Best Tent Camping near Franklin, LA

Tent camping options near Franklin, Louisiana are limited but include several established sites within driving distance. Attakapas Wildlife Management Area offers primitive tent camping with basic amenities and requires a permit for overnight stays. Cypremort Point State Park, located on Vermillion Bay in the Gulf of Mexico, provides tent sites on a man-made beach, though reviews indicate conflicting information about tent camping availability.

Tent sites at Attakapas WMA feature picnic tables and access to drinking water, with space for multiple tents. A bathroom facility is available near the boating launch area. Campers must sign in and out through the Louisiana WMA website before setting up. The area remains relatively undeveloped, providing a more rustic camping experience approximately two miles from town. Cell service is generally available throughout the camping area. Cypremort Point's tent sites include picnic tables and grills, but facilities are basic with cold outdoor showers and limited amenities during off-season periods.

The camping experience varies significantly between locations. Attakapas WMA offers more seclusion and natural surroundings with opportunities to observe wildlife and enjoy sunset views over open fields. According to one visitor, "The site has 3 picnic tables with plenty of room for tents. About 2 miles from town, with decent service. Beautiful sunsets over the fields." Cypremort Point provides beach access and water activities but lacks privacy between sites. A review mentioned, "Day use goers can walk across your site, no privacy. Can't park vehicle by your site." Both locations experience seasonal variations in conditions and crowds, with Cypremort Point described as "VERY quiet in off season" with locked gates providing security. Lamar Dixon Expo Center, while primarily serving RVs, does accommodate tent camping near its fishing pond area, particularly during events.

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park Campground

CCU#4, unimproved canoe campsite #4, at Lake Fausse Point State Park, Louisiana

Nice primitive campsite on an island that you get to by boat (motor boat/canoe/kayak). Site is also known as Highland Waters campsite. Nice big flat area under trees including large live oaks to set up your tents or hammocks under. Has a fire ring, but no toilets, no water, no electrical. Does have a covered wooden table to serve as a rough kitchen kiosk. Wooden dock by waters edge also has a picnic table. Must call the state park to reserve this site.

    Chases RV Park

    NEVER again!

My husband works out of town and we rented a 30 amp slot at Chase's RV/Weeks Island Rd RV for 1 month starting on 7/15/21. From the start, we had a problem with not being able to have enough power to run our hot water heater, or AC and lights were constantly dimming and outside breaker was tripping. When we spoke to the owner about the situation, he tried to say there was a problem with our RV, but by his own admission stated that they had had 2 different RVs"burn down" in the park. After a week in a half, we moved to another park and to no surprise, have had no electrical issues what so ever at the new park. Although the owner is nice enough, the manager of the property can be rude and obnoxious. When we spoke to the owner about the electrical issue and notified him that the problems resolved when we moved to another park and that the electrical issue is obviously with his park, he declined to refund any of the rental fees. If you value your safety and property, Absolutely no amenities.  Pool has been dug up, no wifi, no cable, and by managements own admission, the laudry and bath house stay locked because a park resident has bedbugs.  Stay far away from this park.

    Cypremort Point State Park Campground

    March 2022

Five tenting Only sites. NO RV sites at this time. Cold outdoor showers available Tent sites are on a man made beach. Picnic table and grill for each site. New board walk almost complete. Picnic pavilion. No senior or other discounts for tent sites. In the off season you will not find anything open. Bring all that you’ll need. Feel it’s a little expensive compared to campgrounds with many more amenities, nicer bathrooms and hot showers. Birding is good. VERY quiet in off season. Locked gate and feels safe.

    Poche's RV Park & Fish-N-Camp

Nice RV park. Convenient for canoeing in Bayou Teche.

Poches RV park is nice, well maintained, and has number of amenities. We had a wonderful weekend stay, and the weather was perfect. We canoed in the Shake Your Trail Feather festival on Bayou Teche. The RV park was close the the canoe trailhead. Take the time to explore the city of Breaux Bridge.

Go to Poches Market and buy some pork sausage stuffed with jalapeos. Also, be sure to make a reservation and go eat at Little Big Cup in Arnaudville about 15 minutes away.

