Best Cabin Camping near Keyesport, IL

Cabins at Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area and Okaw Valley Kampground provide rustic accommodations near Carlyle Lake. Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet offers electric hookups in their cabins, while most lack running water or private bathrooms. Visitors access shared shower facilities located throughout the campgrounds. Washington County State Recreation Area features cabins with lake views but without modern amenities. "This State Park offers playground areas and more. Cabins, campsites with power or no power the choice is yours," notes one visitor to Eldon Hazlet.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Dam West Campground and Carlyle Lake offer basic cabin rentals with limited amenities, while Cedarbrook RV Park provides more furnished options. Most cabins require advance reservations, especially during summer months when Carlyle Lake attracts water recreation enthusiasts. Pet policies vary by location, with many allowing dogs for an additional fee. A visitor to Washington County Lake mentioned that their cabins are "overpriced due to no running water or nearby toilet but more private and great lake views."

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Cooking facilities vary widely—some cabins offer only outdoor fire rings with grates, while others provide basic indoor kitchenettes. Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area and MC Lodging maintain cabin rentals year-round, though winter amenities may be limited. Camp stores at Eldon Hazlet and Okaw Valley Kampground stock basic provisions, firewood, and camping supplies. Okaw Valley Kampground features "a nice little fishing area (no license required catch and release)" according to a recent review, making it convenient for cabin guests who enjoy fishing.

    Nice clean and convenient

Family owned with a nice little fishing area (no license required catch and release) paddle boats and camp store. A nice pool with a big covered pavilion, clean restrooms and showers with hot water. We had a level pull thru gravel site with a picnic table and small fire ring and didn’t have to unhook for our overnight. Walking/hiking wooded trails 2 cabins available- several seasonal folks. We were there on a Sunday evening and didn’t really see anyone. Little bit of road noise but so convenient! Thanks Barb!

It has a pool, swing sets, playground, cabins, ponds with stocked fish, beautiful walking trails, camping, welcome center, baseball field, volleyball, games, horseshoes, paddle boats, miniature golf, and so much more. Come check out this amazing campground and all it has to offer! Our rough collies will be joining us at this dog friendly campground! There is always something to do here and the owners strive to make it a family place by providing many activities on the weekends. The owners have done an amazing job on this campground and have made it one of the best campgrounds around to create that lasting experience with our children before they grow up!!!

    Shady Rest campground

Really great campground. Good mix of tents and RVs. Bath house was very well kept and clean. Showers ran cold at first but after a few mins it gets warmer! There were plenty of pit toliets through out the campground and trash cans. My tent site was clean, good flat spot for tent, picnic table and fire pit with attached grill.

The Concession building in the park is closing. No boat rentals, selling everything he has on the shelf.

Caught a few bass and and good amount of hiking. Large trail around the whole lake, smaller trails lead to sites around the different campgrounds.

    Beaver Dam State Park Campground

    Nice campsites

All sites are shaded and mostly level with pull-thru or back-in parking. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a grate over it. Each site has electric, however the water spigots are scattered about. The restroom and shower house is very clean.

There is a nice walking trail path that goes around the exterior of the lake. The lake has boat access and some good fishing spots. There is also a restaurant and store on the lake. The breakfast at the restaurant is great! Mosquitoes are bad, remember to bring repellent.

    Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

Many lakeside sites, extra long drives for boat trailers, quiet and scenic

Rend Lake is a large COE recreation area with 4 campgrounds, some with full hook ups for $28 a night, two dams, 2 beaches, several boat launches, a marina, golf course and a restaurant.  Not all facilities were open when we visited in March.  Hiking and biking trails and close to town for gas and bait.  Each site has a stone picnic table and fire ring.  Showers, bathrooms and  playgrounds in multiple places and convenient locations.  Some sites do have steep grade, originally booked Bluejay 48 and moved.

    Country Bend Campground

    Great family friendly campground

Great place to stay and feel part of the community.  Pretty scenery to walk around.  Plenty of lakes/ponds to fish.  We couldn't boat while there due to COVID but look forward to going back and taking our kayaks.  Attentive and Friendly camp hosts. Pet friendly. Close to town if you've forgotten anything or want to have a restaurant dinner. Close to the highway for easy access.  Full hookup available. Monthly or Season also available.

