    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Lake Claiborne State Park Campground offers rustic and modern cabins on the waterfront, approximately 5 miles from Homer. Cabins include electricity, running water, air conditioning, and standard furnishings. Most units provide a kitchenette with microwave, refrigerator, and basic cooking essentials. Bathrooms with showers are standard in all cabin accommodations. Fishing piers are accessible directly from some waterfront cabin sites. "Stayed in a cabin and it was great! Very clean and useable," noted one visitor about the accommodations at Lake Bistineau State Park.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Kels Kove near Homer provides lakeside cabin rentals with 50-amp electric hookups and water service, suitable for visitors seeking direct water access. Lake D'Arbonne State Park, located in nearby Bernice, features year-round cabin availability with both water and sewer connections. Most properties require advance reservations, particularly during summer months and weekends. Pet policies vary by location, with Lake Claiborne and Kels Kove allowing pets in designated cabin areas. A reviewer commented, "Very pretty camping area. We stayed here at site 14. Had a long pier over the water, and plenty of space between campers."

Most cabins include basic furniture but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Cooking facilities vary significantly between properties, with some offering only outdoor fire rings while others provide fully equipped kitchens. Kels Kove maintains a country store with essential supplies, alcoholic beverages, and basic provisions. Cell service can be inconsistent throughout the region, with AT&T generally providing better coverage than Verizon in most locations. Lucky H & W Farm Hatchery Cabin offers a more secluded experience with limited amenities but includes drinking water, toilets, showers, and firewood availability.

Gavel Falls Cabin Rentals and RV Campground

      New and clean

Kind of an odd location— behind an auction yard. Nice concrete slabs for RVs. Fair gravel roads, 3 very nice log cabins, at least 2 covered RV spaces. BBQ grills and fire pits are brand new. Private pond on site. Because it is relatively new they have a few bugs to work out but I would stay there again.

Lake D'Arbonne State Park — New Lake D'arbonne State Park

Beautiful state park with something for everyone

This lakeside state park has RV and tent camping, cabins, lodges and YURTS available. There are also day use pavilions available for family reunions, employee barbecues or birthday celebrations. You can also rent a meeting room in the visitors center.

There are lots of recreational opportunities which include hiking, biking, fishing, canoe and kayak rentals, tennis courts and an 18-hole disc golf course. They also have a large hiking trail system. Closed right now but available Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend they also have a really large swimming pool. A tornado hit the park in March 2021 and there’s still some trees down and a brief section of the trail I walked on today that wasn’t accessible but it is an easy detour amazing how much they have restored.

      Jimmie Davis State Park Campground

Prettiest La. State Park (so far)

Jimmie Davis State Park is wonderful, well maintained, and has a number of amenities.  Prettiest La. State Park I've stayed in so far. We had a great stay the days before Thanksgiving, and the weather was awesome. The fall leaf colors were spectacular. Caney Lake is clean and beautiful. I enjoyed walking and sitting along the lake in the mornings. Bathrooms were clean.

Stayed in campsite#52. Back-in site with asphalt parking, picnic table and fire ring. 15A/30A/50A, and water. No deck, sewer, Wi-Fi, and cable TV hookups. It has a large area on door/awning side. Awning faced west but the trees provided ample shade from the evening sun shining underneath. The spot is well spaced from other sites. The site is located near the lake. I wish the site had a paved patio or deck like site 51 and 54 on either side. Nearest neighbor was at least 30-40 ft. Away. Roads in the park were asphalt/concrete/gravel.

Both AT&T and Verizon had low signal(2 bars each). AT&T Speedtest= 16.8 Mbps down, 1.4 Mbps up. We camped in a Travel Trailer. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at Jimmie Davis State Park in a Travel Trailer.

