    Eisenhower State Park Campground

Remote quiet camping with nice facilities

Spent the weekend here and glad we had reservations prior as it was full even though it was the end of October and the weather wasn't the best.  Close to Melvern and the railroad tracks so if the sound of trains all night isn't your thing, then pick somewhere else.  Excellent clean restrooms and showers.  Great views of the lake from many spots. Also good cell service.  Only 8 miles from Lyndon where there are restaurants, gas and a dollar store although no grocery store.

Primitive camping was small and exposed, but fun

The fivestar loop is decent for tent camping. The sites were fairly small and jammed next to each other, and half of them didn't have great tree cover, but they all have a nice firepit and picnic table.  It was super duper windy off of the lake for us, so be ready for wind.  Bathrooms were nice and clean and the staff were very nice.

    Nice stop with amenities

I’m in my 30s traveling solo and this stop was a great place to regroup and take advantage of their amenities like shower, laundry, etc. The bathrooms were clean and the staff was very friendly. If you are traveling with kids this is a terrific place to stop because there are lots of things to keep kids busy like a playground and pool. The sites aren’t very private and road noise from the nearby highway can be heard throughout the night if you’re tent camping but it didn’t really bother me.

    Tent camper

Lots of space and good fishing. Secure camping and clean on site bathroom facilities. Close enough to town for convenience but far enough away you get to see a lot of stars.

    Off the beaten path

A couple miles down a secluded drive, nestled back in the woods right on the lake. Lots of trees, nice shower house. Camp host is friendly and laid back. Pet friendly, well lit. Our family felt safe.

Beautiful sunsets. Water is a little muddy but good for fishing. I would recommend for a family getaway or a fishing trip.

Campground Too Close to the Railroad Tracks

Most KOA campgrounds I have been to are exceptional with great sites for all types of camping. However, there are a couple of them that have one or two sites that leave you scratching your head. We were supposed to camp at site 18, but it was not level and had tire ruts all the way to the back of the site. There was nowhere to set up our tent without it being uncomfortable throughout the night. With that said, we moved over to site 19, which was level. The tent sites are small for the tenters and there is little to no shade.

The good things about the sites are that they have water and electricity. There is even a night light and a place to charge your electronic devices. There is a fire ring but no lantern hanger.

The bath house is modern and up to date; however, the shower dressing area has got to be the smallest I have EVER seen at a campground. I estimated the dressing area to be about 18” x 24”. I’m not a math whiz, but even I can figure out that an average sized person would have difficulty moving around in the dressing area.

I might give it a higher rating if we were camping in an RV or even in our teardrop camper, but another problem was the noise. I was warned that there would be a train passing through, and the person I spoke to offered to throw in a pair of ear plugs and a night mask. Now I know why. There was a light from a nearby cabin lighting the whole tenting area, and the trains were one right behind the other… ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!! Every thirty minutes or so(could have been every twenty minutes, but I’m not sure), a train passed by. It wouldn’t be so bad, but it was LOUD!!!!!!!

We were on our way to Colorado, and the next time we are passing through, I will make sure to skip this campground.

    Kansas City West-Lawrence KOA

A great little KOA campground with lots of amenities.

The staff is very nice, the camp is clean the bathrooms are clean the laundry is clean the pool is clean overall a very pleasant little camp. Please see attached video and pictures for more details.

The only two negatives are one there are probably not enough shade trees and two there is a train that comes by every couple of hours.

Guide to Lyndon

Pomona State Park and Eisenhower State Park sit in the Flint Hills region near Lyndon, Kansas, where the terrain features rolling grasslands punctuated by wooded creek valleys. The area receives approximately 38 inches of annual rainfall, creating ideal conditions for tent, RV, and yurt camping across multiple campgrounds. Winter camping temperatures can drop below freezing, with summer highs regularly exceeding 90°F.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: 7,000-acre lake access at Eisenhower State Park Campground provides extensive fishing. "The lake is almost 7,000 acres so our kayak exploring only covered a small portion," notes John G., who visited in August. The park maintains several boat ramps with nearby camping spots.

