Cell service varies throughout the area, with stronger signals near Merrillville and diminished coverage in more rural locations. Pet policies differ between parks - Indiana Dunes State Park permits pets but prohibits alcohol, while Oak Lake allows both. Dump stations are available at most locations, though Love's RV Stop and Cedar Lake Ministries provide sewer hookups directly at campsites.

      Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

      Clean & Spacious

We pulled in around 4:30 in the evening. The sight was spacious with plenty of room in between sites. Since the weather was cooler , it was pretty sparse with other campers. We stayed 2 nights over the weekend. You are within walking distance to the beach within the park. The buildings have great architecture. The sight had 50 amp electric hook ups but no water or sewer connections, and we knew that going in. We had a back in sight #69. There was plenty of space on all sides. We have a 37’ motorhome and pulled a Jeep behind it. There was plenty of room to maneuver around. The sight also had a wood picnic table and fire ring for a wood fire pit. We will definitely be back! I wish I had taken more photos from the beach and beach pavilion.

      Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

Nice layout and a ton of nature activities

The state park is located within the boundaries of the Indiana Dunes National Park (formerly National Lakeshore), so don't get confused by this. There also is a national park campground, but it's closed in the winter.)

This state park has a nice layout because the sites seem to be staggered so that they don't back up to each other. Also, there is a good buffer space behind the sites and decent space between each site.

All sites have 20- 30- and 50-amp service available, plus almost all are a combination of a concrete pad and asphalt apron. Note that just because they're paved doesn't mean all of them are level. Each site has a fire pit and it appeared they all have grill grates on them.

One nice touch is that some sites have wider asphalt aprons so if you have a longer rig, you can put your towing vehicle or your towed vehicle off to the side once your rig is in place. Also, the ADA sites are nicely laid out with larger concrete pads so that even the fire pits are in the concrete section for ease of access.

Note that after Nov. 1, the water is shut off and bathrooms are shut down until spring, although there are vault toilets available.

You will hear a pretty regular stream of train whistles at this campground, but they aren't so loud as to be disruptive.

You can hike to the 1929 Dunes Pavilion and a large beach on Lake Michigan. The best hiking activity, however, and also easily accessible by walking from the campground, is the series of dune trails. The Nature Center, which sits between the campground and the trails, has some good visitor's information about the dunes, the flora and fauna, and the history of the area.

Once you finish seeing what you want in the state park, there's still the entire national park to see. Plus, there's a multi-use trail that runs for 9 miles along the state park and into the national park.

Cell service for Verizon was two bars but speeds seem to be good. Less signal and speed for Google Fi, but not terrible.

      Oak Lake RV Resort

We came for a weekend… Stayed nearly 2 weeks! Oak Lake RV Resort is where family memories are made.

6 people, 1 pup & a 44.4' Keystone Sprinter... Oak Lake RV Resort handled it all with ease & gave us the BEST camping trip ever! From the moment you drive up, staff are waiting in golf carts to guide you to your site & even help with setup. We were nervous about fitting our big rig, but pull-through site #17 made it flawless. Where else does that??

We originally booked August 22–25, extended to the 29th & then lucked into staying through Labor Day weekend. We canceled our other plans because Oak Lake had everything we wanted & more!!Pond swimming & obstacle course, movies on our inflatable screen, golf cart glow parades, s’mores, homemade campfire pizzas & endless family memories. The kids are still raving about it!

Rebecca deserves a huge shoutout for going above & beyond! Tom & Marianne, the owners, are amazing hosts who clearly pour their hearts into making Oak Lake special. Even the coin operated laundry was a lifesaver & convinced us we need a washer/dryer in our camper for future impromptu stays 😂.

We’re already talking about being put on the list for a seasonal site for next year bc we know we’ll be back again & again. Oak Lake RV Resort is Newton County’s hidden gem!!! If you’re searching for fun, hospitality & true family camping memories... THIS is the place!! Hands down, every time.

Enchanted Shores RV Park & Campground

      Never Again!

We booked here sight unseen due to temporary employment in the area.

      What a terrible mistake.

The best thing was, that there is "full hook up" here???

This place is old and run-down to say the least, there's not a flat spot on any of the roads. The sites are dirt with something green in between. The stinkest water we've ever smelled, horrible!!! Our sewer connection was nearly buried. There is a laundry area, I don't know what it's like, I'd never wash our close in that nasty water, we found a Laundromat. The lots are verious sizes of tiny. Most sites you're back to back to your neighbor. Your door faces your other neighbor's door, it's like you shared a site. We asked for a picnic table and got one, but when we left for a week, when we returned it was gone! Despite the high rent, there's no internet or cable TV, basically no emenities. We were told there was planned activities, but we weren't there long enough to find out. There's a area for long-term, yearly sites. Several of the trailers in that area were old with beat up decks, some surrounded by junk.

We installed interior security cameras to keep an eye on our rig. Then stayed in a hotel until we changed our job location.

We can't image a worse location. I should be condemned.

We feel bad for those who are on the road and fall into this trap for a place to stay on the way, or close to Chicago.

