    Howell Station

    Large spacious campground

Well maintained campground with mature shade trees. Gravel sites, a little bit of leveling required. Poor Verizon cell signal, no internet signal. Not much natural privacy between sites, but sites were well spaced apart. Paved trail nice for biking and walking. Fishing nearby and the Dutch themed town of Pella is a short drive and a must see. Bathrooms and showers were nice, clean. Handicap camp site and bathhouse available. Firewood for sale at front gate. The potable water available at the dump station was clear and good for drinking. Dump station is easily accessible. Dumpsters were positioned around the campground. Staff was friendly. The night we stayed, there was a severe weather threat, and the staff, at the end of the night, had unlocked the storm shelters (utility area in the middle of the bathhouses) should the need arise. We ended up having to seek shelter because of a tornado warning.

    Lakeside Co Park

Nice lake, but run down campsites.

First, there is no dump station! All sites have water and electricity with 20, 30, and 60 amp plugs. The sites are 20 dollars. The campsites located near the entrance are pull-through but need maintenance. The campsites along the lake will support short to medium length RVs or trailers, and all are back in. As of this posting, all are not level and in poor condition. The city of Huneston, Iowa is a few minutes away and has several gas stations and a grocery store.

    Walnut Woods State Park Campground

Comfortable Camping Convenient To Des Moines

Walnut Woods is conveniently located 25 minutes outside of downtown Des Moines. Sites are paved and mostly level, although we did have to throw a couple of blocks under one side of our TT tires. Most sites feature 20/30/50 electric, a fire ring and a picnic table. Some also have water and sewer hookups. Sites are relatively small and close together, so get comfortable looking into your neighbors’ site/camper depending on how your site is oriented. The road around the campground is paved, but very narrow. We had to ask our neighbor across the street to temporarily move their tow vehicle so that we’d have adequate room to back into our site.

There is a bathroom, trash dumpsters, and a dump station with both potable and tank cleanout water spigots. There are trail heads near the campground that follow along the raccoon river for almost 2 miles. It was very muddy when we camped here, so we had to turn around about 1.5 miles into our hike and backtrack due to an impassible area.

3 bars of T-Mobile and 2 bars of AT&T were more than sufficient for internet browsing and streaming.

    Timberline Campground

    Beautiful forested overnight stay

We called ahead to see if they had sites available that night. Arrived just before the office closed at 7pm. They were ready for us and escorted us to our pull-through full-hookups site near the front of the campground. This is a huge property but laid out in different sections that each have their own flavor. The pull-throughs near the front are level, gravel pads with grass all around. Other areas are forested and some are hilly. Full-hookups worked fine. We stayed in site 121, which faces an open grassy area backed by a little forest that echoed with beautiful wildlife sounds in the evening. There are no campground lights except at the restrooms, so it’s great for stargazing! The restrooms were good.

    Yellow Banks County Park

Best of the 4 Polk County Iowa Parks

Wonderful trails, lots of space.  Access to DM River, has nice pond, playgrounds, just a beautiful area.  Fishing not the greatest, Pond is silted to about 9ft deep, have caught few small bass, bluegill.  Never tried the river here, but is known for big cats.  Camp sites are best around, large flat white rock cinder size area with picnic table, fire ring.  Sites are well spaced.  Shaded.   Double lane dump station.  Close to home, can usually get site without reservation, IF you roll in on Wed.  By Thurs night, it's full.  Few reservables, 90% i'd say are first come.  The way it should be in my opinion.

    Eagle Ridge RV Park

    Lovely campground just off I-35

Great place for a quick overnight or longer stay. We were there in very early spring so could not use the swimming pool or small lake but the walks around the area were very nice. We stayed in a long FHU pull-through (the one shown in the picture above) in a Class A. Close to the interstate but not noisy.

    Timberline Campground

    Month Family/Work Camp

Great, safe, and quiet campground. Beautiful site on a pond, clean bath houses, cool weekend amenities, and since we came in October, pretty empty after Labor Day during the week.

Owners very easy to work with, propane refill was easy, and payment schedule was convenient.

Overall, would 100% come back to this campground in the future and would love to see it in the summer!

    Lakeside Casino RV Park

    No frills clean campground

All the spaces are pulled through. It is very clean. There is full hook up for water, electric and sewer. All spaces are paved. There are picnic tables scattered throughout the park. If you are here to gamble, you will love it. If you are here to rest, you will love it. My wife and I feel safe in this park. I am in a wheelchair and this park allows me to move around freely.