Winter primitive camping: Pomona State Park Campground offers unique off-season experiences with fewer visitors. "We stayed in one of the campgrounds with undesignated primitive spots. Found a nice place to park right on the lake. It was super quiet, being winter," shares Courtney S., highlighting the peaceful atmosphere during colder months.

Swimming beaches: Perry State Park Campground maintains designated swimming areas with sandy shorelines. "We had a wonderful stay! Wonderful pull through spots, great views, and closer to the boat ramp!" reports Caitlin R., who appreciated the lake access combined with practical campsite features.

What campers like

Spacious, shaded sites: Pomona State Park receives praise for its generous, tree-covered campsites. "The campground here is covered in trees, Awesome. We're in a Montana high country 384br, 41' fifth wheel. Its a beautiful park, right on Pomona lake," writes Ty A., indicating the park can accommodate larger rigs while maintaining natural features.

Yurt camping near Lyndon: Hillsdale State Park offers yurt accommodations about 45 minutes from Lyndon, providing a comfortable alternative to tent camping. "This campground is close to home for us, but we love it as a quick get away. It has beautiful, tree-covered campsites that offer direct access to the lake," says Jason W., describing the park's appeal for overnight stays.

Pet-friendly policies: Pomona State Park welcomes dogs with flexible leash rules. "We camp with our 3 dogs each time and never put them on a leash. Rangers informed us as long as they stay in your site, they're not strict about it," explains Joshua M., demonstrating the park's accommodating approach to pets.

What you should know

Train noise considerations: When planning yurt camping trips around Lyndon, Kansas, note that some nearby campgrounds experience regular train disturbances. At Kansas City West-Lawrence KOA, LauraJane B. reports: "This is a lovely campsite but we'll sadly never stay here again - because trains passed by really loudly all night long - it finally stopped at about 5am."

Site selection strategy: Choose interior spots at Pomona State Park to avoid vehicle traffic. "I recommend staying at a loop as far from the marina as possible, and get an interior spot. Vehicles were driving by all night!" advises Derek S., pointing out how location within the campground affects the camping experience.

Variable amenities: Campground facilities range from basic to well-equipped. "Spent the weekend here and glad we had reservations prior as it was full even though it was the end of October and the weather wasn't the best. Excellent clean restrooms and showers," Michelle H. notes about Eisenhower State Park, highlighting its popularity even in shoulder season.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Carbolyn Park offers family-centered amenities. "29 sites total, 26 electric ($16), 3 primitive ($12), boat ramp, dump station, shower-houses, playground," lists JC C., detailing the facilities available for families with children.

Small lake appeal: Lone Star Lake Park provides a manageable setting for family outings. "Great little lake. Good fishing, great locations for kayaking and paddle boarding. the camp can get crowded quick and it's a toss up who will be around and how well behaved. there is a park for this kids and a great swim beach in the summer," explains Adam M.

Offseason scheduling: Consider visiting during shoulder seasons for a quieter experience. "Enjoyed a nice cool weekend of fall camping. Site a little off level, nothing a few blocks or boards couldn't solve," shares Dan & Penny F. about their Pomona State Park experience, noting how seasonal timing affects camping conditions.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling preparation: Bring leveling blocks when yurt camping near Lyndon, Kansas or staying in an RV. "30 amps of clean 122 vac, water tucked in between two pine trees that blocked the view of the sites to the left snd right of us," notes Dan & Penny F. at Pomona State Park, mentioning both the electrical service quality and site positioning.

Big rig accessibility: Eisenhower State Park accommodates larger vehicles with spacious sites. "This was our first visit and we chose a campsite on-line. The COE has done an admirable job developing this lakeside area for plentiful campsites and decent shade," John G. explains, indicating the thoughtful design for various RV sizes.

Seasonal crowds: Plan for busier conditions during peak periods. "We were in the Heart Stays loop. It was level and beautifully shaded. Thursday night we were the only ones in the loop, however it was near the boat ramps and there was a lot of vehicle traffic all the time. Friday night the campground filled up," shares Janice O. about her Pomona State Park experience.
