New Orleans RV Resort & Marina, located approximately 40 miles east of Lockport, offers tent camping sites along with other accommodation types. This waterfront property provides access to both urban attractions and Louisiana waterways, making it suitable for tent campers seeking proximity to New Orleans while still having outdoor amenities.

The center includes a public fishing pond with a lighted, paved track that tent campers can enjoy.

The tent camping experience in this region reflects the subtropical climate of southern Louisiana. Sites remain accessible year-round due to the mild winter temperatures, though summer heat and humidity can be challenging for tent campers. When selecting tent campsites near Lockport, campers should consider the limited shade available at many locations, particularly during hot summer months. Most walk-in tent locations feature minimal separation between sites, and reservations are recommended for weekend stays, especially during busy periods or when events are scheduled at the expo center.

    Grand Isle State Park Campground

    RV park and beach camping

Good spot for fishermen and birding, but the sites are not private at all. The electric sites are $30 a night and it’s an RV park with manicured lawns covered in tiny mammal poops and lawn trimmings and 1-2 palm trees per site. You get electric and water, but the water tastes very chlorinated. There’s at least 2 dishwashing stations. Great access to the beach, lots of shorebirds and skimmers, spectacular sunrise and sunset. The bathrooms are nice too, but far from the electric sites so it’s a hike or a bike ride to use them. Showers are hot and clean. The tent sites feel more private since it feels more nature-y on the beach and less like a neighborhood, and they each have a fire ring and picnic table. Mosquitos are a given for the region, as is heavy morning dew in January. Some great casual southern dining options nearby.

    Grand Isle State Park Campground

Nice small park at the end of the island

The campground is nice and well maintained. We were in site 14 for 8 days. Some of the turns, though open, were a little tight for bigger rigs, with several leaving deep tracks in the soft ground and mud. Most of the sites, though reasonably level, had fairly large low areas that tended to flood with water a few inches deep. The water did tend to drain within a day or so after the rain stopped. AT&T coverage was“fair”, generally with 3 Bars and up to~9 MB/s, but usually around or less than 0.4 MB/s. Although the campground is supposed to have WiFi, I was unable to get a connection to it. There is no cable, but we did have DISH satellite coverage at our site, as would any of the sites, so I didn’t test OTA DTV channels

The beach area was nice, but it was rainy and very windy most of our stay, as two major winter storms raged across the country, though Terri did get out to walk it whenever the weather permitted. One day we did see a shoal of porpoises just out from the park’s pier.

There is only one trail in the campground looks to have low lying areas that flood or hold water most of the time, making hiking it problematic. Although there is a grocery/hardware/everything store a just a few miles down the road, their selection of groceries was rather limited, so don’t plan to get fancy.

    Grand Isle State Park Campground

"A quaint drinking town with a fishing problem"

So many ways to break this down

    1. The campgrounds. RV and tent camping sites are all pull through. Not big spots, no privacy or shade ... location, location, location. They all have fire pits, water and elect. Some have separate grills. The Tent only sites are on the beach. You have to carry your gear, no driving on the beach. Pick a site closer to the bath houses - there are 2. Big bath houses, plenty of showers.

    2. The Park. There are 2 piers for saltwater fishing as well as a dock for inlet fishing. There are other small marshy areas to fish depending on the tide.

    3. The town. Grand Isle is all about being at the end of the world and fishing. Be prepared to see cars parked along the side of the road and people fishing from any spot there is water. There is water everywhere.

We were not prepared to do serious fishing on this trip but still had a blast. We played with crabs in the inlet, put our feet in the Gulf, watched shrimp boats. There is a hiking trail, but at high tide it is flooded so you can't access it.

No matter the time of year or the wind speed - BUG SPRAY IS A NECESSITY!

