Taylorsville Lake State Park offers designated equestrian camping sites that connect directly to horseback riding trails. The primitive camping area provides spaces specifically designed for horse trailers with proper spacing between animal areas. Beyond the equestrian facilities, the park features diverse camping options including RV sites with hookups and primitive tent camping. Sites throughout the campground connect to multiple trail systems that showcase the rolling hills and wooded landscapes characteristic of central Kentucky.
What to do
Fishing and boating activities: Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground offers access to the 3,050-acre Taylorsville Lake with multiple fishing spots. "We camped there for three days and used it as a 'home base' while we explored Louisville, bourbon country, etc. We also fished one evening on Taylorsville Lake, though it was a drive from our campsite," notes Sara U.
Explore bourbon distilleries: My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground serves as an ideal base for visiting nearby distilleries. "Located near Makers Mark and Jim Beam distilleries. So lots to do around the area and come back to a peaceful, picturesque setting," says Bethany W. The campground is approximately 25 miles from Lawrenceburg.
Hiking trails: Jefferson Memorial Forest offers miles of trails ranging from easy to challenging. "Lots of trails ranging from 1.5 to 13.0 miles through gorgeous mixed forest of old and new growth deciduous and coniferous hardwoods," explains Robert P. The orange trail near the campground provides a shorter, more secluded hiking option.
What campers like
Spacious equestrian sites: Kentucky Horse Park Campground provides extensive facilities for horses and their owners about 30 miles from Lawrenceburg. "Taking the horses out here was a wonderful experience, it was great having so many different trails to go on in order to not only train the new horses how to trail ride, but also take the more experienced horses on tougher trails," shares Jill R.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the well-maintained facilities at Taylorsville Lake. "We were near the restroom facilities which were very clean. The camping area was recently mowed. Plenty of parking for guests and tents," reports Heather K.
Wooded, private sites: My Old Kentucky Home provides tree coverage that creates natural separation between sites. "Smaller campground that has huge beautiful trees. Sites are spaced out which has been really nice. Feels more like camping. Very shaded," notes Bethany W.
What you should know
Site selection matters: At Taylorsville Lake, primitive sites vary significantly in quality. "Most of the sites were really big, and there was plenty of space and trees in between. We stayed at site P02, but I don't recommend that specific site. It was probably the worst site in the primitive camp. It was far from flat, and the space provided for the picnic table was pretty much unusable," advises Cassandra C.
Seasonal staffing limitations: During off-peak times, park services may be limited. "The biggest overall issue is the lack of staffing. We got in shortly after 7PM and there was no ranger or staff to be found to get firewood," reports Justin S. at Taylorsville Lake.
Airport noise: At Jefferson Memorial Forest, expect regular air traffic despite the natural setting. "Unfortunately it's in the departure path of Louisville's airport, so be prepared for once-a-minute takeoffs if the airport is using its southbound runways for departures. UPS releases about 100 planes from around 3-5am," warns Derek P.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Sites near recreational areas provide entertainment for children. "We camped there in July for my son's birthday party. Playground was close and perfect for everyone to go run and play," shares Heather K. about Taylorsville Lake State Park.
Historical sites: My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground offers educational opportunities alongside camping. "My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground is a small campground, clean, and friendly staff. There is a golf course on site. Plenty to see, including My Old Kentucky Home, the tour was amazing," states John D.
Group sites for family gatherings: Jefferson Memorial Forest offers larger sites for family reunions or gatherings. "The group sites are fairly large and have running water and compost latrines. Parking is not on site but only a short walk," notes Chris R.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds in the region require leveling equipment. "Make sure to have levelers to handle 7+ inches," advises Bethany W. about My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground.
Hookup access: At Taylorsville Lake, plan for variable distances to utilities. "Sites are a bit uneven and water and electric is about 40 feet away," notes Bethany W. about a nearby campground, suggesting similar preparation for Taylorsville Lake.
Campsite dimensions: Check site specifications carefully before booking. "Very small campground and narrow roads. Many sites were not level and some sites were very short so make sure you review the site description," warns M&P M. about campgrounds in the region.
