Best Campgrounds near Clinton, IL

Clinton, Illinois provides several established campgrounds within close proximity, primarily state parks and recreation areas that accommodate a range of camping styles. Weldon Springs State Park Campground and Clinton Lake State Recreation Area are the two primary developed camping areas, both offering tent and RV sites with varying amenities. Arrowhead Acres Campground near downtown Clinton provides electrical hookups and water access. Most campgrounds in the region support both primitive tent camping and sites with electrical connections for recreational vehicles, while Clinton Lake State Recreation Area also features cabin accommodations and glamping options.

Access to most camping areas remains open year-round, though facilities and services may be limited during winter months. Many sites require reservations, particularly during summer weekends and holidays when campgrounds reach capacity. Electrical hookups are available at most established sites, with Clinton Lake offering some full hookup options including sewer connections. The region experiences typical Midwestern seasonal variations with humid summers and cold winters. Spring camping may encounter muddy conditions, while fall provides more moderate temperatures and fewer insects. A visitor noted, "We came during Fourth of July and never felt like it was overly crowded. Sites were spacious but wasn't much privacy, which didn't bother us because it allowed for our kids to play with the other kids easily."

Campers consistently mention the natural features and recreation opportunities as highlights of the Clinton area campgrounds. Weldon Springs features wooded tent sites that provide more seclusion than the RV areas, with hiking trails and fishing opportunities at the park pond. Clinton Lake State Recreation Area provides beach access, boating facilities, and swimming areas that make it popular with families. Several camping areas include shower facilities and modern restrooms, though maintenance quality varies between locations. Wildlife viewing opportunities exist throughout the area, with one camper reporting, "The best part was watching the hummingbirds at the north, marshy end of the lake." Some campers report issues with raccoons in the tent camping areas at Weldon Springs, suggesting proper food storage is essential.

    Friends Creek Campground

    Secluded and Cozy

We stayed here during our travels from Kansas to Indiana. While we only stayed one night, it was long enough to know that should we travel nearby again-this will be our stopping point. Easy to access from the highway yet while in the park, we experienced pure bliss and quiet. Spacious sites and an abundant amount of shade made this stay even better! The camp hosts do an excellent job as the grounds and bathhouse were all immaculate! These are electric only sites however there are several water spigots to fill the tank prior to parking. For ease, there are even potable water spigots at the dump station and the bathhouse as well. Our site was fairly level and easy to maneuver into. For reference, we have a 34’ fifth wheel. When reserving, note that there are a handful of 50 amp sites, several 30 amp sites and tent sites available.

    Love's RV Stop-Normal IL 867

A trickster with premium luxury pricing.

We decided to not stay here. We stopped, did the online reservation (Loves now uses Camplife website). Made the reservation for a single night and it's $70+ tax and fees.  We paid less per night at luxury campgrounds with waterparks and entertainment. This is a truck stop. Needless to say, we won't be using Love's anymore for our single night stays when traveling.

    Friends Creek Campground

    Great campground

Very nice small campground with well spaced sites. The bathrooms were very clean. The Macon County website is a bit wonky to navigate. The camp host is a jewel. Be aware that there are 50 amp sites and 30 amp sites. The 50 amp sites are more expensive. Would definitely return.

Gibson City South Park Municipal Campground

    Wonderful spot

This is a great city run campground attached to a block sized city park. 30 amp and water at each site. The park has restrooms, with showers. You only need to grab a key from the police department. There is a dump station on site and large dumpster. Supermarket, restaurants and gas station with in a few blocks. An active American Legion post/bar just down main street. All for $10 a night.