Stayed in campsite#69. Back-in site with concrete parking, picnic table, and fire ring. 15A/30A/50A, water, and sewer hookups. It has a nice grass area with fire pit in the rear of the site next to the lake. Not much shade in the campsite. The site is located on the lake. Neighbors were pretty close. Roads in the park were asphalt or gravel. The free WiFi throughout the park was adequate for checking emails, surfing the web, etc. We camped in a Travel Trailer. Would stay here again. We camped at Poche's RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lake End Park Campground & Marina

    Good For An Overnight

Large campground and park that has RV areas and tent camping areas as well. There are a few loops in this campground. Some are paved; the further loop where we stayed is not. Our site was right on the water where were could see pelicans diving for fish and other water birds as well.

If you are looking for privacy this is NOT your place. Sites are very close together and we had to make sure our slide did not hit the neighbor's truck side mirror! Also not very quiet. If you don't hear boats roaming around then you can hear children playing in the multiple playgrounds or the neighbor's music playing or overall road noise. It is a good place if you just need a night or if you fish or have a boat I suppose.

Bathrooms/showers are not very convenient and are not very nice.  The shower was full of bugs (dead and alive) and though free you had to consistently keep pushing the "on" button to turn the water on for 30 second intervals.  Also, you have no choice as far as water temperature. It wasn't too cold or too hot but if you want hotter in the winter or cooler water in the summer, you don't get that option. There was also only one hook for belongings and the door wasn't secure.

There is a laundry room but it was so far from us (in the other camping loop) that we did not go to it even though we picked this place so we could take showers and do laundry.

This campground is convenient and cheap and close to town and the highway but I don't think I would stay here again unless I was desperate. It is nice and well maintained and clean but the closeness of people and the distance to amenities is a no go.

There is trash (no recycling) as well as the aforementioned showers, bathrooms and laundry. There is also a beach area, playgrounds  and boating/fishing. There is a fire pit, picnic table and full hook ups at each site for the RVs.

The website is weird because the "off" and "busy" seasons seem opposite and from other reviews they had disputes over the cost, so we weren't sure what to expect, but we paid $20 online for a Monday night and the nice office ladies didn't say anything when we were checking in.

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park Campground

    Wet

First of all, if your rig is over 10’ tall, don’t come in through Butte LaRose, there’s a bridge you won’t get across! Come in through Henderson. That being said, I wasn’t impressed. We were under the mistaken impression that they honored the Nat’l park pass and gave you 1/2 off the price. We paid a total of $36 which included the $6 online reservation fee even though we did not reserve online. We’ve never been charged this fee in any other park as a “walk in”. The men’s bathroom and shower was closed but they had a portable one set up with one shower which was in the handicapped toilet stall and only one other toilet stall and one urinal. Needless to say, you hand to wait in line even though there were only about 10 other campers there. This is a poorly maintained campground with huge potholes in the road going in and standing water everywhere. If Louisiana is going to charge me a reservation fee for a walk-in, I’ll stay in another state. The sites on the water are $42 and there is no cell service anywhere in the park. Supposedly there is wi-fi in some areas but they couldn’t tell me where that was and I never found it.

Lake End Park Campground & Marina

    Very nice camping area

I think this is a very nice camping area for both RV’s and tent camping, but it does have some minor drawbacks. There is a protected area on the lake within the park that you can launch your boat and they do have two restrooms with showers as well as washers and dryer’s to clean your clothes. Bathrooms in nearly every camping area across the country I’ve been to aren’t exactly up to home standards, but it is functional. The people working at the park have always been friendly and helpful. I like to tent camp and even the tent campsites have electrical hook ups. The truly bizarre thing about that is we are located in South Louisiana where the temperatures are absolutely brutally hot and majority of the year and yet they have a rule that clearly states you cannot have an air conditioner in your tent. And luckily, I didn’t see that the first four or five times I stayed there and no one said a word. Why in the world could you not hook up a portable AC unit in your tent considering electrical hook ups are provided and AC units make nearly no noise? Speaking of noise, the park is located in just inside a 90° curve in the highway with two sets of rumble strips in each direction. Being located practically within the city limits of Morgan city, or noise from traffic and the rumble strips doesn’t quiet down until well after midnight and picks back up again in full force around 5 AM. I couple that with the majority of the people here wanting their trucks to make the most noise possible, it’s a bit distracting and makes sleep difficult. Like all camping areas, people are going to listen to all manners and types of music but that quiet down significantly after 10 PM. my last trip about a week ago I noticed that my particular campsite was covered in fire ants that would start to build colonies within all your camping equipment left on the ground outside and they also built a major ant city underneath our tent that wasn’t an issue until I was breaking down the camp and the ants decided to scatter all over the tent inside and out. the fishing is fantastic down here and the wildlife is incredible. You will see alligators of course along with rabbits, black squirrels, osprey bald eagles as well as seagulls and pelicans given our close proximity to the gulf coast. The office has people working in it every day of the week and and there is a Coke machine at the office and they do sell 8 pound bags of ice for $2. Overall, I really like camping here and then will continue to do so as long as no one says anything about having an AC unit in my tent as I would not consider staying in a tent in South Louisiana without one.

