really close to Katahdin trails, reasonable price, great views
Has a ton of activities — swimming pool, mild/easy trails, horseback riding, etc. Campsites are close to one another and showers/bathrooms are available. Not all that remote or private and doesn’t offer many trails or outstanding scenes, but a good site for family trips or a weekend away with friends.
Definitely had some cool views and hiking spots, but was overall underwhelming. Had a few waterfalls here and there, and is next to a cool town to explore. Good to see over one day but probably don’t need much more time than that.
I go to Hocking Hills every year and love it every time. They have a handful of different trails and hiking experiences that takes several days to explore. Can get crowded during busy seasons, but overall is relatively remote and quiet. Definitely love Ash Cave and Old Man’s Cave. Campgrounds are reasonably priced.
Cell service is finicky — definitely wouldn’t rely on your phone GPS once you get into the park.
This is a sweet campground near Cedarville/Xenia. It’s got quite a bit of space for campgrounds and has a few mild hiking trails and a meadow nearby. It’s a nice place for a last minute get together with friends or large group camp weekends. Fire pits available and near other hiking sites like the Clifton Gorge.
This campground is cheap and easy to access. It has a fire pit, nearby bathrooms, WiFi, and was in short driving distance to the Sleeping Bear Dunes and Traverse City. They have a shop at the entrance where you check in and have food, ice, and firewood available. It’s definitely not remote (you’re close by to neighbors, and close to state routes), but is close to major attractions and trails and gets the job done :) Would definitely go again.
I love elkmont! It’s located only a short drive from Gatlinburg and several major hiking trails including Chimney Top. It’s also beautiful, surrounded by trees, you can hear waterfalls, plenty of space from other campers, etc. Definitely makes you feel like you’re more remote than some other campsites I’ve been to.