      Lake Bistineau State Park Campground

      Beautiful state park

Lake Bistineau is a great state park park near Shreveport, LA. We stayed 2 nights. The sites are very shady. The park streets and sites are asphalt. Some roads need repaving. The park was clean and quiet, and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, the lake was drawn down to eradicate an invasive water plant. But, this presented a unique opportunity. We could walk on the dry lake bottom and see the parts of cypress trees that are normally under water.

Stayed in back-in campsite#14 which was level side to side, but the front was higher. The site has a nice view of the lake and a large wooden deck. There was just enough parking for my 34 ft TT and truck. Neighbors are nearby, but not too close. The site included: picnic table on concrete, BBQ pit, trash pole, and fire ring. Utilities: 20/30/50A electric in back. Water in back, good pressure. No sewer, but a dump station is available.

AT&T had 2 bars of LTE and Verizon 2 bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 5.1 Mbps down, 0.7 Mbps up. Verizon Speedtest: 7.4 Mbps down, 0.1 Mbps up. No WiFi.

Would stay here again. We camped at Lake Bistineau State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Gavel Falls Cabin Rentals and RV Campground

Under New Ownership as a KOA

This new KOA is ok for an overnight stop while passing through. They recently completed construction on new concrete pads at the front of the property with a swing, picnic tables and fire pit at each site. Absolutely zero shade which was terrible during this heat wave with 105 degree days.

As a recently acquired KOA the pool was actually attached to the owners old home (he moved down the property to a new home) and the house is now rentable for larger groups. There are a handful of cabins in the back past the store. The campsite has a bizarre single track road in and out that requires one party to pull off into grass to allow another to pass.

If you're looking for all the standard KOA amenities, including jumping pillow or other trademarked amenity, this will do for a night or two.

      Cypress Black Bayou Recreation Area

      Great Park

This is a parish ran park that is very well maintained. Security measures are excellent. The park is shaded and all sites are either lake side or almost. There are back-in and pull-through sites. Not all of the park is FHU but they have three pull through dumps. There is a new bathhouse that is very clean and requires a code to be entered on a keypad for entry. There is a small wildlife sanctuary (zoo but no petting) and free roaming peacocks. Good fishing from the docks or by boat. The park is close to shopping, casinos, and restaurants. Love this park.

      Lake Bistineau State Park Campground

      Classic southern cypress setting

A taste of the swamps in north Louisiana. Spanish moss clad Bald Cypress trees in a stereotypical Louisiana lake. Two great boat ramps, cabins and picnic tables. Keep your small dogs on a leash or you may feed the gators. Mosquitoes big enough to land at Barksdale AFB.

      Lake Bistineau State Park Campground

      Nice enough

We stayed here for a one night stopover. I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to stay there again but I was happy enough with my stop. It’s an older park. The lake is pretty swampy. No sewer at the sites, but water and electric. Cell service with AT&T was pretty weak but manageable to get some work done. Bathhouse was a typical older state park set up. Definitely needs some TLC. It would take a little work to get level in most of the sites from what I can see. They do have a wooden platform (almost like a deck) at most sites that is pretty cool. Our table was old and kinda warped. There is a fire pit. Table and fire are down a level but sites where we stayed were large and spacious. The park was almost empty during our stay but when we booked there were very few open sites available less than a week earlier. That seemed odd once we saw there was literally no one staying there. Sunset was beautiful.

    Guide to Homer

Lake Claiborne State Park Campground offers cabin stays within a pine forest setting approximately 5 miles from Homer. The park features numerous hiking trails ranging from 0.5 to 2 miles, including the King of the Mountain Trail with wooden bridges spanning small waterfalls. Cabin camping options in the Homer area typically require reservations, especially during summer months when waterfront units fill quickly. Winter visits provide more availability and often lower rates at most area parks.

    What to do

Hiking trails for all skill levels: Lake Claiborne State Park Campground offers marked trails suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. "Stunning Views with Great Amenities. We tent camp here in early Spring in the camping area #2 and comeback weekend after weekend. Many wonderfully marked hiking trails... The King of the Mountain Trail is my favorite because of its wooden bridge and tiny waterfall," notes one visitor.