      Michigan City Campground

      Great campground, will return

This is a beautifully kept campground just outside Michigan City, IN. It is gated so will need to call in once you arrive to enter. We stayed  in the premium sites which were 90ft pull thought with 50A service, water and sewer, and the best wifi I have seen at a campsite. The cement patio was large with a picnic table and an adjacent fire pit. There is swimming pool and a game room, and a small store with the essentials, and propane.

You are close to Indiana Dunes and the downtown area of Michigan city. Good food, shops are close by.

By the way there are a number of cabins/mini homes to rent.

      Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

      Close by taste of nature

This is actually our second visit here. It’s only 20 minutes from our home, so we expect to come back many times. It’s a unique location about .5 miles from the actual beach and there’s a path/boardwalk that takes you right there. This is one of the few state parks that has a year-round heated bathroom with shower, so even with our popup camper we were able to take advantage of the decent weather for our first trip of the year. Sites are decent sized and have asphalt driveways with concrete pads. Sites are electric only, but there’s several water fills, even in winter. Very popular campground so you do have to book well in advance during regular season. Be aware that because it shares an entrance to the state park beach, entering on a summer Saturday or summer Sunday can take upwards of 45 minutes or more.

      Last Resort Campground

      Quiet, reasonably priced rest spot.

We stayed here two weeks while visiting friends in the area. The site was a little small but was pull through and full hookup. Even though we were close to a highway and railroad, traffic noise did bother us. The wifi did not reach out area but I know they plan to expand it's capabilities soon. The best part was free access to the pond, paddle boats etc and friendly staff. The low points were very hard (with odd smell) water to the point where we didn't trust using the on camp laundry. Make sure you have a good on-line water filter.

    What to do

Beach activities at Lake Michigan: Indiana Dunes State Park Campground offers access to swimming and sunset viewing opportunities at Lake Michigan. "The lake and dunes are spectacular and live up to the hype. The 3 dune challenge is not really a challenge if you are moderately healthy but it is fun and scenic! The cool soft sand feels fantastic, definitely best hiked barefoot," shared Greg S.

Fishing access: Lake Alexander RV Park provides fishing opportunities on the Kankakee River. "Lake Alexander RV Park is a quiet, spacious, family owned and operated campground located near Momence, Illinois, within a 1-hour drive of Chicago. The camp is 120 acres of natural beauty on the banks of the Kankakee River," notes Iris A.

Nature trails: Cedar Lake offers walking paths through wooded areas. "There was a nice big field for the dog to run. Nature trails and of course Cedar Lake. People seemed friendly," reported Christopher G. about his stay at Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park.

    What campers like

Security features: Love's RV Stop-Demotte provides gated access for increased security. Steven C. mentioned, "Great stop for the night, It's new, gated and has basic amenities like a General store, Dog park and basketball court and tennis ball court for some activities if you have kids."

Cell service reliability: Reception is strongest near major highways and deteriorates in rural locations. "We decided to go here because we wanted to go camping with a friend in IN and meet halfway. Our friend ended up not being able to meet us but we still went, and I'm glad we did!" shared Maaya Y. about Lake Alexander RV Park.

Water activities: Oak Lake RV Resort features a swimming pond with recreational options. One camper, Nadiehsda B., described their experience: "Pond swimming & obstacle course, movies on our inflatable screen, golf cart glow parades, s'mores, homemade campfire pizzas & endless family memories. The kids are still raving about it!"

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Advanced booking is essential for most parks in the region, particularly on weekends. "We originally booked August 22–25, extended to the 29th & then lucked into staying through Labor Day weekend. We canceled our other plans because Oak Lake had everything we wanted & more!" noted a visitor at Oak Lake RV Resort.

Site surface variations: Different parks offer various site surfaces from concrete to dirt. According to Alan I. at Woodland Village Mobile Home & RV Park, "This place is more of a trailer park for more long term residents. They don't provide any showers toilets or wifi. As well every spot has cemented runners which is a nice touch but you must back into them."

Train noise: Some campgrounds experience noise from nearby rail lines. "The only reason I rate this park a three is that it's very close to train lines and the trains going through and blasting their horns all night long. If you're a heavy sleeper and can deal with that, you'll be just fine," warned Kaley A. about Indiana Dunes State Park Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and recreational facilities: Campgrounds with play areas keep children entertained. Our site was right next to the playground and my kids had a blast swinging, climbing, and jumping while we set up camp."

Proximity to attractions: Some campgrounds offer access to local attractions within walking distance. "The beach, the trails, bike trails. There is everything to do here, it does not disappoint. Well the weekend traffic can be a bummer," mentioned Kirk B. about Indiana Dunes State Park Campground.

    Tips from RVers

Site accessibility: Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort offers easy access for larger rigs. TK n E. commented, "Friendly staff who were quick to respond to any issues. Partial hookups (sewer just outside of park behind hotel). $46/night (+fees) for a pull-through spot."

Seasonal water availability: Some parks shut off water during colder months. David N. warns about Hollywood Casino RV Resort: "No water before 4/15. Not a bad spot. Average and relatively inexpensive."

Electric service reliability: Check for electrical issues at campsites. Steven C. noted at Love's RV Stop, "The only complaint I had is the site we were at showed a ground fault on the 50amp Circuit so I had to use the 30 amp circuit but it's Nov so no need to run dual ACs minor issue but still make sure your using your EPM devices."
