Birch Point Lodge Campground and Cottage Resort

    Pull-through sites are a joke!

I had hoped this campground would be amazing. It was our first camping trip of 2020 (amid COVID19). Sadly, we found it to be horrendously inadequate.

We traveled with family to this campground. We had two "pull-through" sites. These sites are a joke! There are six sites per road. There is literally no where to pull off of the camp road to set up your RV site. The RVs must be set up in the road! The tow vehicle can park off to the side once unhooked but the RVs in the middle sites of the camp road are pinned in. This could potentially be dangerous if there ever was an emergency!

If that's not bad enough, the sites are SUPER unlevel. Notice the photo in my review. We had to use so many leveling blocks to assist our auto-leveling system!!

The "pull-through" sites are literally on a hill. The sites small and there is no privacy from your neighbors.

When we arrived our sites were not clean at all. There was trash on the ground, as well as dog feces, and the grass was very tall.

Lastly, the dump station for the campground is on the side of the public roadway, at the entrance of the park….which is on the top of a huge hill.

The surrounding area is beautiful! We will certainly go back to the area but we will find a better campground the next time.

We will not return to this campground.

    Houlton/Canandian Border KOA

    Quaint but adorable

The hosts, who just recently bought this campground are very kind and accommodating. It will eventually be a KOA.

We came in the fall, and the foliage was beautiful. There are many little areas to walk and explore in the campground.

We have a TT and our campsite had wifi, a fire ring, and full hookups. We have kids so we opted for a site close enough to watch them play on the playground.

The pull-through sites are long and have trees in between and around so still gives a feeling of privacy.

    Remote and scenic

Handful of spots, directly on the beach of a quiet lake. The road runs between middle and lower Unknowns and the scenery is wonderful. There is a pit toilet, shared by 8-10 spots. Strictly pack-in/pack-out. About 20 miles from paved road and 10 miles from spotty cell service.

No fee, first-come first served. These fill up FAST in the summer. Don’t worry - if it’s full when you arrive head to Duck Lake or Gassabias Lake camp sites. They don’t fill up (in my experience).

Bugs here can be THICK so be prepared.

Sites include picnic table and fire ring. Some are private and others are more exposed. There are also “group sites” on both sides of the road driving in, and they’re more wooded than the beach sites.

Our first viewing of Northern Lights was on the beach here. Super quiet, amazing sunsets and lots of wildlife.

    Katahdin Shadows Campground

    Nice site markers

A bit crowded but very family friendly. Lit site markers made it easy to find your site. Not great site vehicle parking. We went on a holiday weekend with lots of events planned. Family hayride was fun. Kids enjoyed riding bikes and using the game room. Pool was clean and in a central location. Quick easy walk on a path to store and small restaurant.

    Amazing campground and people!

Stopped here for one night while passing through, water/electric sites for $35 and primitive tent sites for $21 (still has flush toilets and showers a short walk down the road). Super pet friendly! The people who run this place are absolutely incredible! I happed to stop in on a Friday night they were doing a bean bake with a BBQ, live music, and games for the kids! Would definitely come back anytime!

    Machias Rips Campsite

Amazing FREE Camp Site for All Types of Campers!

This campground is one of my favorites in Maine! Sitting only an hour from Ellsworth and Bangor ME this is a nature lovers dream!

The dirt road leading to the camp can be easily missed if not paying attention! But is clearly marked with a blue sign at the head of the road. Your GPS might not give you an “exact” location but i promise I found the place with no problem!

The road has a few pot holes but nothing my stock (Low to the ground) Dodge Caravan couldn’t handle, There is about 4 Sites with river front views and trails leading to the water from each camp. There are also bigger sites for campers and RV’s. There is a site with a wooden protection shelter for tent campers as well!

New style out houses are on site but other than that it’s completely off grid!

Most Cell phone carriers won’t have service back at the camp, I myself had to drive 20 Minutes up the road for signal, A cell signal booster may work here. Radio signal is fine tho.

Great spot to fish and swim! I’ve caught smallmouth bass, chubs and trout in the river so far! (Black and silver Jerk baits work great) The mosquitoes can get bad in the area but fire pits and fires are permitted in the camp and they helped keep me comfortable from bugs!

There is also a marked trail in the camp that leads deep into the woods, I followed it for about a mile before it got too thick for my interest. Could be the trail that connects to the large pools of water up the river with ADDITIONAL camping there as well.

    Keenes Lake Family Campground

    Cute Area

I stayed in a small site, just me and my vehicle. I asked for a quiet spot with elec and the site was perfect. It is basic, but more like what you would find at national parks, which I prefer MUCH MORE. My spot was shaded and level enough to have a tent, vehicle, chairs and table (not provided at my site), and they have a fire ring.

It isnt the usual RV sites that are sterile and squished in like sardines, so if thats what you looking for, this isnt it.

I paid $36 for my night, on par with national/ state parks, but much cheaper than most commerical camping grounds.  The area is a little overpriced, so it was nice to stay somewhere reasonable, especially at the end of the season.

THere isnt wifi, my car (ATT) got better service than my phone (Tmobile).

The road is decent, maybe a few spots to watch out for, and they ask you to keep the speed down (5mph) so they are trying to take care of it (or not let it get torn up too much)

I didnt use the shower, but the bathroom was plumbed.

    Unknown Lakes campsites

    Amazing Beauty, Amazing Camping Experience

Stayed for two nights after Labor Day. Only one other camper in the park and we never saw them but occasionally we could hear a voice. Other than that, it was quiet.

There are about 9 campsites, each with a picnic table, a fire ring and a large camping and parking area for each site.

The best feature of this campground is the view. There is a Lake on both east and west sides of the camping area. Three sites are view of both lakes from the camp sites. I woke up to a view of one lake and my wife saw the other lake from our camper.

The campground has three pit toilets. The large size of the camp sites makes it feel more secluded than it is

We did hear something like a lumber mill operating one morning. Not sure what that was all about.

A Ranger stopped by and visited with us. He then offered us a brochure on the camping area we are planning to visit next. Nice customer service right at our camp site!

    Keenes Lake Family Campground

    Nice people

We stayed here one night in mid September. There are new owners and they are really nice people. It is hard to get a level site but the owner let us pick what was best for us based on what was available. Majority of campers are seasonal. The shower had hot water and a heat lamp but could use a renovation. Quiet place with a pretty lake.
