Roughing it by a creek and a pioneer village

Basic car tent camping at several spots along a creek wIth picnic tables and fire rings (no hookups, portolet toilets, no showers.) There is a rustic scout cabin/group lodge reservable for scout, etc. groups. The park features a pioneer village with log cabins, including a blacksmith forge, etc. that have been moved to the site.

    Winton Woods Campground

Love this campground for a weekend rendezvous!

Winton Woods campground has spacious paved RV spaces with full hook-ups, fire ring, and picnic table. They also have cabin and tent camping. The location is located on the lake with access to put in a kayak or canoe. The bathrooms are clean, with private combined shower/dressing stalls. There is a playground for children, and a camp store that sells firewood and supplies. I love the tall pines on the property. They made me feel like I was out west. The campground is also near paved and unpaved trails in the park that surround more of the lake which allows for walking/running/hiking and bicycling, fishing, small craft boating, with small craft boat rentals available at the marina. The park also allows for horseback riding, and a small water park for children in the summer.

    Winton Woods Campground

Great county park in a beautiful setting!

This is a great county park! It has a nice “campground” feel set in a large pine trees and wide sites but has 50-amp full hook-up sites. The campground is set in Winton Woods County Park which is about 20 minutes from downtown Cincinnati.

There are 123 campsites including RV sites, tent pads, and camping cabins. Most RV sites are back-in but there are 12 pull-thru sites. There is a myriad of sites here from 50-amp full hook-up with paved pads and patios to 30-amp gravel sites. Sites have fire pits, picnic tables. Campsites in the front section (1F – 25F and 1R – 12R) are big rig-friendly with paved roads wide enough to easily maneuver. All utilities worked accordingly and were well-placed in the site. Our 4G Verizon phone got good reception and we were able to get plenty of antenna television channels. The online reservation system is easy to use and gives you an array of sites/cabins to choose from. Be aware that lots of people use this park on the weekends so it can get quiet busy.

There are lots of amenities at this park. Within walking distance of the campground is Winton Woods Lake which has a harbor with boathouse, snack bar, boat rentals and playgrounds. There are miles of paved and rustic hiking trails. There is a camp store, dump station, laundry, restrooms/shower house, boat/kayak launch, and fishing access. Located in the park is a golf course and horseback riding center.

You are within a few miles of everything … grocery, gas/diesel, restaurants, and plenty of shopping. The park is close to I-275 and I-75 making for easy access to major interstates. One place you should not miss is Jungle Jims international grocery and market. This totally eclectic, sprawling "grocery store" has so much to offer. They pride themselves on providing unique foods from all over the world. I could spend hours in this store perusing the isles of which are sectioned off into country and region. There are entire sections on Indian foods, wines, cheeses that you have never heard of, and tanks with live fish ready for the filleting. Also within close proximity is Greaters -one of the country's best ice cream shops (according to Food and Wine). Just down the street is a new person favorite sandwich shop called Izzy's which is famous for their corned beef and delicious potato pancakes.

Loved this park because you have a very nice campsite with 50-amp full hook-up site with lots to do in the area. Our site was level and the roads were easy to navigate in our motorhome. The paved trail around the lake was great for walking/jogging and perfect for launching our kayaks.

We would definitely stay here again.

    Dayton KOA Holiday

Beautiful setting, lots of trees and a steam that runs through it.

We stayed in a small cabin with a swing on the porch but there are many lodging choices. A stream ran behind the cabin. It has a pool and lots of kids activities. Gravel roads aren’t great for small kids learning to ride bikes but ok for older kids and adults.

    Dayton KOA Holiday

    Nice KOA

A nice KOA, with fire pit areas and picnic areas. Each state has a picnic table and the gravel site that we had was level. There is a group yurt for rent a nice little store, and quite a few cabins as well as gazebos and other gathering areas. Wi-fi is horrible even with a booster and sketchy over the air channels.

    Really Well Done

There are cabins, campsites in trees, campsites that aren’t. There’s a nice Mixture of available sites. All the employees are very nice and helpful. They really work hard to maintain the site. The pool is nice. There is a nice play area for kids. They have a short path in the woods which is a nice little loop. Great location with lots to do!

    Governor Bebb MetroPark Campground

Nice quiet spot for a few nights out.

This is a nice county park that is being upgraded.  There is a fairly new playground near the camping areas, a new pit toilet building, and a bridge leading to where a new trail system is being created.  There are a mix of Electric and non electric sites.  I think 9 non-electric and 7 electric sites.

Fire rings and picnic tables at every site.  We were able to fit our Escapod (tear drop) camper in a non-electric site.

I think there is more coming in redevelopment of this county park, so it shoudl keep getting better!

Guide to Laurel

Cabin accommodations near Laurel, Indiana range from rustic to modern options at multiple campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. The region features diverse terrain with elevations between 800-1,000 feet and seasonal temperature variations that impact cabin availability. Most cabins require advance booking, with summer reservations filling 3-6 months ahead at popular locations.

