What to do
Kayaking on calm waters: Whitewater Memorial State Park offers excellent kayaking opportunities. "Whitewater Memorial State Park is located close to Liberty Indiana and is our favorite between the two major parks on Brookville Lake. It has water access to both Brookville and Whitewater lakes," notes Brandie B. from Whitewater Memorial State Park.
Hiking diverse terrain: Summit Lake State Park provides trails suitable for various skill levels. "Trails around the lake were nice with many opportunities for scenic photographs," reports Marshall P. Summit Lake offers a quieter alternative to the more popular equestrian-focused parks near Batesville.
Mountain biking: Beyond horseback riding, parks near Batesville feature mountain biking trails. "Loved spending time in the pool and on the trails here...but we happened to go during a big mountain bike event in July. So if you're planning to camp (or even hike) here I'd check the calendar first," suggests Dan N. from Versailles State Park.
What campers like
Spacious equestrian sites: The horse campgrounds near Batesville, Indiana feature well-designed layouts. "I came here and stayed in my tent (family had their horse trailer with camper) for a night during the chilly nights of October. I wish all campsites were like these - very, very spread out!" remarks Brady R. about the horse camping at Whitewater Memorial State Park.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently praise the maintenance of bathroom facilities. "Clean bathrooms with push button showers. We went on one of the easy trails. Be aware this area is very rocky so easy is relate to the surroundings," notes Kristene B. about Clifty Falls State Park.
Halloween festivities: For fall visitors, special seasonal events enhance the camping experience. "We love the Halloween festivities! It is so fun to see all the costumes and the decorations all over the campground. We plan to make it an annual tradition!" shares Jessie W. about camping at Versailles State Park.
What you should know
Site selection matters: Many campgrounds have variable site quality. "Went in October, but did not write review until December. Great place and want to come back in the summer to enjoy the lake and pool. We had a nice level, shaded campground. Some sites are not level at all. So be sure to read up on the site you want before you book it," advises Burns G. about Versailles State Park.
Wildlife awareness: Raccoons are active in several campgrounds near the Batesville equestrian areas. "Watch out for the raccoons they are pretty brave and were all over our campsite. Clearly they are used to getting handouts, so keep your foodstuffs in you vehicle or well secured," warns John F. from Hueston Woods State Park.
Dump station timing: Peak checkout times can create congestion at facilities. "I would also note that there is only one dump station for the three campgrounds so there can be quite the line when trying to get out of there on Sunday afternoon," mentions Jessie W. about Versailles State Park campgrounds.
Tips for camping with families
Pool facilities: Several parks offer swimming options beyond natural water features. "The pool is nice, and the kids love the slides and diving board. They also have a fenced in area for small children with a baby pool and sprinkler. They do sell concessions at the pool as well," explains Jessie W. about family amenities at Versailles.
Playground access: When selecting a campsite for families with children, consider proximity to play areas. "A loop is pretty open without a lot of shade. B & C have lots of shade but the sites are either not very level or not very big. Clean bathrooms with push button showers," observes Kristene B. about Clifty Falls State Park.
Campground layout knowledge: Understanding the different camping loops helps with family site selection. "Versailles State Park is a clean and family friendly camping destination that we enjoying visiting. There are three separate main campgrounds here; A B and C. C is our favorite because it is small, and mostly level lots (except the far end) with mature trees," shares Jessie W.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling requirements: Many RV sites near Batesville require leveling equipment. "Our site was a pull through and, while level left to right, required a good bit of leveling front to back," notes Marshall P. from Summit Lake State Park.
Seasonal water access: Water availability varies by season and campground section. "We stayed before the peak season opened up. Potable water was available at the entrance but was not on yet in the campground itself. The sites are well spaced out with a few pull through sites and many back ins," advises Marshall P. about Summit Lake facilities.
Access for larger rigs: When booking equestrian camping near Batesville, consider turning radius limitations. "I would think a rig more than 31 or 32 feet long would have difficulty maneuvering around the curve at the end of the second loop. We are a 30ft. Fifth wheel and it was pretty tight for us," cautions Lisa M. about camping at Summit Lake State Park.
