Best Tent Camping near Clyde, MI

Public lands surrounding Clyde, Michigan offer several tent camping options for outdoor enthusiasts. P.L. Graham Park & Campground, formerly known as Chicagami Boy Scout Camp, provides rustic tent-only camping along the Black River with 12 designated sites. Located about 30 miles northeast of Clyde, this first-come, first-served campground features walk-in tent sites with basic amenities. Port Huron KOA in Kimball offers tent campsites with more developed facilities, operating from April 25 to October 26. Camp Agawam provides tent camping opportunities in a park setting with recreational activities nearby.

Most tent campgrounds in the region feature dirt or gravel pads with varying levels of shade. P.L. Graham Park requires campers to park in a designated lot and walk to their sites, though temporary vehicle access is permitted for unloading gear. Fire pits are available at most locations, typically simple rings surrounded by rocks rather than constructed metal units. Firewood is sold on-site at several campgrounds, with outside wood prohibited due to invasive species concerns. Basic amenities like drinking water and vault toilets are available, though facilities vary in maintenance quality. Crystal Creek Christian Campground offers rustic tent camping for $15 per night but prohibits alcohol consumption.

Tent campers visiting P.L. Graham Park report ample space between sites and good water access. According to reviews, the on-site caretaker is helpful and sells generous bundles of firewood for $10. One visitor noted that while only two sites are nestled in the woods, others are in open areas with trees on one side and water views on the other. Cell service is limited, so campers should prepare accordingly. The primitive tent camping experience at P.L. Graham includes porta-potty facilities and trash cans throughout the grounds. Port Huron KOA offers a more developed but potentially crowded environment for tent camping, with some reviewers mentioning limited shade at certain sites and higher noise levels, particularly on weekends when the campground becomes busy with families.

    Ridgewood Campground

    An Quick Camping Escape

We were warmly greeted by the attendee and the camp host. Firewood, snacks, camp essentials, and ice available on site. Nice touch having firewood delivered to our site. The gentleman could not have been kinder and offered assistance with us setting up. The site was a larger site (#12) tucked nicely away in a corner.

Picnic Table and Nice Fire Ring onsite. Port-a-potty, dumpster near site.

Fair warning, the staff aren’t the only ones ready to greet you! Bugs, Mosquitoes, bees, and even raccoons (if food left out - which we did not). We have been to sites before that must have sprayed for pests because we have never experienced the amount of mosquitoes we did here. Thankfully we had Off Area Camp Spray, our Thermacell, and citronella burning and it helped dramatically reduce the pests.

The noise level was very “citified.” Traffic could be heard throughout the evening and early morning. That’s what we get for camping so close to civilization. Also, beware of Poison Oak and Ivy! The entire site was bordered with it.

Lastly, make sure that if you car camp or SUV Camp, you let them know. They have a policy of making you park your car/SUV in the lot after setting up your tent (if tent camping).

Ortonville Equestrian Campground — Ortonville Recreation Area

    2 Great Lakes & A Horse Camp

The campground here is actually a quite popular equestrian campground. There is a campground and a staging area. Rustic vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. The campground itself isn’t really much to write home about (unless you have horses that is). The lakes and launches are however very nice and there are some great trail systems through the area.

    Algonac State Park Campground

    Escape from Detroit

Lots of different landscapes to explore. Great wildlife and views of the river. We were only here in winter when it was empty, I imagine it’d be pretty busy in summer. No showers but vault toilets and some powered sites. There are two camp site areas here, and one section is just for tents (but that one’s not on the river, so you have some tradeoffs). We were disappointed by all the shooting noises from the range.

    Lakeport State Park Campground

    State Park Near Port Huron

This was one of my least favorite state parks. Like many Michigan State Parks, the facilities are old and the campgrounds are overcrowded in the summer with local campers. We stay here one night on the way Ontario. The border crossing at Sarnia is about 20 miles south of the campsite. The sites are on top of each other with no privacy. The beach on the east side of the camp borders Lake Huron. It’s not much to look at with limited views and just a thin rocky shoreline. The beach is just a few hundred yards from the camp through a line of trees. The restroom facilities were outdated and in need of repair. This may be ok for a one night stop but would not recommend beyond a short stay.

    Wolverine Campground

    Nice Campground

Nice family campground with a beach, swimming area, and boat launch. Lake is supposed to be great for walleye fishing, even if it a tad shallow. Campground is well maintained with picnic tables, and fire rings. On holiday weekends it is heavily used, so you may want to call ahead before you go.

    Lakeport State Park Campground

    Rock Pickers unite!!!

Lakeport is one of the hidden gems in Michigan. We all have heard that you can find Petoskey Stones in Northern Michigan, well.... look no further!!!!! I have found the most beautiful Petoskey Stones at Lakeport. I have also found a large pudding stone. My husband brings his chair down to the water and I walk the short for hours and hours looking for rocks. The campground itself is awesome as well. There are two parts to the campground. We like to reserve our site at the North side of the campground as it is more wooded than the southern section. The sites are much larger in the north side and closer to the areas where rocks can be found! This campground is amazing. My suggestion is to book six months in advance because it is extremely hard to get into this campground on the weekends.

    Lakeport State Park Campground

Clean, friendly and sunny campsites. Nice beach and close to town

Most sites are full sun, local trails for biking and walking nice beach. Make sure to bring water shoes as the first few feet of the water is very rocky, but the beach area is large and clean, kids played in the sand all day.
