    Lake Elmo County Park Reserve

    Great for the kiddos

For a County Park, Lake Elmo has an impressive list of amenities. Before we even get to the campsite let's mention the filtered swimming pond. This man made pond is a sandy bottom and surrounded by a nice sand beach. Large built in umbrellas are available for sun coverage and there is a concession stand and bathrooms with showers. And yes, as I mentioned the water is filtered! No gross goose poop or green algae to deal with! Next to the swim pond is a giant playground with fun for the big and little kids. Other amenities include archery, horse trails, paved and grass trails, camper spots, rustic spots and hike in camping spots. In winter the xc ski trails are lit for evening skiing. Or let's be honest early afternoon. It is Minnesota and the suns down by 4 In the Winter! They also have a newer Nordic center that's open all year round and includes a locker room with showers. The hike in camp spot we chose was on a small lake so it had a nice breeze and made it easy to bring a kayak or paddleboard and hop right in. There is also a boat launch for your larger toys! The trails in the park are quite impressive for its size. We enjoyed a 5 mile loop off the Nordic center and right past the camp spot. A picnic table and fire pit as well as nice flat tent pad were provided. If you're coming in from out of town then you're just a 5 minute drive from Woodbury and all the amenities you'd ever need but the park feels miles away from it all.

    Chester Woods Park

    Great weekend spot!

Chester Woods is a county park just east of Rochester, MN. It has a campground and man-made lake (created when Bear Creek was dammed for a flood control project) with hiking trails, a horse trail, picnic shelters, a beach, and a playground. The campsites have nice, soft ground for tents, and electrical outlets are available. It can get noisy on the weekend, but the sites are nice along the edge of the campground.

The lake offers the opportunity to fish for panfish, catfish, and bass. There are a lot of submerged trees from before the Creek was dammed that provide good habitat in deep water, and there is also good shoreline structure and weed beds. There is a fish cleaning house next to the campground which has electric lighting, but no running water.

    Our favorite campground

We have been going to Haycreek for over 15 years for horse camping. The trails are shaded, no bugs, friendly campers and staff. They have electric and water hookups for horse campers, and they have overflow for horse campers. The trails here are amazing.

    Cannon River Wilderness Area

Perfect place Found a great site

For free the area is awesome right by the river. We found a site tucked away from people which is what we like. We set up hammocks right next to the river. The hike from parking is not bad at all about a 10 minute walk from parking to the farthest site.

    High Island Creek Park

    Quiet, clean and well maintained.

Nice clean campground very well maintained and free. Near Henderson, MN which is one of a kind small town well worth the visit for all. This is rustic with no hookups except very clean portapotty and hand lever water jack. Pick where to park in nice large grassy areas. A few areas are next to wild and deep ravines. Very nice large new play areas with slides for kids. Popular with a few horse trailers and riders on weekends because of COVID get to gather worries elsewhere. Friday morning before week end is best to get there in case of horse trailers to get nicer spot. Sometimes only a few campers are there. Call ahead to stay overnight so sheriff is aware. Not a lot of people know about it and is at end of long gravel road for peace and quiet. No problem for 5th wheels and tents both, pick your spot. Want to relax, chill out and visit your neighbors. This is worth the visit.

    Lake Elmo County Park Reserve

    Modern Campground with Room

Lake Elmo County Park in Washington County Minnesota is a great park for families. There are a bunch of things to do including hiking, horseback riding, swimming in their filtered pond, boating and an insane playground. Our modern site 40 was in a great open location with a shaded edge. We had plenty of room to play, park the camper or set up tents. I can imagine in the heat of summer the lack of shade trees may be a hindrance to avoiding the noon day sun but there's always the amazing filtered swimming pond to go cool off in. Directly behind the site was a hiking trail that led us through woods, fields and prairie. The water source was just a couple campsites down but the bathrooms were a little farther so when coming with just tents you may want to search for a closer campsite. Overall clean and open.

    High Island Creek Park

    Nice spot

Gulley that a large creek runs through surrounded by trees and large forested hills. The entire park is surrounded by farms, nearby are some really nice Minnesota small towns like Henderson and the somewhat larger St. Peter (but still small town). I hiked in about 1/2 a mile and camped in the trees but they also have some clearings closer to the entrance, with grills, where you could easily set up. $10 suggested donation. Trash bins located all over which is good , but the wind seems to blow debris around here and there, and irresponsible people leave their beer cans/water bottles strewn about, so pick them up if you find them like I did. Website and signage on location recommends to call the sheriff's office to let them know you're camping there which I did and they were nice enough, but it's probably not the end of the world if you don't. Overall this was a pleasant spot, especially being the only camper there, so hope you all enjoy! Places like this are what I love about The Dyrt, I don't think I would have found this otherwise.