    Prairie Ridge

Prairie Ridge has some nice wild flowers and a good view of Lake Rathbun

Lake Rathbun is a destination for boaters and campers in the State of Iowa. The Army Corps of Engineers operates and maintains several facilities around the lake. Prairie Ridge campground is one of those facilities.

The campsites are good. They have a fire pit, a place to hang food to keep away from raccoons, electricity, and a nice gravel pad for your vehicle or camper. It has modern toilets and some of the campsites have a nice overlook of the lake.

What stands out at this campground is the prairie grass and all of the wild flowers. It is a nice weekend getaway.

What to do

Hiking trails: Hickory Hills Park features wooded paths with historical significance. "This is a great little park just east of New Virginia, Iowa. The hiking trails are pretty easy going through the forest and then opening up next to old Native American burial mounds. This is really a great place to pitch a tent," notes camper Matt S. at Hickory Hills Park.

Fishing opportunities: Lake Rathbun near Honey Creek Resort provides excellent fishing access. "The fishing is also really good, we generally kayak and catch a lot of crappie, bass, and catfish," shares Willy W. at Honey Creek Resort.

Swimming options: Several parks offer swimming during summer months. "The beach is just outside the hotel and has a huge water park which is a lot of fun to play on. They also have a really nice indoor water park with a slide," adds Willy W. about Honey Creek Resort's water features.

What campers like

Level sites: Many RV parks feature level, well-maintained camping pads. "RV park is relatively quiet and easy to get into. Easy on and off to the interstate," notes a camper at Lakeside Casino RV Park.

Peaceful environment: Eagle Ridge RV Park provides a tranquil setting despite highway proximity. "Small campground with available spot with 2 days notice. Peaceful sites. Grounds very well kept. One of the best experiences on a site close to the 35, but far enough away you wouldn't know it," shares Sean & Holly H. at Eagle Ridge RV Park.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain well-kept bathrooms and common areas. "Made a quick trip here to see how the new puppy likes camping. Nice size campground, sites have good spacing and full hookups that were installed with some thought. Bath house & laundry are complete. Very nice and spotless," notes Jim C. at River Oaks RV Park.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Some parks fill quickly during peak season. "Two hour notice! Super nice hosts and very helpful getting us settled in our spot. Very nice and neat Campground! We will definitely be back!" mentions Marla A. about Eagle Ridge RV Park's reservation process.

Seasonal availability: Several parks operate on limited schedules. Eagle Ridge RV Park operates from March 1 to November 30, while others like Honey Creek Resort remain open year-round.

Surface conditions: Site surfaces vary between parks. "All the spaces are paved," notes one camper at Lakeside Casino RV Park, while Jim C. observes at River Oaks RV Park that "Sites are gravel and it looked like most campers had to use blocks."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some parks offer dedicated play areas for children. "Terrific small town RV park in Iowa. Long, level pull thru's and back ins, playground, dog walk, DELICIOUS on site restaurant," mentions Elizabeth S. at Ted's RV Park.

Indoor activities: For rainy days, consider parks with indoor facilities. "Indoor waterpark: Probably geared to the 4-10 crowd. Only one bigger slide, lazy river, hot tub, pool with some balance platforms and a rope and a basketball hoop," notes Mia L. about Honey Creek Resort's amenities.

Free camping options: Budget-conscious families can find no-cost sites. "We stayed two night at this campground. Arrived late and just filled out the registration form. They have fire pits and picnic tables. They also have two clean pit toilets. You can stay 14 days free I think," shares Aliyah B. about Hickory Hills Park.

Tips from RVers

Hookup positioning: Pay attention to utility placement when setting up. "Sites have good spacing and full hookups that were installed with some thought. Only used one stinky slinky, could have hooked up water with a 6' hose, and the electrical was near the back of the site," notes Jim C. about River Oaks RV Park.

Accessibility considerations: Some parks offer accommodations for campers with mobility needs. "I am in a wheelchair and this park allows me to move around freely," reports a camper at Buffalo Run RV Park.

Wi-Fi quality: Internet access varies between locations. "Free WiFi was good; we streamed tv. It did freeze a few times but hard to tell if it was the WiFi or the provider," mentions Jim C. at River Oaks RV Park.
