Busiek Conservation Area provides primitive equestrian camping opportunities within 10 miles of Crane, Missouri. The conservation area features a network of horse riding trails that wind through wooded hills and cross several streams. While the camping facilities are basic with no water hookups or electric available, sites can accommodate both tent camping and small RVs with horse trailers. Fires are permitted at designated campsites, and picnic tables are available. The area maintains separate trails for horses, hikers, and a shooting range, minimizing conflict between different recreational users. Multiple reviews highlight the exceptional scenery throughout the trail system, noting breathtaking landscapes that make this location popular despite its rustic amenities.

The horse trails at Busiek connect to a comprehensive system that offers varying difficulty levels, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced riders. Sections of the trails follow alongside a small river, providing water access for horses during rides. The area requires no reservations for camping, though permits may be needed for group equestrian gatherings. Most campsites provide sufficient space for parking trucks with horse trailers, though the terrain can be challenging during wet weather conditions. No designated horse corrals exist on site, so equestrians should bring portable corral panels or highline equipment. Proper manure management is expected, with all waste packed out upon departure. The conservation area remains open year-round, though trail conditions vary seasonally, with spring and fall offering the most comfortable riding temperatures and best trail conditions.

This a primitive horse camp that is not far off the highway.  It is far enough that it is or  can be quiet.  It is also great for star gazing, hiking, mountain biking and trail rides.  Swan Creek runs along side the camp so you will need to be aware of possible flash floods if you are camped right next to the creek.  There are picnic table, fire ring and a pit toilet.  NO WATER

      Peaceful sleeping

Driving through Missouri needed a quiet place to stay. We stayed at Honey Berry Hideout, it has metal fire ring and grill. The owners were very friendly , informed us amenities , they have coffee pot , small stove to use in a barn in walking distance, bathrooms and showers for small fees. Family friendly with large area for kids to play.

      Secluded rustic mini-resort

Brendan and Teresa are an adotable young couple who are transforming a large area in the midst of Missouri farm country into a small black- and blueberry farm that includes a small RV camp. They also make and sell natural products (soaps, balms, etc.). They have constructed a cute rec house with darts, corn hole, even a little reading nook. There is a swing on the big tree in front of the rec house as well as horseshoe pits. Dispersed around the berry fields are hidden firepit areas for guests to enjoy. And you can pick berries for your breakfast!

They have built an exquisite shower room with cedar walls and river rock flooring, and there are bathrooms for guests as well.

Brendan and Teresa could not have been more accommodating. They presented us with a goody bag with s'mores fixings and a sample lip balm from their product line. And Brendan helped us with hose repair parts when our water hose jammed on the reel and we had to cut it off! First rate customer service.

The drawback for us is that (1) it is FAR from the main highway so not convenient for one-night stays and (2) the one site suitable for large RVs is not very level. We have a 40' Renegade Verona and it took 6 tries to find a place near the hookups where our auto-level would find a good position (no "excessive slope" error).

Also, we knew from the start there was only 30 amp service and no sewer, so we can't complain about that.

But for smaller RVs and boondockers, this is a charming getaway for families and anyone who enjoys getting away from it all.

      Big M

      Camping heaven

Big M Marina and campground is absolutely awesome! Nestled snug on the Missouri Arkansas border is a gem of a campground. Large grassy sites some most with electricity and water, and some with sewer. Sites are paved and pretty level. Great play area for kids. Well kept bathrooms and showers. Marina has a great restaurant that you will not be leaving hungry. Nice marina store. Boat rentals as well as slips. The swim area was very clean and accessible even though it was flooded. Only inconvenience were the roads in. Be prewar warned. It is a nail biter. All in all definitely a 9 out of 10!

      Bar K Wrangler Camp

      A good waypoint.

No amenities other than composting toilets. There are a few tent sites along the road and there is plenty of grassy area near the creek for RVs/trailers. This is a horse camp with plenty of evidence, but it was only us and a couple of other tent campers.

The creek was obviously spring fed, crystal clear and had a gravelly bottom. There were plenty of places to get in the water...understanding that this is horse camp.

The place was well maintained and mowed and it was super peaceful and quiet. The main annoyance was some trash in fire pits along the creek.

If you consider this as a waypoint, two things:

      1. There is about a mile of dusty, gravel road that is a little rough.

      2. We had great T-Mobile 10 miles south, but it dropped to zero by the time we drove into camp.

      Roaring River State Park Campground

      Fantastic family spot!

This campground offers a lot of options. Including trout fishing, hiking, and swimming. Located in South Missouri it is an easy day trip into Branson Missouri or Eureka Springs Arkansas. Very well located and very well run by the state. They offer a pretty well equipped camp store along with the lodge and restaurant. This state park is gorgeous and one of my favorite places to go. They also have a nature center and trout hatchery. Park is open year round, trout tags must be purchased at the camp Store. All campgrounds have nice bathrooms and showers. Just a heads up though if you are looking for a quiet relaxing weekend make sure you avoid kids free fishing weekend! It’s a ZOO that weekend!