New Orleans RV Resort & Marina

Nice park, but a little overpriced

Pontchartrain Landing is nice RV park. We had a great weekday stay in late December and the weather was nice. Its not far from downtown New Orleans. When you first get off the Interstate, the area looks abandoned and a little sketchy, but it is ok. Apple Maps guided me right to the park. There is a restaurant and bar, but we didnt eat there. I enjoyed walking and sitting along the water in the mornings. The occasional noise from airplanes taking off from nearby Lakefront Airport was a small detraction. Playground was not much.   Place is fenced at gated for added security.

Stayed in waterfront campsite#21, but view was partially blocked by houseboats.  Pretty disappointed for $89/night.  Back-in site with gravel parking and a picnic table. No BBQ pit or fire ring. 15A/30A/50A, water, sewer, and cable TV hookups. Site was pretty level. Awning faced north so we had some shade from the sun. There was a flower bed with palm trees between the sites. Not much shade in the park. The site is located on the water. Neighbor was at least 20 ft. Away. Roads in the park were gravel creating some dust. Both AT&T and Verizon had good signal(3 bars each). AT&T Speedtest= 26.8 Mbps down, x 6.5 Mbps up. Free Wi-Fi is available at the office/restaurant and paid available it the sites. Did not use the Wi-Fi.

Overall, not impressed for the price, but would stay here again. We camped at New Orleans RV Resort& Marina in a Travel Trailer.

Lake End Park Campground & Marina

    Good For An Overnight

Large campground and park that has RV areas and tent camping areas as well. There are a few loops in this campground. Some are paved; the further loop where we stayed is not. Our site was right on the water where were could see pelicans diving for fish and other water birds as well.

If you are looking for privacy this is NOT your place. Sites are very close together and we had to make sure our slide did not hit the neighbor's truck side mirror! Also not very quiet. If you don't hear boats roaming around then you can hear children playing in the multiple playgrounds or the neighbor's music playing or overall road noise. It is a good place if you just need a night or if you fish or have a boat I suppose.

Bathrooms/showers are not very convenient and are not very nice.  The shower was full of bugs (dead and alive) and though free you had to consistently keep pushing the "on" button to turn the water on for 30 second intervals.  Also, you have no choice as far as water temperature. It wasn't too cold or too hot but if you want hotter in the winter or cooler water in the summer, you don't get that option. There was also only one hook for belongings and the door wasn't secure.

There is a laundry room but it was so far from us (in the other camping loop) that we did not go to it even though we picked this place so we could take showers and do laundry.

This campground is convenient and cheap and close to town and the highway but I don't think I would stay here again unless I was desperate. It is nice and well maintained and clean but the closeness of people and the distance to amenities is a no go.

There is trash (no recycling) as well as the aforementioned showers, bathrooms and laundry. There is also a beach area, playgrounds  and boating/fishing. There is a fire pit, picnic table and full hook ups at each site for the RVs.

The website is weird because the "off" and "busy" seasons seem opposite and from other reviews they had disputes over the cost, so we weren't sure what to expect, but we paid $20 online for a Monday night and the nice office ladies didn't say anything when we were checking in.

