RV campgrounds around Crown Point, Indiana offer varied seasonal availability with most sites operating from April through October due to the region's cold winters. The area features relatively flat terrain at approximately 700 feet elevation, making it accessible for larger rigs but requiring early reservations during peak summer months. Drainage can be an issue during spring rainstorms at some of the lower-lying facilities.
What to do
Lake activities and swimming: Oak Lake RV Resort maintains a swimming pond with floating obstacles that's popular with families. "Pond swimming & obstacle course, movies on our inflatable screen, golf cart glow parades, s'mores, homemade campfire pizzas & endless family memories. The kids are still raving about it!" reports one visitor at Oak Lake RV Resort.
River access: Lake Alexander RV Park offers direct access to the Kankakee River. "There's a river that's a 5 min walk from the campground that we swam in and it kept us cool from the heat," according to one camper who visited Lake Alexander RV Park during summer months.
Hiking trails: Indiana Dunes State Park features multiple well-marked trails through sand dunes and forested areas within walking distance of the campground. "The 3 dune challenge is not really a challenge if you are moderately healthy but it is fun and scenic! The cool soft sand feels fantastic, definitely best hiked barefoot," shares a camper.
What campers like
Security features: Love's RV Stop receives positive feedback for its gated entrance system. "Easy on and off I 65 yet barely any traffic noise. It just opened and it is well designed. The check in online is very easy," notes one visitor to this newer Love's RV Stop facility that opened in 2023.
Lake views: Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park provides access to recreation on Cedar Lake. "You have access to the perks of the conference grounds including access to a small private beach on the lake, canoes and kayaks, life jackets, and a rec room when open," shares a recent visitor who appreciated the amenities at this location.
Clean facilities: Multiple campgrounds maintain well-kept restrooms and showers. "The bathhouse is right next to the campground. The sight had 50 amp electric hook ups but no water or sewer connections, and we knew that going in," explains a visitor to Indiana Dunes State Park Campground.
What you should know
Train noise: Several campgrounds experience railroad noise due to nearby tracks. "The only reason I rate this park a three is that it's very close to train lines and the trains going through and blasting their horns all night long. If you're a heavy sleeper and you can deal with that, you'll be just fine," warns a tent camper at Indiana Dunes State Park.
Seasonal water service: Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort restricts water service during colder months. "Not a bad spot. Average and relatively inexpensive. No water before 4/15," notes a spring visitor to Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort.
Tent camping restrictions: Some locations no longer accommodate tent campers. "This campground was bought out by Zeeman and just announced that tents and pop up campers are NOT allowed," reports a disappointed long-time Oak Lake visitor who had previously used the facility.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: Request sites near play areas if traveling with children. "Pulled in as the sun was coming down after a looong day of driving. Our site was right next to the playground and my kids had a blast swinging, climbing, and jumping while we set up camp," shares a parent who stayed at Oak Lake RV Resort.
Beach facilities: The Indiana Dunes State Park beach includes lifeguards during designated hours. "The beach was well maintained, and had lifeguards during certain hours, which gave me a little bit of extra comfort in bringing my kids to the lake. It had really nice bathroom facilities, and changing room facilities there," notes a family camper.
Dog-friendly areas: Some parks offer designated pet recreation spaces. "Great stop for the night, It's new, gated and has basic amenities like a General store, Dog park and basketball court and tennis ball court for some activities if you have kids," mentions a visitor to Love's RV Stop.
Tips from RVers
Electrical testing: Bring power management devices to prevent equipment damage. "The only complaint I had is the site we were at showed a ground fault on the 50amp Circuit so I had to use the 30 amp circuit but it's Nov so no need to run dual ACs minor issue but still make sure your using your EPM devices," advises an RVer at Love's RV Stop.
Site navigation: Many RV campgrounds near Crown Point have pull-through sites that eliminate backing challenges. "We were nervous about fitting our big rig, but pull-through site #17 made it flawless. Where else does that??" notes a visitor with a 44-foot rig at Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park.
Dump station availability: Plan for end-of-stay waste disposal, particularly at parks without full hookups. "Partial hookups (sewer just outside of park behind hotel). $46/night (+fees) for a pull-through spot," explains a visitor to Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort who appreciated the nearby dump facilities despite the lack of sewer connections at individual sites.
