    Oscoda-Tawas KOA

    Great Campground

My wife and I stayed at the Oscoda/Tawas KOA for 7 nights in the first part of Sept 2021 at RV site # 10.  The site was level and adequately spacious.  The campground has a fabulous rec room for kids, although we had none with us, and an outside playground with a jungle gym and other amenities.  There are also cabins that we did not see inside but that appear to be well appointed.  The park staff are friendly and were very helpful at check in time and in giving us information about long term stays.  They also provide accommodation for storing RVs for those who book for the season.

    Tawas Point State Park Campground

    Beautiful State Park

The park is very clean. Some sites are small, some are larger. Have visited many times. Fun interpretive programs for adults and kids. Beautiful beach to spend the day on. Located close to town. Lots of areas to walk as well. Not pet friendly though, they are allowed at the sites, but not on the beach.

    Tawas Point State Park Campground

    Great park with a lighthouse

East Tawas is a place I've visited most of my adult life. There's some walking trails here, the lighthouse is a close walk/bike from anywhere in the park. Getting to town is a few minute drive, or a very long bike ride on the road.

Like most Michigan State Parks, your site has electric (30/50) only. Water spigots are located in various spots throughout the park. I advise you fill your freshwater tank at home, or when you arrive, at the dump station.

There's a few ADA sites with concrete pads, all others are grass. Comfort stations are in good shape.

Beaches are, like most in Michigan, eroded due to high water levels, but still useable.

You can watch sunrise on the Lake Huron side, sunsets over Tawas Bay.

I've never really interacted with staff here, but never needed to. Park is clean. There can be lineups at the dump station.

A few sites are pull thru. Most back-in.

If you have a vehicle, there's many places to see in the area, like Lumberman's Monument. Tawas has a nice farmers market, worth a visit for fresh veg and other items.

    Hartwick Pines State Park Campground

    Beautiful pines

Large wooded campground with nice sized sites, picnic table, fire ring, electric hook up, flush toilets, and year round activities. There are lots of trails for biking and hiking, a day use/ mucc logging museum that's kinda throughout this one area of woods. Beautiful new and old growth, a couple of nearby lakes, it was beautiful.

    Herrick Recreation Area

    Rustic but fun

Rustic feel as all sites are electric but no water hook up. There are spigots in the center as well as a dump station and potable water fill. My family has camped here for years as it is close to home. They sell fire wood and the bath houses are cleaned multiple times as day and the showers are usually pretty warm as well. Great place to camp as a group. A few different play grounds and a full beach across the road.

    Oscoda-Tawas KOA

    Very nice campground!

Very nice campground off the beaten path. Oscoda is on the East side of Michigan off Lake Huron. Northern lower pennisula. This campground is a good base camp for the area.

We had site 53, which is a 30 amp back in site. These sites are by the marsh. Unfortunately, we had no clear view of the marsh due to summer foliage. Bugs were buggy, but it's summer. There's a train track by the campground, but we only heard it at night two times. It didn't run on the weekend. The campground was full over the weekend, but everyone was very polite & quiet hours were enforced. Bathrooms & showers were great. Very clean. They have a small pool, playground for the kids. The jumping pillow was down- covid precautions. If we're in the area, we'll stay again. We camped at Oscoda/ Tawas KOA Holiday in a Travel Trailer.

    The Lost Oak's Campground

    Awesome Wooded Campground!

We stayed here over Labor Day Weekend 2021 and had a great time. The electric sites are all large campsites that are very long with lots of options on how you want to setup. Awesome wood pricing that's delivered directly to the campsite. Lots of walking trails and the campground was dog friendly. Extremely friendly owners who keep the campground and it's facilities very very clean. The outdoor showers were great! Great water pressure and HOT water! There's a little Fresh Produce stand across the street, easy walking distance for some great veggies, eggs, and baked goods. Can't wait to come back and see what the new owners have added after the season!

Great Cell Coverage on AT&T (80mbps+ down); decent coverage on Sprint/TMobile and Verizon.

    Shupac Lake State Forest Campground

    Lakeside sites, busy campground

Typical state forest campground with picnic tables and fire ring, pit toilet, water hand pump. All sites are along the lake, most (all?) are on a small bluff above the lake with stairs or trail down to the shore. Arrived on a Saturday in July to find 75% full, but was able to get in. Pretty quiet for as busy as it was, woke up to the call of loons. 1 or 2 bars of Verizon with a booster.

