What to Do
Trail riding in Mammoth Cave National Park: Direct access to multiple bridle trails from Mammoth Cave Horse Camp. The trails wind through diverse cave country terrain with water access points positioned along routes. "Tucked away on the backside of Mammoth Cave NF, Ky, you want to find this Horse Camp. Not huge and not to small, you can easily bring a small group of friends here for a private horsing around retreat," notes Shelly S.
Guided horse tours: Book rides at Double J Stables and Campground for $25-$35. "They have the BEST horses for trail rides! The guide will take you directly into Mammoth Cave National Park. They are the only guided horse trails that authorized to go into the National Park," explains Heather K.
Cave exploration: Reserve tours at the visitor center before arrival. "Reserve the all day guided tour with crawling about in small spaces for the best experience. Make sure your boots have enough tread or you won't be allowed to do the tour!" advises Dan X. from Mammoth Cave Campground.
What Campers Like
Wildlife encounters: Natural setting with abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. "Deer & turkey walk thru ur campsite! Very clean & quiet! The wildlife are very friendly!" reports Gloria J. about Mammoth Cave Campground.
Community atmosphere: Friendly camping environment with helpful neighbors. "People here were kind and trustworthy. People were charging their power stations unattended in the bathrooms. We were given extra wood by our neighbors. Other neighbors notified us when they saw us leaving stuff behind," writes Veronica S.
Water recreation: Multiple lakes for swimming and boating. "The beach is amazing and clean, the food at lodge very excellent," comments Erin R. about Barren River Lake Resort Lodge & Cottages. The resort includes beach access and boat rentals.
What You Should Know
Ferry crossing restrictions: If traveling with an RV to reach north side horse campgrounds, plan alternate routes. "If you are in a RV note that you can't go across the ferry with your rig!!! You have to go around the park to access this campground. We are so glad we realized that ahead of time and didn't have to back track," warns Bounding Around from Maple Springs Campground.
Tick prevention: Heavy tick presence in wooded areas, especially during spring and summer. "The only downside to the entire trip is that the park is infested with seed ticks and deer ticks. I was pulling ticks off of every inch of me even though I was coated in several layers of hardcore bug spray," cautions Carrie J.
Campsite reservations: Book well in advance for equestrian sites, especially during peak seasons. "This campground books 6 months out. Very hard to get a spot, but so worth it! Water front sites in cove so not a lot of boat traffic," advises Laura O. about Nolin Lake State Park.
Tips for Camping with Families
Swimming options: Multiple lakes with beaches for family swimming. "We had reservations for a cave tour dec22. We didn't stay at the campground. We parked our 40ft skoolie in the parking lot of the visitors center and slept there for 2 nights. Thanks to the park ranger who didn't make us leave and told us to enjoy our visit!" shares Jadon B.
Educational opportunities: Plan ranger-led programs at visitor centers. "Spend your day riding and then kick back at your site and relax," suggests Shelly S. about Mammoth Cave Horse Camp.
Kid-friendly amenities: Playgrounds and picnic areas available at most campgrounds. "There is a playground for younger kids to play on. While we were there the owners were fundraising so they could improve it further," notes Heather K. about Double J Stables.
Tips from RVers
Leveling challenges: Bring extra leveling blocks for uneven sites at Nolin Lake State Park Campground. "The campground had two tent camping locations and a rv area. The scenery was amazing. Highly recommend campsite 23 by the beach, it has the best view," suggests Katrina R.
Water hookup placement: Some campgrounds have unusual water hookup configurations. "My site was slightly uphill where I had to park to reach the water hookup. The water hookup is very close to the ground and leaked for me. Made it very hard to connect the hose and pressure regulator," reports Jon P. about Dad's Bluegrass Campground.
Electric options: Different amperage availability across campgrounds. "Very nice Campground. Easy pull through seats, and shower and toilet facilities are very modern and clean. We didn't find the highway noise to be too big of a deal," writes mike S.
