prefer a spot that has a tucked away fire pit and table, but this worked OK for us. Bathhouses were clean and there is a great 3.75 mile paved loop around the lake if you have dogs that enjoy long walks.

    Lake Jacomo - Fleming Park

    Quick Questival Camp

We are camping here while doing the Cotopaxi Questival Adventure Race. It's a very nice setting in a Grove of trees atop a hill. Both electric and primitive sites are available. The bathrooms are the nicest campground bathrooms I've ever used - large, clean, and not communal, so you get a sink, toilet, and shower all to yourself. This campground is in close proximity to the lake, trails, and many other outdoorsy diversions!

Convenient yurt camping: Oak Grove visitors seeking furnished accommodations appreciate the yurt options at several area parks. "Our friends stayed in the cabins which are awesome. The RV sites were right on top of each other so would not great. Very little green space but had a lot of amenities and the cleanest bathrooms!" reports a Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA visitor.

Level, well-maintained sites: Campers frequently mention the quality of campsites at Knob Noster State Park Campground as a significant benefit. "Well maintained campground with nice, level concrete pads. Sites are spacious," notes a recent visitor who appreciated the practical design of the camping area.

What you should know

Seasonal facility limitations: Most campgrounds reduce services during winter months. "The only downside is that some sites are right on the road, so kids can dart out at any time...just be careful!" warns a Lake Jacomo visitor about site placement considerations.

Reservation requirements: During peak season (May-September), securing spots at popular campgrounds requires advance planning. "It is getting to be more common to plan ahead and submit a reservation in state parks as more and more young people are catching on to the camping experience," advises one Knob Noster camper.

Wildlife management concerns: Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA and surrounding areas have active wildlife. "Friendly staff and clean bath/shower facilities. Close proximity to the interstate does come with some traffic noise. Many retail options within a short drive," notes a visitor who appreciated the convenience despite environmental factors.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Smiths Fork Recreation Area Camping offers programs specifically designed for younger campers. "Camp hosts Janet and Chris went above and beyond making Halloween perfect for our family. Been here several times and they are more than accommodating. Always a clean, safe and organized campground."

Safety considerations: Several campgrounds feature gated entrances or regular security patrols. "Decent KOA off the highway in a neighborhood. Sites are close together with some shaded. The free pancake breakfast was great and they had fun kids activities. Nice doggie playground with grass," reports a Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA visitor.

Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: RVers seeking complete services should target specific sites. "We don't stray very far from the KC Metro (50 mile radius). Of everywhere Smith's Fork is the only one (so far) that offers Electric (30 & 50 amp), Water (2) and Sewer at every campsite. At just $30 per day it is a steal!" shares an experienced RVer.

Level site challenges: Weston Bend State Park Campground offers varying site conditions. "Campground is hilly, sites are level, gravel pads. Lots of space between sites. Electric sites, no water, but water spigots were scattered around the campground. Majority of sites had shade," notes a visitor who appreciated the spaciousness despite terrain challenges.

Seasonal road access: Several campgrounds have limited access during winter or after heavy rainfall. "After going around for almost 1.5 hrs from Smithville due to all the road closures, we finally got to the lake but all the campsites were out of commission to include the visitor's center and the roads were closed," warns a camper about potential access issues.