    Attakapas Wildlife Management Area

    Great for a few nights

Permit and sign-in/out required on Louisiana WMA website. Close to a boating launch that has a bathroom and water. The site has 3 picnic tables with plenty of room for tents or rvs. About 2 miles from town, with decent service. Beautiful sunsets over the fields.

Guide to Franklin

Tent campsites near Franklin, Louisiana occupy wetland regions with extensive bayous and hardwood forests characteristic of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. The area experiences humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, with spring typically bringing higher water tables that impact accessibility at some camping areas.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Cypremort Point State Park offers excellent fishing access from its pier. "Park has fishing pier, sandy beach/swimming area, pavilions with bbq pits and cabins for rent," notes visitor Donna G.

Track walking: The public fishing pond at Lamar Dixon Expo Center features a solar-lighted paved track. According to a camper, "There is a public fishing pond with a very nice solar lighted, paved track around it. Scouts often tent camp in that area but it is big enough to accommodate everyone." This makes Lamar Dixon suitable for casual exercise during your stay.

Bird watching: Winter and spring months provide optimal bird watching at camping areas near Franklin. "Birding is good. VERY quiet in off season. Locked gate and feels safe," reports a visitor about the off-season experience at Cypremort Point.

What campers like

Peaceful holiday camping: Attakapas Wildlife Management Area offers exceptional solitude during holiday periods. "Stayed here 16 days over the Christmas/New Year's holidays and had the place to ourselves. The water is questionable, bring your own. Beautiful, clean, quiet- definitely worth the visit," shares Crystal F.

Beach access: The man-made beach at Cypremort Point provides water recreation options not commonly found near Franklin's camping areas. A visitor explains: "I like the grills and covered areas on the beach with the picnic tables. I don't like all the thick black oily mulch like substance in the water, its like quicksand and hard to swim in."

Central location: Proximity to major Louisiana cities makes tent camping near Franklin convenient for regional exploration. One camper at Lamar Dixon notes, "This is a good in between spot to pitch your tent and visit all the very cool places roun'cher," highlighting its position between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

What you should know

Limited amenities: Facilities at tent sites vary significantly by season. At Cypremort Point, "Cold outdoor showers available. Tent sites are on a man-made beach. Picnic table and grill for each site. In the off season you will not find anything open. Bring all that you'll need," advises Kelly E.

Permit requirements: When camping at Attakapas Wildlife Management Area, visitors must complete required documentation. A camper explains: "Permit and sign-in/out required on Louisiana WMA website. Close to a boating launch that has a bathroom and water."

Conflicting information: Campground status changes frequently at Cypremort Point. One reviewer states: "This is not a tent camping area so I'm not sure why its listed as such, tents aren't allowed here," while a more recent review confirms: "Five tenting Only sites. NO RV sites at this time."

Tips for camping with families

Wildlife awareness: Families should exercise caution in wetland camping areas. One camper shares: "I always worry whenever we are anywhere with possible gators so we didn't go looking and were careful at night. Im sure the locals would get a laugh outta watching me walk my dogs in any of the over grown/swampy/near water areas."

Water quality considerations: Bring adequate drinking water supplies. A camper at Attakapas WMA warns: "The water is questionable, bring your own."

Privacy limitations: Family campers should prepare for limited site privacy at some locations. A Cypremort Point visitor notes: "Campsites layout kind a weird. Day use goer can walk across your site, no privacy. Can't park vehicle by your site. Bathroom need to be updated."

Tips from RVers

Hookup configurations: RVers staying at Lamar Dixon should note the unusual power setup. "The hookups are shared between 4 sites. Think the center of a rectangle made of 4 rectangles. However, the electrical at each hookup is a large electrical breaker panel with the receptacles on the sides of the panel. There were only 2 50A receptacles at my station," reports Jonathan L.

Space constraints: Some RV spaces near Franklin have size limitations. One visitor to Lamar Dixon Expo Center notes: "Good location close to everything lots are a little small but good for a quick stay."
