    Johnny Appleseed Campground

    Looked like a ghost town

This small, well-kept Campground is a Fort Wayne city park surrounded by industrial & commercial businesses. The Park is clean with the most modern, clean shower/bath house I’ve seen. Unfortunately, the restroom is located across the street from the campground. The sites were occupied by large RVs but we only saw 2 people sitting outside - no campfires, no cooking, no campers. This was just an over night stopover for us so we didn’t care. I suppose this Campground is used by seasonal workers who just sleep & eat dinner there at the end of their workday. The Campground is never dark with streetlights and and the ambient light from surrounding businesses. I’m sure this campground serves a purpose, just not my purpose. This is definitely NOT a destination.

    Air conditioning in the bathrooms

Very nice campground with level sites and air conditioned bathrooms! That is amazing in the summer. They have trails that are a nice walk for the dogs and a pond to catch and release fish.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Sauder Village Campground

    Fun with Kids

This was a great campground. VERY clean, nice bathrooms with showers. Ice and Wood easily available. We stayed with four kiddos in a tent spot across from a cool plash pad, a little lake to fish in and close to running water. Only reason this campground doesn’t get five stars is because of noisy trucks/highway noise, and a freight train which drives often at night. There is also a farm near the tenting spots with a rooster. Not the best place for sleeping, but would totally go back!

    Pokagon State Park Campground

    One of Indiana's original parks.

Pokagon was one of the first Indiana state parks, so there's some history here! One of my favorite memories is the toboggan run, which FYI, is seasonal. It's a ton of fun for the whole family. Also, in the winter, there's sledding, ice fishing and cross country skiing. There's a few trails and swimming and boating in the lake in the summer. The campground is standard and has a bathhouse and fire pits at each site (both electric and non-electric). There's a nice Inn as well, if you need a non campgroud place to stay in the winter. It's a great easy trip, even from Chicago. So, come winter or summer!

    Pokagon State Park Campground

    Pokagon State Park

Pokagon State Park has an excellent state park campground. Sites are in a well wooded area situated on 5 different loops (1 non-electric, 4 electric). Many sites are flat (good for tent camping) while others are slightly rolling hills (helps breakup the sites a bit). There is a lot to do in the park including many trails, horse riding (horse stable on site), and lake swimming on a nicely improved beach. Only cons are no full hook up and the fire rings/grills could be improved.

    Pic-A-Spot Campground

Former pick a spot now it's jt's lakeside campground I think

We have a blast!!!!! Bring your boat or watercraft! Plenty of lakefront camping spots on the barbie chain of lakes. Several (deep, clean) lakes hooked together by channels. Also hook into that big bass or musky!! It's crowded, pretty quiet usually, no showers or running water bathroom facilities. But the view...

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

Exceptionally clean campsites, helpful hosts, variety of activities, super clean private bathrooms/showers

The hosts are terrific: the campsites and fire pits are immediately cleaned, the hosts checked us in remotely (saved us a trip to the office), provided tips for getting quality firewood, cleaned the bathrooms regularly even during a busy holiday weekend.

The campsites are a bit small, but fortunately the other campers were friendly and helpful. Some of the non-electric sites were used by RVs running generators all day and night, so that was a bummer for those of us hoping non-electric would mean more quiet.

The bathrooms were scrupulously clean and always available without a line.

Three minor complaints: vault toilets instead of bathrooms in the non-electric area, only one gray water dump on the entire south side of the lake, the park lacks much in the way of hiking (but does have boating, fishing, etc.)

Guide to Spencerville

Chain O'Lakes State Park offers campers access to nine connecting lakes in northeast Indiana, with Spencerville just a short drive away. The park spans 2,718 acres of wooded terrain with elevation changes unusual for this part of the state. Winter temperatures typically range from 15-30°F, while summer brings 70-85°F days with moderate humidity levels.

What to do

Water activities on multiple lakes: Chain O'Lakes State Park provides opportunities for paddling between interconnected waterways using rented watercraft. According to one visitor, "There are trail, beaches, boats... so many things to do" at nearby Pokagon State Park, which offers similar water recreation options.

