    Country Bend Campground

    Great experience!

Big things happening at Country Bend Campgrounds in Montrgromy Co, IL. This beautiful campground has many things to offer and is only a few minutes from the local drive in movie theater in Litchfield Illinois. It has a pool, swing sets, playground, cabins, ponds with stocked fish, beautiful walking trails, camping, welcome center, baseball field, volleyball, games, horseshoes, paddle boats, miniature golf, and so much more. This family run business is under new management and is welcoming new seasonal campers and day campers with competitive pricing. This beautiful campground is nestled in a scenic area in the country and is pet friendly. It has clean shower houses with warm water. We just purchased our seasonal campsite earlier in the season. Come check out this amazing campground and all it has to offer! Our rough collies will be joining us at this dog friendly campground! There is always something to do here and the owners strive to make it a family place by providing many activities on the weekends. The owners have done an amazing job on this campground and have made it one of the best campgrounds around to create that lasting experience with our children before they grow up!!!

    Springfield KOA

    Spacious Green Grounds

Springfield KOA is actually in Rochester, but it is only about 25 mins into Springfield and all the wonderful Lincoln historic sites. The campground is very nice, a lot of amenities for families like pool, little bikes, miniature golf and horseshoes. Shop has laundry, ice and oropane, there's free wifi. Sites have power and water, you have to go to dump station on the way out as there aren't individual sewers. But there is grass, picnic table and fire ring at every site, trees all around.

    Sangchris Lake State Park Campground

    5 stars with a caveat

This is a beautiful state park, but hopefully you won’t have the same experience I did with the electric hookup. I stayed here right after the fourth of July and because of the heat over this holiday weekend and a completely full campground, the electricity couldn’t meet the demand and a transformer blew. By the time I arrived the transformer was repaired, however the pedestals in the section I was supposed to stay in had a problem. I was supposed to stay in site 27, but after 3 attempts to get power at 3 different sites, number 24 was the winner and this was a great site! The campground hosts were fantastic in resolving the situation as well.

Site 24 is huge and level with a picnic table and fire ring. Electric but no water at site. The site is totally private on one side because of a lake inlet and there’s a large back area right on the lake. The gravel pad is located right near a large, old bald cypress.

This park has multiple public use areas, 2 campgrounds, boat launches, fishing piers and a beach. I didn’t use the public restrooms because they were closed due to Covid-19. I was able to get internet with Verizon.

This state park felt like it was dropped into the middle of cornfields and made for a fun drive. The sunset views and stars were awesome!

    Country Bend Campground

    Great family friendly campground

Great place to stay and feel part of the community.  Pretty scenery to walk around.  Plenty of lakes/ponds to fish.  We couldn't boat while there due to COVID but look forward to going back and taking our kayaks.  Attentive and Friendly camp hosts. Pet friendly. Close to town if you've forgotten anything or want to have a restaurant dinner. Close to the highway for easy access.  Full hookup available. Monthly or Season also available.

    Coon Creek (IL)

Great Camping Experience, Perfect for Family Vacation

We've been camping at Coon Creek, on a beautiful Lake Shelbyville, for a few years now, the place is perfect for family vacations. And that's exactly what we do. Gather 10-12 of us, reserve a buddy site, so we can all be on one campsite (big enough to fit 5 tents and an RV). If you have a small group and want to get a small site, there are plenty of those. Some even with lake views. The campground is really big, with tons of different sites. Some are closer to each other, but still very private. Nestled in trees. Equipped in fire pits, and lantern posts. Gravel surfaces, with grass around. The site we always get, is situated along the camp road, but once we are set up, it becomes very private. there is no one in a close proximity, just the road traffic. Which is not bad at all. Good overflow parking, perfectly hidden in the trees. Showers and toilets are in great condition, and usually very clean. Well maintained campground. Illinois is pretty boring, and I know this web site is for more remote camping, but all facts considered, if you're looking for a camping getaway, in Chicago area, only about 4 hours drive (south on I-57) - this is a perfect place for you. Lithia Springs Marina offers boat rentals, we usually get a 12 person pontoon boat for few days, to cruise the 26 mile long lake, or chill in one of many, many beautiful coves. Coon Creek is not too far from town of Shelbyville, where you can stock up on camping food, and beverages. Also few quick-bite restaurants in town. There might be some hiking and biking trails, visit the website for more information. You can book on reserveamerica.com.

    coon creek

This place is really shady and is not exposed to the sun. The sites here are really clean and well maintained. Its about 12 dollars for a campsite and is well worth it. They include restrooms and tap water. There is the usual fire ring and picnic tables

    Sangchris Lake State Park Campground

    Was a nice stay

Have camped here a few times and have walked the trails for years. I camped at the primitive sites my first time. The sites were clean and fairly well maintained for primitive. Picnic table and fire pit were in good shape. Plenty of shade! Camp host were very nice and helpful. Non flushable restrooms were clean and stocked. It stormed pretty bad the second night there. Woke up to find my tent wasnt so waterproof. But made most of it that morning because I was also leaving that day. On my second most recent trip we stayed in the loop on an electrical site. Once again the sites were clean and the fireplace was clean and ready. Camp host were once again very helpful and polite. The kids had a great time even though due to covid-19 the playground was closed. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is the fact that the trails and bridges were in horrible condition. It was heartbreaking to see them in this condition as I've walked them since a child.

