What to do
Fishing at Lago Linda: Lago Linda Hideaway provides fishing opportunities in their stocked lake with easy access from multiple campsites. "The trail around the lake was very nice, short but hilly so a good morning walk. It rained the first evening which led to some pretty little waterfalls the next day," notes Sarah H. about her experience at Lago Linda Hideaway.
Hiking near Buckhorn: Trails connect directly from camping areas to longer routes through surrounding forests. "We discovered the trails within the camp and they are pretty sweet," shares one visitor to the area. Buckhorn Dam Campground offers "several locations to dispose of trash. They also provided trash bags upon arrival," according to Marissa G. at Buckhorn Dam Campground.
Water activities: Cave Run Lake offers swimming and boating options throughout the warmer months. "Very clean and fun lake, close to campgrounds, boat rentals, marina, and hiking close," writes Todd C. about his visit to Cave Run Lake.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the natural separation between camping spots. "The campground was a little confusing at first because the sign says next left, when the next left is the out driveway. The camp office/store was very clean and had practical items like batteries, firestarter, snacks and ice cream for the kiddos," reports Amanda S. about her stay at Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground.
Clean facilities: Restrooms and shower buildings receive consistent positive mentions. "The bathrooms were heated which was a nice touch since it snowed the other two days I was there. Everyone I saw were very friendly (as were their pets)," shares Sarah H. from a spring camping trip.
Level campsites: Many visitors note the quality of camping pads. "The site was very easy to get to. We were on site 13 and it was nearly perfectly level from left to right. It had both 30 and 50 amp hookups and water (about 35psi on pressure)," describes Marissa G.
What you should know
Weather considerations: Spring camping brings variable conditions. "Since it was so warm, we took a dip in the lake. Our site was spacious and pretty, with plenty of room for our two tents and a hammock. I will say we found a few lone star ticks on our dog," warns Lena L. about tick prevention.
Reservation requirements: Busy seasons require advance planning for yurt camping in Pine Ridge. "We stayed in the red roof cabin which was small but pretty awesome. Full kitchen, bathroom, gas fireplace heater and loft w/three beds. Then there's the porch overlooking the little lake," explains Shelly S.
Off-season changes: Some campgrounds modify services during cooler months. "Twin Knobs is walk up only in October. We got there as quick as we could and are glad we did as we were able to grab an awesome site," advises a camper at Twin Knobs Recreation Area.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Look for campgrounds with child-friendly amenities. "Hands down the best playground for kids we have seen in a campground. A ton of kiddos for kids to play with and a great area for their bikes, etc.," shares Marissa G.
Safe swimming areas: Several campgrounds feature designated swimming spots. "I went during late March and will definitely go again when it's warmer to enjoy swimming in the lake!" mentions Sarah H.
Entertainment options: Family campgrounds often offer multiple recreation choices. "They have a small fishing pond, swimming pool, basketball court, and a playground. They are very close to Natural Bridge/Red River Gorge area," notes Christy W. about 4 Guys RV Park at Red River Gorge.
Tips from RVers
Hookup distances: Electric connections may require extension cords. "The only issue was that some of the sites were around 50 ft from the electric hook up. Thankfully we were able to switch spots instead of renting an extension cord," advises autumn L.
Site selection strategy: RV campers recommend researching specific sites before booking. "You camp on rock sites so it drains great if it rains. The sites are kinda secluded from one another by tree and bush lines," explains Kellie Dawn T.
Shade availability: Newer campgrounds may lack mature trees. "My only complaint, and I will say it is a very small complaint — it must be a relatively new park because there are no shade trees. This minor flaw will not stop me from returning!" shares Raven M.
