    Howell Station

    Large spacious campground

Well maintained campground with mature shade trees. Gravel sites, a little bit of leveling required. Poor Verizon cell signal, no internet signal. Not much natural privacy between sites, but sites were well spaced apart. Paved trail nice for biking and walking. Fishing nearby and the Dutch themed town of Pella is a short drive and a must see. Bathrooms and showers were nice, clean. Handicap camp site and bathhouse available. Firewood for sale at front gate. The potable water available at the dump station was clear and good for drinking. Dump station is easily accessible. Dumpsters were positioned around the campground. Staff was friendly. The night we stayed, there was a severe weather threat, and the staff, at the end of the night, had unlocked the storm shelters (utility area in the middle of the bathhouses) should the need arise. We ended up having to seek shelter because of a tornado warning.

    Lakeside Co Park

Nice lake, but run down campsites.

First, there is no dump station! All sites have water and electricity with 20, 30, and 60 amp plugs. The sites are 20 dollars. The campsites located near the entrance are pull-through but need maintenance. The campsites along the lake will support short to medium length RVs or trailers, and all are back in. As of this posting, all are not level and in poor condition. The city of Huneston, Iowa is a few minutes away and has several gas stations and a grocery store.

    Walnut Woods State Park Campground

Comfortable Camping Convenient To Des Moines

Walnut Woods is conveniently located 25 minutes outside of downtown Des Moines. Sites are paved and mostly level, although we did have to throw a couple of blocks under one side of our TT tires. Most sites feature 20/30/50 electric, a fire ring and a picnic table. Some also have water and sewer hookups. Sites are relatively small and close together, so get comfortable looking into your neighbors’ site/camper depending on how your site is oriented. The road around the campground is paved, but very narrow. We had to ask our neighbor across the street to temporarily move their tow vehicle so that we’d have adequate room to back into our site.

There is a bathroom, trash dumpsters, and a dump station with both potable and tank cleanout water spigots. There are trail heads near the campground that follow along the raccoon river for almost 2 miles. It was very muddy when we camped here, so we had to turn around about 1.5 miles into our hike and backtrack due to an impassible area.

3 bars of T-Mobile and 2 bars of AT&T were more than sufficient for internet browsing and streaming.

    Adventureland Campground

    Parking more than camping

I stayed at Adventureland for the summer months and had no issues. The staff was very helpful, plenty of laundry/restrooms throughout the campground and pretty clean overall. Concrete pads with full hook ups (30/50 amp, water and sewage) make setting up quick. Tent camping is an option in the back of the campground. Nature is not really the draw of this campground, convenience is more the approach. With a theme park on one side and a casino on the other, both in walking distance. It’s more of a park and party place hahaha

    Des Moines West KOA Holiday

    Nice modern KOA

Large modern KOA with sites to accommodate all sizes of rigs and also tent campers. Gravel sites require some leveling. Not much privacy between sites nor shade. Bathhouses were clean and private. Laundry available. Off leash dog area available. Convenient to John Wayne’s birthplace and covered bridges of Madison County. Bulk propane tanks were on site for winter campers. Camper cabins available. Small store with Hunt Brothers pizza to order. Gathering room on site and pedal car racetrack. Verizon cell signal was good. Garbage dumpster and dump station on site.

    Timberline Campground

    Beautiful forested overnight stay

We called ahead to see if they had sites available that night. Arrived just before the office closed at 7pm. They were ready for us and escorted us to our pull-through full-hookups site near the front of the campground. This is a huge property but laid out in different sections that each have their own flavor. The pull-throughs near the front are level, gravel pads with grass all around. Other areas are forested and some are hilly. Full-hookups worked fine. We stayed in site 121, which faces an open grassy area backed by a little forest that echoed with beautiful wildlife sounds in the evening. There are no campground lights except at the restrooms, so it’s great for stargazing! The restrooms were good.

    Yellow Banks County Park

Best of the 4 Polk County Iowa Parks

Wonderful trails, lots of space.  Access to DM River, has nice pond, playgrounds, just a beautiful area.  Fishing not the greatest, Pond is silted to about 9ft deep, have caught few small bass, bluegill.  Never tried the river here, but is known for big cats.  Camp sites are best around, large flat white rock cinder size area with picnic table, fire ring.  Sites are well spaced.  Shaded.   Double lane dump station.  Close to home, can usually get site without reservation, IF you roll in on Wed.  By Thurs night, it's full.  Few reservables, 90% i'd say are first come.  The way it should be in my opinion.