    Camp Lakewood

    Nice campground

Booked a overnight stay while traveling through the area. Nice set up, but lots are tight with winding roads to sites. Many sites overlook small lake. Must be nice in summer and fall when leaves are on trees. Full hook up on lots but no cable. Park has nice store and commons area with games. A pizza place is operating on site. Had pizza and wings that were good. Enjoyed our stay. Staff was friendly

Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort

Fun, Clean, safe for the family

Just finished our second trip/vacation here. We stayed in the rental cabins, but are in the waiting list for a seasonal site. Right next to the lake. Plenty of room for everyone, from tents to the massive RVs. The pool very clean and never gets over crowded. Staff are knowledgeable and polite. Friendly/quiet dogs allowed. Wonderful pirate ship playground. Weekend activities for the kids. Electric golf carts allowed. Very inexpensive compared to campgrounds closer to me.

Guide to Elwin

Cabin camping near Elwin, Illinois offers access to Lake Shelbyville's 11,100-acre reservoir and surrounding woodlands. The area maintains moderate temperatures from April through October, averaging 72-85°F during peak summer months. Most cabin facilities operate seasonally with limited winter availability at select locations like Wolf Creek State Park Campground, where cabins maintain electricity during colder months.

What to do

Fishing at Clinton Lake: Clinton Lake's warm waters create unique fishing conditions due to discharge from the nearby nuclear plant. "Clinton Lake is a boating destination as the waters are unusually warm due to the discharge from the nearby nuclear plant," notes a camper at Clinton Lake State Recreation Area.

Boating rentals: Lake Shelbyville provides multiple boat rental options within 20 minutes of most cabins. A visitor to Coon Creek shares, "Lithia Springs Marina offers boat rentals, we usually get a 12 person pontoon boat for few days, to cruise the 26 mile long lake, or chill in one of many, many beautiful coves."

Geocaching opportunities: Several campgrounds maintain geocaching activities that work well for afternoon adventures. "There are several paths down to the waters edge and the beach, lots of little hiking, tons of Geocaching, and a great little beach That my son really like to swim," reports a Coon Creek camper.

Lake swimming: Many cabin locations offer swimming access with varying conditions. A reviewer at Sangchris Lake State Park Campground notes, "I took a trip alone with my tent for 4 days in May. The place is as pristine as it was when I was a kid- perfect bathhouse, beautiful lakeshore, and cozy tent camping."

What campers like

Privacy variations: Cabin sites offer different levels of seclusion depending on location and season. A camper at Wolf Creek State Park Campground explains, "Many many spots for RVs all next to one another but there was tree cover for some and the possibility of a little bit of privacy but not much in that area."

Budget-friendly options: Several campgrounds offer economical cabin alternatives with basic amenities. A visitor to Coon Creek noted, "This site was forested enough to provide seclusion from our neighbors, which we loved! We also had the opportunity to go fishing, which is very common! That became our main past time."

Clean facilities: Recent improvements to bathhouses and common areas appear across multiple locations. A guest at Camp Lakewood reports, "Everything is super clean here, staff is friendly. There is laundry on site and the showers are some of the cleanest I've seen."

Entertainment amenities: Some cabin locations feature unexpected recreational facilities. "This campground is very shady on a beautiful lake. The tent campsites are level and there is enough space between the sites to make for a quiet night," observes a Coon Creek visitor.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most cabin facilities near Elwin close between November and March, with limited exceptions. A reviewer at Sangchris Lake State Park Campground mentions, "I have been coming here for years with my family when I was younger. I took a trip alone with my tent for 4 days in May."

Reservation requirements: Weekend cabin availability becomes extremely limited from May through September, requiring 2-3 month advance booking. "This campground is very busy in the prime camping season, but if you are camping with a group and have a boat this is the place to go," advises a visitor to Coon Creek.

Water access variations: Lakefront cabin locations differ substantially in shore quality and accessibility. One Clinton Lake camper explains, "The different loops have very different feels...some are very shaded in the trees, some more open with a prairie type view."

Off-season considerations: Winter cabin camping requires additional preparation for limited services. At The Kampground, a visitor notes, "The new owner has really done a fantastic job of restoring this property which was formerly a church kids camp. The bathrooms were really clean, property well maintain, staff was extremely nice and hospitable."

Tips for camping with families

Swimming beaches: Several campgrounds maintain supervised swimming areas with gradual entry points. "Lake Shelbyville has everything: biking, hiking, a beach, fishing and the town has a small movie theater showing current movies for $4.00," shares a Coon Creek visitor.

Bug management: Evening insects become problematic during summer months without proper preparation. A Coon Creek camper advises, "The only thing I would say is make sure that you bring a screen tent for eating outside as the bugs really get bad at night."

Playground facilities: Multiple campgrounds feature recently updated play equipment. At Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort, a camper reports, "Great campground for a chill entertaining weekend with kids. Beautiful new pool was perfectly maintained with plenty of tables and chairs to make a day of the time at the pool. Pavilion and picnic area near pool and playground perfect for family gatherings."

Storage considerations: Cabins typically provide minimal storage space, requiring careful planning. "We chose a buddy site even though we weren't camping with another family because we like the location. It was right at the end of the peninsula, and it is by far the biggest and beautiful site we have ever stayed in," notes a Coon Creek visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Gravel pads and tree placement affect leveling options throughout the area. At Camp Lakewood, a visitor observes, "The campground is fairly small. They appeared to have all gravel sites with minimal grass. There are fire rings by request. The sites are fairly tight."

Water connections: Many sites require extended hose lengths for hookups. "Only down fall is there needs to be more rock on the sites, the sites get muddy after a rain!" cautions a camper at Springfield KOA.

Power reliability: Electric service capacity varies during peak summer periods. A Camp Lakewood reviewer states, "Very nice people. Kind. Clean site with excellent WIFI. Park was full and we were streaming video. Had only three interruptions for buffering but they were short."