    Gun Creek

    So beautiful

There’s not a bad campsite here. There are sites with electric, water, and sewer. Several sites are right on Rend Lake. Most sites have concrete picnic tables and fire rings. The bath houses are really nice, they are individual shower houses that are clean and well lit. The grounds are very well maintained. The park was full while we stayed there, but was really quiet. You can tent camp or use a camper.

Guide to Keyesport

Cabin accommodations near Keyesport, Illinois provide access to Carlyle Lake, the largest lake in Illinois at 26,000 acres. Camping cabins in this region typically sit on terrain that ranges from 400-500 feet above sea level, with humid continental climate conditions creating hot summers and mild winters. Spring and fall see average temperatures between 50-75°F, making these seasons popular for cabin stays.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Access fishing areas directly from Okaw Valley Kampground, which features a stocked pond. "There is a nice little fishing area and a dock to fish off," notes one visitor who appreciated the convenience of on-site fishing.

Swimming options: Cool off at the pool in Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area. A camper describes it as "a nice large zero entry pool for a $5 fee on weekends." The pool operates seasonally, typically from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Hiking trails: Explore the walking paths at Dam West Campground, which offers trails with lake views. "The location is prime and the beach at Dam West is great for the kids," writes one reviewer who enjoyed combining hiking with beach time.

What campers like

Peaceful lake views: Many cabins near Keyesport face the water. At Washington County State Recreation Area, a camper mentions the "very pretty lake" and notes that "the park is wooded" despite being surrounded by cornfields.

Spacious sites: Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area offers good separation between camping areas. According to a visitor, "Most of the sites are large and a good distance from the next one," making it ideal for those seeking more privacy.

Clean facilities: Cabin campers appreciate well-maintained bathhouses. "The bath house was very well kept and clean," states one Washington County visitor. Another notes that "showers ran cold at first but after a few mins it gets warmer."

What you should know

Reservation timing: Dam West Campground fills quickly during peak season. "We arrived at this campground at 11am on a Friday only to find that the first-come, first-serve sites were already full," warns one camper. Make reservations months in advance for summer weekends.

Water quality concerns: Water systems may have seasonal issues. At Eldon Hazlet, a camper reported, "I filled my trailer's tank at the drinking water supply when you enter the campground. It was extremely dirty with a lot of copper colored solids."

Bathroom access: Facilities vary widely between cabin locations. At COE Lake Carlyle McNair Campground, "Cleanest bathrooms ever and heated and air conditioned," reports one satisfied guest.

Tips for camping with families

Halloween events: Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area hosts a popular Halloween weekend. "They have a huge Halloween event every year where people decorate their sites and there's a haunted house, then kids trick or treat from site to site," describes a regular visitor who recommends arriving a week early to secure a spot.

Recreational facilities: Families enjoy the multiple play areas at Eldon Hazlet. "There are three playground areas, a basketball court, sand volleyball and a pool during summer months. Lots of families with kids, bike rides and plenty of other lake activities," notes a parent.

Budget-friendly options: Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area offers affordable cabin camping. A visitor mentioned that "the swim beach is not well maintained due to the budget but also doesn't cost anything since they can't pay anyone to man the gate."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Dam West, waterfront sites offer premium views but consider wind exposure. "We camped right on the lake with a great view. This site and the site next to it are the best sites in the campground with a pull through layout. There was not any shade on the site, so you will be dependent on an awning. Keep in mind that strong winds can sweep across the lake."

Proximity to supplies: Carlyle's location offers convenient access to necessities. An Eldon Hazlet visitor noted that "Walmart is just 5-10min away if needed as well as restaurants, gas station, and other amenities in Carlyle nearby."

Off-season advantages: Visiting cabins during shoulder seasons provides more solitude. One Eldon Hazlet camper shared, "Site 26. We were basically by ourselves being mid week in November. Great view. This place looks like it could get pretty full in the summer."