Lake End Park Campground & Marina

    Very nice camping area

I think this is a very nice camping area for both RV’s and tent camping, but it does have some minor drawbacks. There is a protected area on the lake within the park that you can launch your boat and they do have two restrooms with showers as well as washers and dryer’s to clean your clothes. Bathrooms in nearly every camping area across the country I’ve been to aren’t exactly up to home standards, but it is functional. The people working at the park have always been friendly and helpful. I like to tent camp and even the tent campsites have electrical hook ups. The truly bizarre thing about that is we are located in South Louisiana where the temperatures are absolutely brutally hot and majority of the year and yet they have a rule that clearly states you cannot have an air conditioner in your tent. And luckily, I didn’t see that the first four or five times I stayed there and no one said a word. Why in the world could you not hook up a portable AC unit in your tent considering electrical hook ups are provided and AC units make nearly no noise? Speaking of noise, the park is located in just inside a 90° curve in the highway with two sets of rumble strips in each direction. Being located practically within the city limits of Morgan city, or noise from traffic and the rumble strips doesn’t quiet down until well after midnight and picks back up again in full force around 5 AM. I couple that with the majority of the people here wanting their trucks to make the most noise possible, it’s a bit distracting and makes sleep difficult. Like all camping areas, people are going to listen to all manners and types of music but that quiet down significantly after 10 PM. my last trip about a week ago I noticed that my particular campsite was covered in fire ants that would start to build colonies within all your camping equipment left on the ground outside and they also built a major ant city underneath our tent that wasn’t an issue until I was breaking down the camp and the ants decided to scatter all over the tent inside and out. the fishing is fantastic down here and the wildlife is incredible. You will see alligators of course along with rabbits, black squirrels, osprey bald eagles as well as seagulls and pelicans given our close proximity to the gulf coast. The office has people working in it every day of the week and and there is a Coke machine at the office and they do sell 8 pound bags of ice for $2. Overall, I really like camping here and then will continue to do so as long as no one says anything about having an AC unit in my tent as I would not consider staying in a tent in South Louisiana without one.

    St. Bernard State Park Campground

    Heat Humidity and Jambalaya

Holy Goodness it is HOT in South Louisiana in May.

Campground and Site 9: nice and roomy sites with electric, water, grill, fire pit, picnic table and shade trees. There is 1 bath house and around 50 sites. The grounds are very clean and very well kept. Not crowded or too busy. There is a playground in the campsite between sites 10 and 11. At site 9, I could watch the kids play while I sat in the shade, watched them and relaxed. There is a 1-mile nature trail from campground to say use area. The bath house was clean and spacious and across from site 9. This campground is perfect for relaxing and taking it easy. The kids got bored pretty quick though. Would be better to visit in the fall and winter.

PARK: the park is small. There is a splash pad that was a huge hit for the little boys. This is the parks main attraction for the locals. Sunday's the locals get in free but it was not packed. There is very little shade in this area. You need to bring chairs and a canopy. There are (2) covered areas but is awkward to share the space with others. There are tons of picnic spots in the day use area and a huge pavilion. There was once a pool but it is closed now.

NEARBY: when here, you are very close to the Chalmette Battlefield National Park and Cemetery where the famous battle of New Orleans took place. This park offers great history lesson and period dressed reenactments. Best time to visit is in early January when they recreate the battle. (Check dates with the park)

JAMBALAYA: being from Louisiana at a nice lazy campground, we decided to cook a local favorite.

    Cypress Lake RV Resort

    Best Campground Down the Bayou

Stayed here for 3 months while working a travel nurse contract in Houma, LA. A small family-owned and operated campground where the owners were found on property daily. They go out of their way to ensure those staying there have a great time, this includes live music on the weekends, bingo, crafts, fishing tournaments, pool party with DJ, scavenger hunts and on-site RV repair by the owner. In addition the regular amenities include pool, small store, 8 washers and 8 dryers, WiFi, golf cart rental, boat rental, fish cleaning station, clean bathrooms with showers and pool bar and grille.

All sites have 50/30/20 electric with water/sewer, sites are all gravel and tight with some sites more level than others. Site size is not a problem during the week, because there is hardly anyone there. But even on sold out holiday weekends it is generally a quiet area. The higher the site number, the closer to the lake. Rows 1 and 4 are pull through while 2 and 3 are back-in. Rows 1, 3 and 4 allow the passenger side of the camper to face the lake.

Beautiful sunset on the far side of the lake.

You do need to bring your own grille as there are no charcoal grilles on site. The Wifi is spotty in certain parts of the campground.

If you are in the region, this is the best RV campground to stay in!

    New Orleans West KOA

    Tight spaces, good location

The spaces are a bit tight, only RV spots have a fire pit. Showers are well kept but the place smells musty. The location can’t be beat and the employees are great. Very safe area and convenient shopping places nearby. Short drive to downtown. Good Wi-Fi, good laundry and dish cleaning area. Would stay again but I wish the small camper area would be more spaced out and have fire pits or grills. Nice little playground and the pool looked good as well.

