Starting point for a Katadhin adventure

There are drive up tent sites and lean to sites as well as walk in sites (fairly short walk and easy to locate). Great place to start for an adventure to summit katadhin and tackle knifes edge. I will definitely be back. Hiked past chimney pond (another campsite) with great views of the mountain. That site is hike in only whereas roaring brook has parking.

Great base camp for climbing Katahdin

We booked a night at a lean-to in Roaring Brook Campground so after we climbed Katahdin we wouldn't have to drive home. The hike took all day, but at the end we had a great place to chill! A dip in Roaring Brook (pretty cold one, I must say) and a small campfire with a BBQ capped off a fantastic day! Early the next morning, we took a short hike to Sandy Stream pond to hunt for moose and loosen up the body. It really paid off!

we had a group site for 11 of us. we fit all our tents and a rain shelter easily and 5 cars in the parking across the street. keep in mind there is no running water here.bring plenty or water purifying filters or tablets. there is an outhouse and it is kept clean. there are also large wooden rain shelters between the group sites. be sure to put all food away at night.

Roaring Brook

Pleasant campsites with fire pits. Stars are incredible at night if you can get enough of a clearing. Only downside are some of the rangers who make all attempts to scare people away from doing any of the more strenuous hikes to the top. Some of the most annoying rangers I've ever encountered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make reservations for Roaring Brook Campground in Baxter State Park?

Reservations for Roaring Brook Campground are required and can be made through Baxter State Park's reservation system. Due to high demand, especially during peak hiking season, it's advisable to book well in advance. The campground offers various site options including individual tent sites, lean-tos, and group sites that can accommodate larger parties. Reservation fees are reasonable compared to other camping options in the area. Contact Baxter State Park directly for the most current reservation procedures, fees, and availability.

How does Roaring Brook Campground compare to other campgrounds near Baxter State Park?

Roaring Brook Campground stands out for its prime location at the trailhead for Mount Katahdin, making it the ideal base camp for hikers planning to summit. While the campsites are described as basic compared to other options, the location can't be beat. Chimney Pond Campground, located further up the mountain, offers spectacular views but requires a hike in. Roaring Brook provides drive-up access with both tent sites and lean-tos, plus a short walk to walk-in sites. The campground is quieter and more rustic than many alternatives outside the park, with an emphasis on natural surroundings rather than amenities.

What amenities and facilities are available at Roaring Brook Campground?

Roaring Brook Campground offers basic, rustic facilities including tent sites, lean-tos, and group sites. Each campsite comes with a fire pit for cooking and warmth. The campground has clean outhouses but no running water, so visitors must bring their own water or use purification methods for water from Roaring Brook. Large wooden rain shelters are available for group gatherings. The campground's minimalist approach highlights its natural setting, with stunning nighttime star-viewing opportunities when skies are clear. Parking is available across from the campground for overnight guests.

What is the best time to visit Roaring Brook Campground for hiking Mount Katahdin?

Summer through early fall (June to September) offers the best conditions for hiking Mount Katahdin from Roaring Brook Campground. This period provides more stable weather and longer daylight hours for tackling the strenuous trails, including the challenging Knife Edge. Many hikers stay overnight at Roaring Brook specifically to get an early start on Katahdin, as the hike typically takes a full day to complete. Late May can also work, though early season conditions may be encountered. By late October, weather becomes less predictable and facilities may begin to close for the season.

Is the Roaring Brook Bunkhouse different from the regular campground sites?

Yes, the Roaring Brook lean-tos and bunkhouse options differ from standard tent sites. The lean-tos provide sheltered camping with three walls and a roof, offering protection from rain while still providing an outdoor experience. These structures are popular among hikers who want minimal setup after a long day on Katahdin. While specific bunkhouse details are limited, Baxter State Park offers bunkhouse accommodations at some locations that provide shared indoor sleeping arrangements. These structures typically offer a more protected sleeping environment than tent sites, which is particularly valuable during inclement weather. Contact the park for current availability and specific amenities.