Historical exploration: Visit Sauder Village near Archbold for an educational day trip. A camper at Sauder Village Campground noted, "The historical village is an easy 10 minute stroll and worth visiting!" Another camper added, "They often have theme weekends and special ticket pricing thru Groupon."

Wildlife viewing: Observe local wildlife including eagles at Kil-So-Quah. One visitor to Kil-So-Quah - J. Edward Roush Lake shared, "Good bird watching spot. Lots of eagles." The area's lakes attract diverse bird species throughout the seasons.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campgrounds in the area maintain high standards for bathrooms and shower facilities. A visitor to Johnny Appleseed Campground stated, "They have the best bathrooms that I have ever seen in the campgrounds. You can even look out at the skylight at the sky... It's a beautiful bathroom very well kept."

Family-friendly amenities: Many campgrounds offer features specifically designed for families with children. At Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park, a camper reported, "Have created a tradition in our family to go to Yogi every year at the end of summer! It's a great place to swim, ride bikes, do crafts, play bingo, and a wide variety of fun activities for the whole family!"

Variety of camping options: From basic tent sites to yurt camping near Spencerville, Indiana, options exist for every preference. A visitor to Harrison Lake State Park Campground shared, "We rented a yurt as a local weekend escape. Our kids loved the yurt. It was nice with a little mini fridge and 4 double beds."

What you should know

Booking requirements: Popular sites fill quickly, especially during summer months. A visitor to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park noted, "If you are planning a summer weekend you have to book wayyyyy in advance due to demand."

Privacy levels vary: Some campgrounds offer more seclusion than others. A camper at Johnny Appleseed Campground observed, "Most of the sites are very close and no vegetation to allow any privacy. On the positive side, the bathrooms were very nice and clean."

Seasonal considerations: Not all facilities remain open year-round. At Angola/Hogback Lake KOA, a visitor shared, "We spent this past week at Hogback Lake KOA. It is late in the season so much of the park was closed for the season, but we had a great year round site."

Noise factors: Some campgrounds experience various noise sources. At Kil-So-Quah - J. Edward Roush Lake, one camper mentioned, "There is gunfire noise from the range across the lake. Not bad though."

Tips for camping with families

Seek out specialized yurt camping: Spencerville, Indiana area offers unique yurt accommodations for families wanting comfort with outdoor access. As one visitor to Harrison Lake State Park noted, "We rented a yurt as a local weekend escape. Our kids loved the yurt... Campground showers and bathrooms are clean."

Look for water play options: Pools and splash pads provide refreshing alternatives when lake swimming isn't preferred. A camper at Sauder Village mentioned, "The fenced in splash pad was our main draw. However the hotel is awesome and campers are allowed usage of their pool and game room."

Consider weekday visits: For families seeking quieter experiences, mid-week stays often mean fewer crowds. At Kil-So-Quah, a visitor observed, "During the weekends it gets packed... During the week it's great. Hardly anyone here and so peaceful."

Check playground locations: Some campgrounds have multiple play areas. A visitor to Johnny Appleseed noted, "Bathrooms are nice, and there is also a playground!" positioning families with children to select sites near these amenities.

Tips from RVers

Site selection priorities: Full hookup availability varies between campgrounds. A camper at Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday reported, "We had a great year round site. A little bit of road noise, but water, electric, sewer, cable TV all worked great."

Leveling considerations: Some campgrounds have uneven sites requiring additional setup time. At Kil-So-Quah, a visitor noted, "Electric sites are small and not private," indicating RVers should bring leveling blocks and be prepared for tight spaces.

Hookup limitations: Not all sites provide full services. At Sauder Village Campground, a camper observed, "The pull throughs only have electric, no water or sewer. They do have a place to get water onsite which is what we did."

WiFi reliability: Internet connectivity varies across campgrounds. One RVer at Sauder Village noted, "The WiFi was also a plus - it was fast and we rarely had any issues," which is important for those needing to stay connected.
