Best Tent Camping near Carthage, MS

Tent camping options near Carthage, Mississippi include several primitive setups across the region. Shockaloe Base Camp I Camping in the Bienville National Forest offers tent-only sites about 25 miles southeast of Carthage, operating from April to October. The Kosciusko Bicycle Only Camp along the Natchez Trace Parkway provides tent sites for cyclists approximately 20 miles northwest of Carthage.

Most tent sites in the area offer minimal amenities and require campers to be self-sufficient. Shockaloe Base Camp I features picnic tables and allows campfires, but lacks drinking water, toilets, and trash services. Campers must pack in all necessary supplies and pack out all waste. The terrain typically consists of natural forest floor with limited site preparation. According to one visitor at Shockaloe, "The ride out is a little rough. Pack in pack out." Most locations permit pets, though the bicycle camp at Kosciusko is more restrictive with its policies.

The tent camping experience in this region offers considerable privacy and natural immersion. Shockaloe Base Camp provides secluded forest sites where campers can enjoy relative solitude. A review mentioned that visitors "had a wonderful time here with absolutely no one else" and noted that the national forest "offers the privacy and seclusion one wants." Golden Memorial State Park, previously a camping option, has been converted to day-use only, according to recent visitor reports. The surrounding Bienville National Forest provides additional dispersed camping possibilities for those seeking a more primitive tent camping experience. Most tent sites in the region serve as good bases for exploring the forest trails and natural areas, though limited facilities mean campers should be prepared for self-contained camping with appropriate water storage and waste management solutions.

    Gin Creek

    Tent camping

Basic tent camping not far from water on Lake Okatibbee in Lauderdale Co, MS. This place is no reservations, first come first served. There are no showers but there is a pit toilet. The grounds are kept up pretty good there is a picnic grill and a fire ring. It is only 10$ and uses the honor system.

Jeff Busby Campground, Milepost 193.1 — Natchez Trace Parkway

    FREE but....

This Natchez Trace Parkway free campground offers oddly placed paved parking areas, grills, tall fire rings, and picnic tables (most appeared in disrepair). Bathrooms were clean however older and not heated...and no hot water or soap. The parking is pull through but not clearly defined. Grills and tables were randomly placed. The park is rolling hills and drop offs at the curb side of some sites. No electric or water hook ups but there is a single outside faucet at the bathroom for potable water. Large shade trees made for minimal solar power. Honestly I had an eery unsure feeling during my 2 night stay. It appeared like mostly men were staying there and was just an odd placement of sites in general. I suppose it was the undefined site borders. I stayed in a pull through that was the nearest to the restroom. Had I not watched a YouTube video by 2tiredteachers when researching my trip, I would have been very confused on where the site were to even park at. But the highlight was Little Mountain!!

A well kept free dispersed campground

This is a very nice clean in every way dispersed campground. Offers bathrooms that are clean with running water and flush toilets. Picnic tables, lantern hooks, fire rings, grills trash pick up and paved pads to park your rig on paved roads into and through the park. This is a 14 day stay and very quiet and private campsites.

    Choctaw Lake

    Not for Tent Camping

Pros: Very nice campground. Clean bath houses with showers, beautiful lake with a small beach. Access to mountain bike trails. Verizon cell reception for those going completely out of touch.

No's: Campsites are on top of each other with very little tree cover. Also, tents cannot be set up on grass; only on their "tent pads." (jagged rocks). I asked the camp host if any sites had actual tent pads instead of rocks and was told no.

    Okatibbee Lake Waterpark

    RV park

RV campgrounds on Lake Okatibbee in Lauderdale County, MS. The pads are asphalt and have electric, water, and sewer connections. They also have picnic table in good shape and a steel picnic grill. This is not a fancy park, but it is decent. It has a bath house- restroom and showers. It also has washer and dryers. The bath house is in pretty good shape- they keep it fairly clean. The staff is very nice. Most of the pads are in the woods with a few pads overlooking the water- none are on the water. We tent camp, but there are no primitive sites here. There are a few cabins that are closer to the water. This is a place we will come back and stay.

    Free primitive camping

This is as simple and as it gets, but it does have restrooms. This is primitive camping so there are no hookups and nothing extras, just a nice place to pitch a tent or park. You can not reserve this site but it’s free. There are a few other similar primitive campsites in the park nearby. Nice and wooded.

Yay: simple camping! Very pretty wooded area. Lots of hiking trails nearby.

Nay: no map or info of any sort once you’re there.

    Surprise: exceptional in fall!