Extremely peaceful spot and friendly camp host. Great shower/bathroom facilities (could be little cooler in there in the summer)

    Wolf Creek State Park Campground

Bad Management Ready To Ruin Your Holiday

This park is beautiful, clean and the people were friendly. My issue is with the site supervisor and superintendent. On July 4th 2025 we were given the option of moving our entire campsite or being kicked out of the park. JULY 4TH! We booked our campsite in the last week of April, paid in full. We were the second party to book any spot in the entire campground! We chose our spot specifically for the access to the water and seclusion from the rest of the sites. Come to find out(a day after we set up camp) we booked in "horse camp" which apparently requires you to have horses. It never stated this on the website or rental confirmation we received. Nobody reached out to us in the three months we held the booking to confirm if we had horses. There was no on-site check in that could have saved us the trouble. No, instead we had to take 4 hours out of our holiday to pack all of our stuff and move into overflow camping or be forced to leave. Because of their mistake. Absolutely ruined our holiday with zero remorse or understanding. The icing on the cake was as we were leaving horse camp we noticed multiple other camp sites where people had not brought horses. They stated this happens all the time. If site management had two braincells to rub together they would fix their website instead of consistently ruining peoples trips and holidays. And then these people had the audacity to say they weren't going to charge us for the campsite they moved us to?!?! In reality, we should be receiving a full refund for the campsite we did pay for and free passes for the rest of the year. There is a second state campground on the other side of the lake I would suggest before coming to this place.

    D & W Lake RV Park

    Lovely hideway

Very nice looking campground. When we drove in, 1st impression, it gave off a "Welcome" feel. Check-in was easy, we were pre-paid, we were taken directly to our pull-thru site. Stayed only 1 night, had planned 2 but had issues had to call and cancel 1 night. Sites level, plenty of space between campers, shade trees, loved the dog run too. Overall it was a very nice well kept campground. I'm glad we made a reservation. We enjoyed our stay.

    Walmart - Peoria Supercenter

    Bumper Car Parking Lot

This is one of the larger Walmart stores that I have across in my travels and is conveniently located right off of I74 just due south of Peoria and across the Illinois River. You will immediately discover that this Walmart is easily accessible from just about any entrance point that completely surrounds this blue big box retailer. And even though this retail outlet is massive, as is its accompanying oversized parking pad, the place was very frenetic, and jam-packed with lots of traffic zipping around in multiple directions.

But hey, if lots of ping-pong match-style traffic doesn’t dissuade you from parking here, then you’ll be treated to a decent ton of amenities as you are situated within a massive retail complex that is surrounded by other big box retailers like Lowe’s and Bass Pro Shop, a number of gas stations as well as a decent assortment of smart restaurants, like Texas Roadhouse, Childer’s Eatery and Godfather’s Pizza. Of course, there’s no shortage of drive-by fast food joints nearby like McDonald’s, IHOP, Bob Evans, Chick-fil-A and Taco Bell, but take it from me, you’d be better off crossing the Illinois River into Peoria to check out some better haunts like Obed & Isaac’s Microbrewery & Eatery or Thyme Kitchen & Craft Beer.

Should you decide to park at this oversized discount retailer parking haven, I would suggest parking either on the southern or northern perimeters as while they are next to their own respective inner 2-lane roads, the traffic is slow-moving and isn’t stopped for any lights around those areas, making for less noise pollution. You’ll find that the lot is very flat and level, well-paved albeit dated as well as offering really great lighting at night along with very good rotating security that remain constantly vigilant in this overgrown shopping mecca.

While scoring criteria may vary from one person to the next, here are the 5 most important criteria that informed my rating of this overnight location: convenience (EZ on- and off-access), safety & security, quality (of facilities), peace & quiet and amenities (either on-site or nearby). Here’s how I ranked this particular overnight spot:

    Convenience: 3

    Safety & Security: 2

    Quality: 3

    Peace & Quiet: 2

    Amenities: 3

    Overall, I scored this location a 3

    Happy Overnighting!

Guide to Clinton

Camping spots near Clinton, Illinois provide access to woodlands and prairie landscapes in the heart of the Midwest. The area sits at approximately 700 feet above sea level with seasonal temperatures ranging from winter lows around 15°F to summer highs around 85°F. The region contains several state-managed recreation areas with both open and wooded camping options in proximity to lakes and streams.