Guide to Lockport

Tent camping options near Lockport, Louisiana provide access to the region's bayous, marshlands and waterways of southern Louisiana. Camping areas in this region sit at near sea level elevations with terrain characterized by wetlands and drainage canals. Despite limited camping availability directly in Lockport, several established campgrounds within driving distance accommodate tent campers throughout the subtropical climate conditions of the region.

What to do

Water activities access: New Orleans RV Resort & Marina provides direct canal access for boaters and paddlers. One camper noted that "it's right on the water so you can see yachts and boats come in and out," making it an excellent basecamp for water activities.

Event attendance: Lamar Dixon Expo Center regularly hosts various events throughout the year. According to a visitor, "This is a great central location to the Baton Rouge and even New Orleans area. Lamar Dixon is huge, and usually has some type of event happening."

Urban exploration: Tent camping near New Orleans provides convenient access to the city. A camper at New Orleans RV Resort & Marina mentioned it's "only 10 minutes in good traffic to the French Quarter, 20 to the Garden District and zoo," making day trips easy for tent campers without needing to relocate.

What campers like

Convenient location: The camping areas serve as central hubs for exploring both natural and urban attractions. One visitor noted that New Orleans RV Resort & Marina is "a hidden gem in NOLA, it's fifteen minutes to the action. And a beautiful campsite."

Well-maintained facilities: Many campgrounds maintain clean, well-kept grounds. A recent camper reported that one park was "head and shoulders cleaner, nicer, tidier than our previous parks. The shower rooms were also immaculate."

Outdoor amenities: Lamar Dixon Expo Center offers additional outdoor recreation opportunities beyond camping. As one reviewer pointed out, "There is a public fishing pond with a very nice solar lighted, paved track around it."

What you should know

Variable pricing: Camping costs can fluctuate based on season and demand. One camper noted about New Orleans RV Resort & Marina: "They charge $69 per night, which is far too expensive for my budget. Could be holiday pricing but not sure since requested dates fall after New Years."

Industrial approach roads: Some campgrounds may have unexpected access routes. A camper mentioned: "Don't let the road in past some industrial and manufacturing warehouses fool you. This is a great spot to stop and has a restaurant on-site as well."

Utility configurations: Campground utility setups can present challenges. At Lamar Dixon, a camper explained: "The hookups are shared between 4 sites. Think the center of a rectangle made of 4 rectangles... There were only 2 50A receptacles at my station."

Tips for camping with families

Noise considerations: Be aware of potential noise sources near campsites. One camper at New Orleans RV Resort & Marina mentioned: "The occasional noise from airplanes taking off from nearby Lakefront Airport was a small detraction. Playground was not much."

Wildlife awareness: The region has native wildlife including alligators. A camper shared: "I always worry whenever we are anywhere with possible gators so we didn't go looking and were careful at night. Im sure the locals would get a laugh outta watching me walk my dogs in any of the over grown/swampy/near water areas."

Amenity access: Look for campgrounds with additional family-friendly facilities. One visitor highlighted: "Lovely pool and restaurant with great prices. The shower rooms were also immaculate."

Tips from RVers

Security features: Security considerations vary between campgrounds. One RVer noted that their campground was "fenced and gated for added security," which provides peace of mind for equipment and belongings.

Site spacing: Campsite privacy can differ significantly. A camper observed that at Lamar Dixon Expo Center, "lots are a little small but good for a quick stay," while another mentioned their site at New Orleans RV Resort had "nice space and plants in between each campsite so you have privacy."

Road conditions: Interior roads at campgrounds may not always be paved. One camper mentioned: "Roads in the park were gravel creating some dust," which is worth considering when selecting a site location, especially for tent campers concerned about dust.