    Roosevelt State Park Campground

    Made the best of it

I booked a site that we did not know anything about. This was the first time we stayed in the newer loop. We had tent camped in the older section about 5 year’s ago and had a wonderful time. When we arrived on Thursday evening to our site I didn’t know if it was going to be wide enough to let the steps down without fall into the 6 ft ditch. After some measuring of the slide outs and maneuvering over 6 inches from the electrical pole. We set up camp. I had to dig up the sewer tap that was running up hill. We made the best of it by setting everything up in front of the camper. The picnic table and fire pit was on the opposite side of the camper up hill with about 8 inches of pine needles going up. Not practical. So we didn’t use that area. Most of the sites were the same way with the picnic area on the opposite side of camper. The lake area was nice, did some fishing out of the canoe and kayaking when there wasn’t 30 boats out. Lake was closed for swimming. Overall we made the best of it. We will definitely not be staying at site 45 again. Staff was friendly and there were park rangers riding by all the time. There are definitely better sites, not all.

    Choctaw Lake

Great spots by the water, although quite humid on hotter days, camp neighbors are welcoming and the camp host is a charm

Stayed a night and the next day up until two o’clock, (you’re required to check out &pack up before 2pm on leave day) the stay was great, campsite occupants were nice and even gave me and my lady fire starters when we forgot fluid for our coals when we planned on grilling LOL.. we stayed on site 8, it was a nice spot by the back end lake and its quite nice during the day. Nighttime can be quite humid and bug ridden but if you’re equipped for it i’d say this spot is great for beginners or family trips. Fishing is quite slow/inactive unless you’re on a boat, rather over fished.

Guide to Carthage

Tent campsites near Carthage, Mississippi offer primitive experiences within the dense pine forests of central Mississippi. The region sits at approximately 400 feet elevation with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Camping in this area requires self-sufficiency due to limited facilities and services in these remote woodland settings.

What to do

Forest exploration: Bienville National Forest surrounds many tent camping areas near Carthage and provides extensive hiking opportunities through pine-dominated woodlands. The forest encompasses over 178,000 acres of public land with numerous unmarked trails.

Water activities: Shockaloe Base Camp I Camping serves as an access point for local streams and small waterways. Located about 25 miles southeast of Carthage, this campground offers access to fishing spots within the national forest. As one camper noted, it's "nestled in the Bienville National Forrest with lots of other options to camp."

Cultural heritage: Kosciusko Bicycle Only Camp provides a convenient tent site for cyclists traveling the historic Natchez Trace Parkway. The camp is located approximately 20 miles northwest of Carthage and allows cyclists to explore the 444-mile historic route connecting Natchez to Nashville.

What campers like

Natural isolation: The tent camping locations around Carthage, Mississippi provide genuine seclusion. Campers at Shockaloe Base Camp I often report having entire camping areas to themselves during weekdays and non-peak seasons.

Minimal development: Cove's Nest Marina and other primitive sites maintain a natural setting without excessive infrastructure. The limited development keeps these areas true to their forest character with natural ground cover and minimal site preparation.

Affordable options: Most dispersed camping areas near Carthage require no reservation fees. Camping is typically free or low-cost throughout Bienville National Forest, with designated areas requiring only self-registration at trailheads or entry points.

What you should know

Access challenges: Many tent campsites near Carthage require traveling on unpaved forest roads. A visitor to Shockaloe Base Camp noted, "The ride out is a little ruff. Pack in pack out."

Wildlife awareness: Black bears are present though uncommon in the Bienville National Forest. Proper food storage is essential, with items secured in vehicles or hung from trees at night.

Limited connectivity: Cell service is inconsistent throughout the camping areas surrounding Carthage. Most forest camping locations have no reliable signal, requiring campers to plan communications and navigation accordingly.

Water availability: Potable water is not provided at most primitive campsites near Carthage. Campers must bring all necessary drinking water or purification equipment to treat water from natural sources.

Tips for camping with families

Best beginner option: The more developed areas of Bienville National Forest provide easier camping experiences for families new to primitive camping. Sites closer to forest roads offer quicker exit options if weather turns unfavorable.

Safety precautions: Families should bring a complete first aid kit and know the location of the nearest medical facilities. The closest hospital to most Carthage camping areas is approximately 25-30 minutes away by car.

Wildlife education opportunities: The forest setting provides excellent opportunities to teach children about local ecosystems. Camping areas offer chances to observe woodland birds, small mammals, and native plant species in their natural habitat.

Tips from RVers

Alternative options: Traditional RV camping is limited near Carthage. Most tent sites in the national forest are not suitable for larger vehicles or trailers due to narrow access roads and unimproved conditions.

Tent platform construction: Some campers at primitive sites bring materials to create temporary platforms for tents, especially during rainy seasons when forest floor dampness can be problematic.

Generator restrictions: Most dispersed camping areas near Carthage prohibit generator use to maintain the natural quiet. RVers who typically rely on power must plan accordingly with solar options or sufficient battery capacity.