What to do

Kayaking and fishing opportunities: Whitewater Memorial State Park Campground offers excellent water recreation with "awesome fishing lake with tons of good spots to fish" according to Kimberly A. The park provides "water access to both Brookville and Whitewater lakes" making it popular among "fishermen and kayakers" who frequent the lake trails.

Swimming options: During summer months, Versailles State Park features a swimming pool with slides and diving boards. As one visitor noted, "The pool is nice, and the kids love the slides and diving board. They also have a fenced in area for small children with a baby pool and sprinkler."

Hiking trails: Most cabin locations connect to trail systems with varying difficulty levels. At Versailles State Park Campground, visitors appreciate the "great bike trails & walking trails" though one camper warned about rocky terrain: "We went on one of the easy trails. Be aware this area is very rocky so easy is relative to the surroundings."

River floating: Seasonal river activities are available at several sites. One visitor at Hidden Paradise Campground described watching "random people float down river" while their son fished, making it "perfect for overnight stay passing through."

What campers like

Waterfront cabin views: Cabins positioned along waterways offer scenic views. At Morgan's Outdoor Adventures, visitors appreciate being "steps away from gorgeous river views" with one reviewer noting: "There is nothing like waking up and making breakfast while watching the river roll by!"

Privacy levels: Site spacing varies significantly between locations. At Governor Bebb MetroPark Campground, visitors find "basic car tent camping at several spots along a creek with picnic tables and fire rings" in a more secluded setting than some commercial campgrounds.

Family activities: Cornerstone Campground receives high marks for family amenities with one visitor noting there are "tons of stuff for kids to do" and "the resort is beautiful. Lots are level and include a picnic table and fire pit, with nice space between sites."

Swimming quarries: Some locations feature unique swimming areas beyond standard pools. Hidden Paradise Campground has "a quarry full to swim with an aqua playground, with use of free life preservers" making it popular for families seeking water recreation beyond standard pools.

What you should know

Reservation timing: For cabin reservations, timing matters significantly. At popular locations like Thousand Trails Indian Lakes, weekend spots fill quickly while midweek availability remains better: "Completely inundated with annual spots being reserved by weekend warriors meaning minimal availability for people who want to be here during the week."

Bathroom facilities: Bathhouse conditions vary widely between properties. Some campgrounds maintain excellent facilities while others receive criticism. One visitor at Hannon's Camp America noted "shower houses are disgusting and filthy" despite the otherwise good location.

Wildlife awareness: Prepare for local wildlife encounters, particularly at state parks. One camper at Whitewater Memorial warned: "Watch out for the raccoons they are pretty aggressive and were all over our campsite. Clearly they are used to getting handouts, so keep your foodstuffs in your vehicle or well secured."

Accessibility challenges: Some cabins require navigation through difficult terrain. At Hidden Paradise Campground, a visitor noted the entrance can be challenging: "while the campground sign can be seen from the main road on the way in - it all disappears in the dark after you turn onto the road."

Tips for camping with families

Pool facilities: When cabin camping with children, consider locations with dedicated kid swimming areas. Versailles State Park Campground features family-friendly pool options including "a fenced in area for small children with a baby pool and sprinkler. They also sell concessions at the pool."

Playground access: Moccasin Meadow offers family-friendly amenities including "spots available from primitive tent sites, to full hookup" and features a "playground, pond to fish from" according to visitors.

Annual traditions: Several campgrounds host seasonal events that families return to yearly. At Hidden Paradise Campground, one family shared: "We love this campground so much that we return every year! Our boys & friends spend most of their time in the river, but also enjoy the quarry lake with inflatables & paddle boats."

Group accommodations: For multi-family cabin trips, seek locations with clustered cabins. One visitor at Hidden Paradise explained: "The campground also has fabulous cabins at a reasonable price. Our friends without campers join us in the cabins. All together there were 50+ in our party this year."

Tips from RVers

Site dimensions: Larger cabin and RV sites vary significantly between campgrounds. At Cornerstone Campground, visitors note the "lots are level and include a picnic table and fire pit, with nice space between sites."

Campground navigation: Some properties present navigation challenges for larger vehicles. At Hidden Paradise, one visitor with a 42' fifth wheel cautioned: "This little road is quite narrow, has some pretty tight turns with trees on both sides and in the night it's hard to tell where the rear end of your camper is on the turns."

Seasonal considerations: Road conditions impact cabin access during wet periods. Indian Lakes campers mentioned problems with "the condition of the roads throughout the campground. The owners seem to be slacking off on maintenance and therefore, there's a lot of mud and potholes."

Utility reliability: Power availability can fluctuate at some locations. Several campgrounds offer full hookups, but service reliability varies. At Thousand Trails Indian Lakes, one visitor noted having to be "extremely persistent to get a FHU spot only to see dozens continue to be available for the rest of our 2 week stay."