Guide to West Branch

Campgrounds near West Branch, Michigan range from rustic sites in the Huron National Forest to full-service RV parks with seasonal amenities. The region's varied terrain includes pine forests, riverside locations, and proximity to lake recreation areas, with most campsites situated between 800-1,100 feet in elevation. Winter camping options remain limited to a few year-round facilities, though Northern Bear Paw RV Park maintains operations through the snow season.

What to do

Kayaking on local waterways: Camp Withii in Harrison provides convenient access to water recreation. "I have been here for over 2 weeks now and I am absolutely loving it! The Camp Hosts are delightful and helpful. It's a quiet and peaceful setting," reports Donna M., who stayed at Harrison RV Family Campground.

Trail riding in Huron National Forest: The area offers extensive trail systems for various vehicles. "The whole place is incredibly accommodating. There is an array of sites available plus RV's and Cabins for rent so winter camping here is a blast. The area is a trail riders Mecca. From horseback riding to ATVs," notes Judy B. about her experience at Luzerne Express Campground & RV.

Swimming and fishing: Several campgrounds maintain private lakes and ponds. "7 acre swimming and fishing pond. River borders the campground. Rentals of boats, paddle boards, fishing boats, paddle boats and banana bikes," explains Levi D. about amenities at River Valley RV Park.

What campers like

Pine tree settings: Campsites with natural shade and privacy are highly rated. "This place is gorgeous. Owners have done a great job with the property. Pine trees left intact. It sits on the Au Gres River trail to the river with seating, picnic table and fire pit," writes Nellie about Northern Bear Paw RV Park.

Waterfront access: Riverside and lakeside sites prove popular with kayakers and anglers. "The Lakeview Campground is a great spot for water lovers, or anyone looking to enjoy the campground's updated amenities," notes Jake C. after visiting Secord Lake Campground.

Wooded seclusion: Campers appreciate natural settings with minimal traffic noise. "Nice quiet secluded campground in the woods. Nice clean baths and showers. $25 for tent $35 RVs pull threw," reports Gary D. about Ogemaw County Park West Branch RV Park.

What you should know

Shower facilities vary significantly: Some campgrounds charge for showers while others include them. "The showers cost $2 (in quarters) for 6 minutes of lukewarm water," notes Geo D. from his experience at Luzerne Express Campground & RV.

Off-season closures: Most rv parks near West Branch, Michigan close between mid-October and early April. Northern Bear Paw remains one of the few year-round options, offering winter camping when most facilities have closed for the season.

Site spacing considerations: Some campgrounds pack sites closer than others. "We have camped here a couple of times now. Gloria and Larry are awesome and we will be seasonal again," comments Lewis M. about his experience at Outdoor Adventures Mount Pleasant Resort.

Tips for camping with families

Activity-centered campgrounds: Look for campgrounds with built-in entertainment options. "This campground is the best one in their fleet. It is super dog friendly as well. This is our 'go to' spot for sure. Love it here and the staff are great," shares Cindy C. about Outdoor Adventures Mount Pleasant Resort.

Tent site selection: Request sites away from RV generators and ATV trails for quieter family camping. Several campgrounds offer segregated tent areas that provide better sleep conditions, especially with younger children.

Rental options: Several campgrounds offer cabin rentals as alternatives to tent camping during unpredictable weather periods. "Traveling in from Indiana, the country side relaxes your big city anxieties while calming the busy lifestyle in your rear view mirror," notes Colin L., who appreciated the relaxing atmosphere at Northern Bear Paw RV Park.

Tips from RVers

Big rig access routes: Some campgrounds have narrow access roads that challenge larger motorhomes. Most West Branch area RV parks can accommodate standard-sized travel trailers, but 40-foot-plus rigs should call ahead to confirm turn radius adequacy.

Seasonal site availability: Many regular campers secure seasonal sites early. "Needed a tent sight for 3 pup tents motorcycle camping. Nice quiet secluded campground in the woods," explains Gary D., highlighting the diverse site options at Ogemaw County Park West Branch RV Park.

Shore power considerations: Verify amperage availability before booking. While 30-amp service remains common, 50-amp connections have limited availability at some parks during peak season, particularly for last-minute arrivals without reservations.
