This free horse campground operates without reservations and accommodates all types of camping equipment on its grassy, open terrain. The gravel entrance road leads to dispersed camping across multiple acres where RVs, tents, and horse trailers share space. Betsy W. notes "Open areas with pit toilets and water available. Shade and sunny locations."
The campground maintains a low-key atmosphere with widely spaced camping spots allowing privacy between groups. Most weekends see only a handful of occupied sites despite capacity for 50-60 units. Vault toilets receive consistent praise for cleanliness, and a dumpster handles trash disposal. Fire rings dot the property, though campers should bring their own fire pit for maximum flexibility in site selection.
Two trailheads provide direct access to Hoosier National Forest hiking routes, including connections to the Grubb Ridge Loop where visitors can hunt for geodes in nearby creek beds. The Hickory Ridge Fire Tower sits within walking distance. Cell coverage reaches 1-2 bars across most providers, and the open layout supports solar charging for extended stays. Water spigots are available, though some campers drive three miles to Hardin for additional services.
While designated as a horse facility, equestrian users represent only a small fraction of visitors. Gary J. observed "Of 20 or so campers I saw horse trailers, couple of large RVs, teardrops, tent camping and vehicle camping." Campers should leave corrals and hitch rails for horse trailers when present. The soft grass surface makes leveling straightforward for RVs, while tent campers find ample flat ground away from muddy areas.
For a more structured camping experience, Hardin Ridge offers reserved sites with additional amenities just over two miles west.