What to do

Biking adventures: The Sakatah Lake State Park Campground connects directly to the Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail that runs between Mankato and Faribault. "We stayed here while visiting Minneopa state park. The campground was nice. It was mid April so no water at the sites but had electric in ours. Had great trails to walk and bike on," notes Tracy O. about Sakatah Lake State Park Campground.

Wildlife observation: Chester Woods Park offers multiple opportunities for wildlife spotting along its trails and lake shoreline. "I was so amazed with all the sounds of birds in this park. I heard Everything from Eagles, Canadian Geese and Swans to Woodpeckers and multiple song birds. I wish I could distinguish between them. Also the frogs and toads were adding their voices too," writes Shelly S. about Chester Woods Park.

Creek exploration: The ravines at High Island Creek Park provide unique hiking opportunities with varying elevation changes. "Beautiful trails leading you down the revenue to a gentle flowing creek. One of me and my hubbies favorite drop in campsites!!" shares Alison O. The site features numerous trails that descend into the creek valley, making it ideal for day hikes from your campsite.

What campers like

Private camping spots: Many campers appreciate the secluded sites available at Sakatah Lake. "It was perfect. There wasn't a lot of people there. The lots are pretty nice and secluded," reports Thomas D. The campground offers sites set back from the main areas, providing privacy even during busier summer weekends.

Clean facilities: Lake Elmo County Park Reserve consistently receives praise for its well-maintained amenities. "Top of the line campground. Surprisingly well spaced sites, facilities modern and clean. Trees galore. Clearly the locals use this park a lot," mentions MalibuDave42 L. The park features spacious sites with electrical hookups and modern amenities.

No-cost options: Free camping at High Island Creek Park provides budget-friendly opportunities within driving distance of Nerstrand. "Nice clean campground very well maintained and free. Near Henderson, MN which is one of a kind small town well worth the visit for all," explains Mike G. The park operates on a donation basis and requires notifying the sheriff's office of your stay.

What you should know

Water conditions: Lake quality varies significantly across campgrounds in this region. "Sakatah Lake is quite shallow so late season is at risk of algae bloom - the lake was pea soup green when we got there at the end of August, so go early in the season if you want to get on the water," advises Emma G. Similar conditions exist at other lakes in the area during late summer.

Equestrian accommodations: Horse campgrounds near Nerstrand, Minnesota include specialized facilities at Haycreek Valley Campground with dedicated trail access. "We have been going to Haycreek for over 15 years for horse camping. The trails are shaded, no bugs, friendly campers and staff. They have electric and water hookups for horse campers, and they have overflow for horse campers," shares Olivia R.

Site selection considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging site configurations. "Our site was a perfect tent-in site(site 15), as it was far enough away from the highway and other sites, so noise was minimal. The bugs were actually tolerable, which was an added bonus," notes Matt C. about Lake Elmo County Park Reserve. Research specific site numbers when making reservations.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Kamp Dels offers multiple water recreation options for children. "This is such a great campground for families! So many activities including a water recreation area, petting zoo, shuffleboard, mini golf, pool, toddler water park, multiple playgrounds, basketball and more," recommends Tami W. about Kamp Dels.

Hiking with kids: Chester Woods Park features trails suitable for various ability levels. "Nice park for everyone's type from tents, cabins and all size RV's. Clean bathrooms and showers. Best value I've seen for fire wood. Has many walking trails that you can take your dog on and just a couple that you can't," shares Mark N. The park combines accessible paths with more challenging routes.

Budget-friendly activities: Cannon River Wilderness Area provides basic camping with excellent nature exploration opportunities. "For free the area is awesome right by the river. We found a site tucked away from people which is what we like. We set up hammocks right next to the river. The hike from parking is not bad at all about a 10 minute walk from parking to the farthest site," notes Nick G.

Tips from RVers

Site accessibility: Many campgrounds near Nerstrand have limitations for larger RVs. "Very nice park if your RV is not to big. I put our 38 foot 5th wheel in a site but you better be on your game here. Lots of shade and big trees," cautions Tim B. regarding Sakatah Lake State Park. Most equestrian campgrounds near Nerstrand accommodate RVs up to 30 feet without difficulty.

Hookup variations: Expect different hookup configurations across campgrounds in the region. "Nice place but it is a campground not an rv park, 30 & 50 amp service but no water hookup (fill when you come in) and dump tanks when leaving," explains Kevin about Chester Woods Park. Most campgrounds offer electric hookups but limited water and sewer connections at individual sites.

Seasonal considerations: Weather affects RV camping experiences significantly in this area. "We stayed the last night of their camping season and were able to utilize water and electric hookups," notes Robert B. about Lake Elmo County Park Reserve. Many campgrounds winterize water systems by mid-October, limiting services for late-season campers.