Disc golf courses: Lake Claiborne State Park Campground maintains two disc golf courses for visitors. "We tent camp here in early Spring in the camping area #2 and comeback weekend after weekend. Many wonderfully marked hiking trails, two of the best frisbe golf courses in Louisiana," explains a camper who frequents the park.

Swimming areas: Parks around Homer maintain designated swimming zones with beach access. Lake Claiborne State Park features "a nice little beach where the kids can play and a playground area as well," according to a regular visitor. Most swimming areas have seasonal operation between April and October, with no lifeguards present.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Lake Bistineau State Park Campground maintains well-kept bathhouses and common areas. "The bathroom/shower house was clean. It was a little ways from I-20 but overall decent park," reports one tent camper. Another visitor notes, "Showers/bathrooms were spotless. One minor drawback—no sewer sites."

Lakeside views: Cabins positioned along the water provide direct views of the cypress-lined lakes. "Very pretty camping area. We stayed here at site 14. Had a long pier over the water, and plenty of space between campers. Not level ground, but we managed with enough blocks to get it level," shares a Lake Claiborne visitor.

Wildlife viewing: Lake D'Arbonne State Park offers abundant wildlife viewing opportunities from cabin sites. "Lake Darbonne is our first experience with camping. I really didn't know what to expect but we really loved it: the staff is really helpful, the campsite is really cosy, the view on the lake is beautiful," writes one first-time camper. Another visitor at Lake Claiborne State Park notes, "TONS of deer, nice little beach area."

    What you should know

Varied cell service: Network coverage differs significantly between properties in the Homer area. "Wi-Fi did not work anywhere in park (signal broadcasted fine just no connection to internet) AT&T is non existent," reports a Lake Claiborne visitor. At Kels Kove near Homer, "ATT works best, Verizon and Tmobie are spotty reception."

Seasonal lake levels: Water levels fluctuate at several lakes, which affects fishing and boat access. "Didn't realize they lowered the lake. My fault for not investigating more," mentions a cabin guest at Lake Bistineau. Some piers may not reach water during certain seasons, particularly fall and winter months.

Reservation requirements: Most cabin facilities require advance booking, especially for weekend stays. Lake Claiborne State Park typically books 2-3 months in advance for summer weekends, while winter weekdays often have same-week availability. Cancellation policies typically require 48-72 hours notice for refunds.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Jimmie Davis State Park Campground offers multiple child-friendly play areas. "Clean, well kept park. Has a nice splash pad and beach for kids. Also a couple parks and many hammocks," shares one family visitor. Most playgrounds are positioned near bath houses for convenience.

Nature exploration: Lake Claiborne State Park provides educational opportunities through marked trails. "The pavement is well kept and great for kids to ride bikes or scooters," notes a visitor, highlighting the family-friendly design of the facilities.

Water activities for children: Many cabin locations include shallow swimming areas suitable for younger visitors. "Has a nice splash pad and beach for kids," reports a Jimmie Davis State Park visitor. Most splash pads operate seasonally between May and September, with variable hours depending on temperature.

    Tips for RVers

Site leveling challenges: Cypress Black Bayou Recreation Area offers spacious RV sites but some require leveling equipment. "Plenty of room between sites and great views. She really enjoyed riding her bike around the campground," notes an RV camper. Some waterfront sites may require additional blocks for proper leveling.

Full hookup availability: Several parks near Homer now offer complete utility connections. "Only wish they had some full hookup sites available. I hear that's coming soon," mentions a Lake Bistineau camper. Lake D'Arbonne State Park and Kels Kove provide full hookups at select cabin and RV sites, with reservations recommended.

RV size restrictions: Some cabin areas have limitations on accompanying RV parking. Most campgrounds accommodate trailers up to 40 feet, but access roads at some locations have tight turns that prove challenging for larger rigs. Specific site dimensions are typically available when making reservations.