    Guide to Crane

Dispersed camping options near Crane, Missouri offer equestrian and outdoor recreation opportunities in the Ozarks region at elevations ranging from 1,100 to 1,400 feet. The area's limestone and dolomite terrain creates varied camping conditions, with several conservation areas and state parks providing trail access within a 30-mile radius. Weather patterns bring humid summers with temperatures averaging 85°F and mild spring and fall seasons ideal for outdoor activities.

    What to do

Trail riding access points: Swan Creek provides numerous dispersed camping locations along the creek where equestrians can set up before accessing trails. "Has great dispersed camping, free, creek is accessible, has equestrian area to camp with horses, bout 45 minutes to a hour from Springfield. No service for ATT," notes camper David L.

Target practice: While exploring horse campgrounds near Crane, Missouri, consider Busiek which offers a shooting range separate from camping areas. Camper Dany H. confirms it's a "Decent place to shoot and walk the pupps," making it versatile for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy both activities.

Swimming holes: During summer months, seek out creek access points for cooling off. Josh S. mentions about Busiek: "The trails and the river make for some great scenery. Be wary of the water level, this can impact any hiking you might be looking to do, so be ready."

Mountain biking trails: Several conservation areas near Crane feature multi-use trails suitable for mountain biking. These trails typically range from beginner to intermediate difficulty and connect with equestrian paths at designated intersections.

    What campers like

Creek access: The clear water at Bar K Wrangler Camp attracts campers seeking natural swimming areas. Patricia S. describes, "The creek was obviously spring fed, crystal clear and had a gravelly bottom. There were plenty of places to get in the water...understanding that this is horse camp."

Privacy between sites: Many visitors appreciate the spaciousness at equestrian camping areas. Brandon D. notes about Bar K Wrangler Camp: "This place is great! When we arrived a few people were sitting in the creek so we moved further up stream and found a nice site with easy creek access. We were likely the only group for at least 2 square miles."

Low-cost camping options: Free camping areas are available at several horse-friendly sites. Miranda M. comments that Bar K "is a horse camp, but there is plenty of space to just pitch a tent if needed. Free site with a beautiful backdrop."

Dark skies for stargazing: The minimal light pollution at conservation areas creates excellent stargazing opportunities. One reviewer mentions these horse-friendly campgrounds are "great for star gazing, hiking, mountain biking and trail rides."

    What you should know

Permit requirements: Some conservation areas require advance permits for camping. Anthony S. advises about B Berry Farms & Co.: "Camping is by permit only, and permits can not be obtained online or by phone, you have to go in person to the Missouri department of conservation office."

Limited cell coverage: Prepare for minimal communication options at horse campgrounds near Crane, Missouri. Patricia S. warns about Bar K Wrangler Camp: "We had great T-Mobile 10 miles south, but it dropped to zero by the time we drove into camp."

Water sources: Most dispersed camping areas lack potable water. Pack in sufficient water or bring filtration systems for creek water. Conservation areas typically require campers to be self-sufficient with water supplies.

Road conditions: Access roads can be challenging, particularly after rain. "There is about a mile of dusty, gravel road that is a little rough," notes Patricia S. about reaching Bar K Wrangler Camp.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly swimming: Roaring River State Park Campground offers supervised water access ideal for families. Sandi C. explains, "There are few deep swimming holes in the park although their are plenty of area's to wade and catch crawdads."

Educational opportunities: The fish hatchery at Roaring River provides learning experiences for children. Wendy M. describes, "You can walk the holding tanks and feed the trout from baby to ready to be released into the river. There is also a cave you can walk in where you'll find a pool of water that goes for miles underground."

Campground selection for families: Choose campgrounds with designated family areas and amenities. Jennifer O. recommends Roaring River: "We spent a weekend in early May in campground 1 backing right up to one of the creeks. The sound of running water alone would have me back. Electric only and not very level site but loved it! Lots to do and see at the hatchery and play in the river."

Activity planning: Arrange outdoor activities during cooler morning or evening hours during summer months to avoid peak heat and humidity, particularly when camping with children.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Big M campsites may require extra equipment for leveling. Hayley G. cautions, "Our campsite had a lot of privacy on 3 sides and had a small creek running through a ways behind it, downhill. There really wasn't a good level spot for our tent due to where the firepit was placed so we had to sleep on an incline. And the drive for the spot was at a pretty decent incline so a camper would definitely need to be leveled."

Navigating narrow access roads: Large rigs should approach some horse campgrounds with caution. Cathy S. warns about Big M: "It's a little tricky getting there. Lot of curves and turns. A real nail biter!"

Weather considerations: Winter camping requires careful planning due to road conditions. One reviewer advises checking weather forecasts as "you can not get up those snowy hills, curves not even on a 4wd" during winter storms.

Hookup availability: Most equestrian campsites offer limited or no hookups. Jeremy C. notes about Big M: "Pads are generally good and pretty level. Sites are spaced out nicely. There is a marina here with a restaurant that is open during the season."