    Eagle Ridge RV Park

    Lovely campground just off I-35

Great place for a quick overnight or longer stay. We were there in very early spring so could not use the swimming pool or small lake but the walks around the area were very nice. We stayed in a long FHU pull-through (the one shown in the picture above) in a Class A. Close to the interstate but not noisy.

    Adventureland Campground

    Nice site

After some confusion with booking (office hours are until 7pm, confirmation email said 9pm) we were able to get ahold of the operations manager at the park who helped us. Pull through paved 50 amp sites, with water and sewage. Picnic table for use. Within view of Adventureland so it was cool to see the rides lit up at night as we parked. Clean park. Will definitely stop by again when we aren’t just passing through!

Guide to Woodburn

RV camping near Woodburn, Iowa offers convenient options within 30-40 miles of this small south-central Iowa community. The region features gently rolling farmland with elevations ranging from 900-1200 feet above sea level. Most campgrounds remain accessible during three seasons, with many winterizing water systems from November through March.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Griffs Valley View RV Park in Altoona, campers can fish in the on-site pond. "There is a really nice pond for fishing that has some bluegills. The water is very clean," notes reviewer Willy W.

Biking trails: Access the 25-mile Chichaqua Valley Trail directly from camping areas. "Nicely paved 25 mile long biking and walking Chichaqua Valley Trail runs right between the campground and the campground office," reports Anthony W.

State Fair access: Campgrounds in the region provide convenient bases for Iowa State Fair attendance. "We stayed here to go to the Iowa State Fair. It was easy to park here and catch a shuttle to the fair," mentions Brenda B. about River Oaks RV Park.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the well-maintained bathrooms and showers. "The main lodge has very clean restrooms and showers with hot water! Recommended," writes Paula O. about Griffs Valley View RV Park.

Level sites: Many campgrounds feature concrete pads that accommodate larger rigs. At Lakeside Casino RV Park, "All the spaces are pulled through. It is very clean. There is full hook up for water, electric and sewer. All spaces are paved," reports reviewer Vita M.

Quiet atmosphere: Despite proximity to highways, several parks maintain peaceful environments. "It was really in a good perimeter of trees and lots of shade and level camp spots. We thought this was a nice little spot and a great price," notes Lee D. about Shady Brook Camping & RV Adventures.

What you should know

Hookup considerations: Some sites require extended connections. At Ted's RV Park in Decatur City, visitors appreciate the full hookup options. "Long, level pull thru's and back ins, playground, dog walk, DELICIOUS on site restaurant. Clubhouse with immaculate laundry and individual showers, everything is new and cashless," explains Elizabeth S.

Site conditions: Concrete pads may have maintenance issues at some locations. "The concrete in our site was in poor condition, it had crumbled leaving a dip in the pad. The cable didn't work, but electric and water had no issues," reports Renee H.

Highway noise: Proximity to interstates affects some campgrounds more than others. Kelly reports about Shady Brook: "You could literally throw a rock from the entrance and hit a passing semi. Would be a possible extended stay for construction folks. Not for any peace and quite camping."

Tips for camping with families

Recreation spaces: Some parks offer dedicated facilities for children. Kandace F. notes that Griffs Valley View has "a small playground. And horses with hay to fees them! Good price and definitely will visit again."

Swimming options: Seasonal swimming facilities are available at select locations. "We were there in very early spring so could not use the swimming pool or small lake but the walks around the area were very nice," shares Patricia O. about Eagle Ridge RV Park.

Accessibility features: Certain campgrounds accommodate mobility needs better than others. "I am in a wheelchair and this park allows me to move around freely," mentions a reviewer at Lakeside Casino RV Park.

Tips from RVers

Winter camping: Year-round options exist with varying levels of service. "Spent the winter here, they are very good at keeping snow and ice under control," notes Jo E. about Griffs Valley View RV Park.

Road trip stopovers: Several parks specialize in convenient overnight stays. "This campground is close to I35 and makes a great stop on road trips if you're heading south! Affordable and quiet," explains Tori K. about Buffalo Run RV Park.

Arrival protocols: Check-in procedures vary by location. Jim C. notes at River Oaks: "Sites are gravel and it looked like most campers had to use blocks. Free WiFi was good; we streamed TV. It did freeze a few times but hard to tell if it was the WiFi or the provider."