What to do

Backpacking and hiking trails: Weldon Springs State Park Campground offers designated backpacking sites separate from the main camping areas. "Short walk from the parking lot if carrying heavy gear, but still spaced out enough to feel isolated. Vault toilets right at the parking lot as well. Next to a big grassy area and hill for group games," notes Elizabeth W. about the backcountry sites at Weldon Springs.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds provide lake and pond access for fishing. "Great camping and great fishing. Scenic little park. Tent and trailer camping here, but the real reward is in the primitive backpacking sites," says Bree C. about fishing at Weldon Springs. Several campgrounds rent boats seasonally, particularly at Clinton Lake State Recreation Area where the water is unusually warm due to discharge from the nearby nuclear plant.

Historical exploration: The area contains historical sites including an old schoolhouse at Friends Creek Campground. One reviewer mentions, "The park also has a historic schoolhouse, and guided tours are available by calling." Several hiking trails connect to historical markers and memorials, with trails maintained for year-round access.

What campers like

Secluded woodland sites: Many campers appreciate the wooded tent sites available at several campgrounds. "We loved how the tent sites (especially as you go further back like to sites 6-10) just had a secluded woodsy feeling to them," notes a camper about the hiking sites at Weldon Springs State Park. The primitive areas provide more privacy than main campgrounds.

Clean facilities: Friends Creek Campground receives high marks for maintenance. "Friends Creek is a small campground with nice spacious sites and super clean bathhouses and pit toilets. The fire pits are well kept and the camp host was very kind," says Sara W. Other reviewers consistently mention the well-maintained showers and restrooms throughout this campground.

Lake views and access: Multiple campgrounds offer waterfront sites. A camper at Moraine View State Recreational Area mentions, "This campground surprised us. We got there in the dark and woke up to Fall colors, Canadian geese, trails, playgrounds. We got in without a reservation and upgraded to a beautiful spot on the water." Some campgrounds have direct paths from sites to the shoreline.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds in the area have different access levels by season. "Water was turned off for winter which wasn't entirely clear. The RV fill was shutdown too. Water option we're the lake or a 30 min drive into town for bottled. Not a big deal but something to be prepared for," notes Matthew I. about Clinton Lake during off-season.

Reservation systems: Some campgrounds use first-come, first-served site selection even with reservations. At Friends Creek Campground, "if you reserve a camping spot it's just to have a site. Specific campsites aren't reserved. Get here early and you have your choice," explains Art S. Always check individual campground policies when booking.

Alcohol policies: Alcohol rules vary significantly between campgrounds. Some areas, like Weldon Springs tent sites, have strict no-alcohol policies with signs stating "coolers are subject to inspection," while other campgrounds permit alcohol. Check regulations before arrival to avoid issues.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access options: Several campgrounds offer swimming areas with varying amenities. "We stayed in the J loop, which was more family friendly and very close to the beach. There was a walking path from our site to the shore which was perfect for our young family to go back and forth on," reports Linda N. about Clinton Lake State Recreation Area, though some beaches have separate entry fees.

Playground proximity: When booking sites with children, check proximity to play areas. At Comlara County Park, "There are a few playgrounds for the kids to stay busy as well as small marked trails to follow," mentions Sage C. Some campgrounds have multiple play areas scattered throughout different camping loops.

Site selection strategy: For families, certain camping loops offer better experiences. "The different loops have very different feels...some are very shaded in the trees, some more wide open with a prairie type view," notes Stacia R. about Clinton Lake, where some loops are designated as family-friendly while others may attract more of a party atmosphere.

Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: Limited full hookup sites exist in the region and book quickly. "Have about 20 nice full hook up spots and a bunch of electric sites. Our family spent a week there and loved it," says Brandon E. about Clinton Lake State Recreation Area. Call ahead for information on sewer connections, as many campgrounds offer only electric and water.

Level site considerations: Many campgrounds have varied terrain requiring leveling equipment. "Site 28 unlevel. Requires several lifts. Site is very large however. Does have nice shade," notes Kathie M. about a specific site at Comlara County Park. Some campgrounds provide concrete pads while others have gravel or grass parking surfaces.

Overnight convenience stops: For travelers passing through, Love's RV Stop offers easy highway access with full hookups. "Brand new, clean, well laid out. Easy in, easy out. No need to enter the truck stop. Showers in separate building," reports Alan K. This option provides security gates and convenient amenities for overnight stays about 20 miles from Clinton.
