    Fowler County Park

    Beautiful lake

This is our family favorite camp park in Terre Haute! Has great hiking trails, a covered bridge with historical log cabins for festivals. They have 1 cabin you can rent out. Bring your fishing gear, they stock the lake. There's and boat ramp and bank access to kayak. They have some pull through for your big riggs and some sand beds for your tent camping

There is a mountain bike park close to the campground that is a premier facility. Beginner to advance trails with a practice course. Amazing! My husband competes in the Dyno series and loves to train at the facility then camp at Fowler Park!

    Coon Creek (IL)

Great Camping Experience, Perfect for Family Vacation

We've been camping at Coon Creek, on a beautiful Lake Shelbyville, for a few years now, the place is perfect for family vacations. And that's exactly what we do. Gather 10-12 of us, reserve a buddy site, so we can all be on one campsite (big enough to fit 5 tents and an RV). If you have a small group and want to get a small site, there are plenty of those. Some even with lake views. The campground is really big, with tons of different sites. Some are closer to each other, but still very private. Nestled in trees. Equipped in fire pits, and lantern posts. Gravel surfaces, with grass around. The site we always get, is situated along the camp road, but once we are set up, it becomes very private. there is no one in a close proximity, just the road traffic. Which is not bad at all. Good overflow parking, perfectly hidden in the trees. Showers and toilets are in great condition, and usually very clean. Well maintained campground. Illinois is pretty boring, and I know this web site is for more remote camping, but all facts considered, if you're looking for a camping getaway, in Chicago area, only about 4 hours drive (south on I-57) - this is a perfect place for you. Lithia Springs Marina offers boat rentals, we usually get a 12 person pontoon boat for few days, to cruise the 26 mile long lake, or chill in one of many, many beautiful coves. Coon Creek is not too far from town of Shelbyville, where you can stock up on camping food, and beverages. Also few quick-bite restaurants in town. There might be some hiking and biking trails, visit the website for more information. You can book on reserveamerica.com.

    Amazing hospitality

We stayed there for one night. The park superintendent was so polite and helpful. He even told us where they had been stacking wood from clearing out some trees near the campground and encouraged us to use all we need. Very clean pit toilets. Very good fire pits with cooking grates. Every spot has a picnic table and trash can. Very nice close walk to the north boat launch from the campground. Well kept cleared trails. Very nice and well maintained playground in the middle of the campground. Great views of the lake. 4 bars on Verizon.

    Camp Lakewood

    Nice campground

Booked a overnight stay while traveling through the area. Nice set up, but lots are tight with winding roads to sites. Many sites overlook small lake. Must be nice in summer and fall when leaves are on trees. Full hook up on lots but no cable. Park has nice store and commons area with games. A pizza place is operating on site. Had pizza and wings that were good. Enjoyed our stay. Staff was friendly

Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort

Fun, Clean, safe for the family

Just finished our second trip/vacation here. We stayed in the rental cabins, but are in the waiting list for a seasonal site. Right next to the lake. Plenty of room for everyone, from tents to the massive RVs. The pool very clean and never gets over crowded. Staff are knowledgeable and polite. Friendly/quiet dogs allowed. Wonderful pirate ship playground. Weekend activities for the kids. Electric golf carts allowed. Very inexpensive compared to campgrounds closer to me.

Guide to Charleston

The area surrounding Charleston, Illinois offers cabin camping destinations nestled within the terrain shaped by glacial deposits. The region contains heavily forested hills and creek beds within otherwise flat farmland at approximately 700 feet elevation. Weather conditions vary seasonally with humid summers reaching the mid-80s and winters with temperatures frequently dropping below freezing.

What to do

Hiking trails near campus: Fox Ridge State Park Campground offers trails particularly popular with students from Eastern Illinois University. "The hiking trails are some of the best in the state because the glaciers dropped of mountains of soil in the area where this park is located. The surrounding farm land is flat as can be, but the forested hills and creek beds in the park are almost mountainous," notes Michael M. The park's unique terrain provides challenging walks within 7 miles of Charleston.

Fishing opportunities: Spring Creek Campground features a small fishing pond suitable for casual anglers. Reviewer Charles K. describes it as "great and beautiful," adding that "far enough away from the interstate you don't hear the traffic. No nearby trains either." The grounds are particularly quiet, offering peaceful fishing without highway noise pollution.

Swimming and water activities: Shelbyville Lake provides swimming opportunities near several cabin accommodations. Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort maintains a pool facility that impresses visitors. Sarah S. comments: "Beautiful new pool was perfectly maintained with plenty of tables and chairs to make a day of the time at the pool." The campground also has a small pond for catch-and-release fishing.

What campers like

Large, level sites: Sam Parr State Fish and Wildlife Area provides cabin camping with generously sized concrete pads. "Love the sites at Sam Parr. Only 33 sites overall (only 1st 10 reservable) but sites are quite large & all have very level concrete pads. Didn't even have to put out our big rug @ the door because concrete extends all the way to the fire pit & picnic table," writes Tracie E. Each site includes an individual trash can that staff check regularly.

Secluded campsites: Fox Ridge State Park offers cabins with natural privacy barriers. Allen S. appreciated how "all sites were spacious and shaded. We did not use any of the facilities but were impressed with how secluded our campsite felt. Each site is Isolated by trees and growth and the entire campground is shaded." This makes the location particularly appealing for those seeking quieter cabin camping experiences near Charleston.

Staff responsiveness: Casey KOA receives consistent praise for its management. "Great place for an overnight stay. The new owners couldn't be any nicer. They're working hard to maintain and improve the campground. I had back issues while there and they kept on rearranging their reservations to accommodate us. Even offered to take me to a doctor. Fantastic people," shares Greg B. The commercial campground offers standardized cabins with KOA amenities.

What you should know

Seasonal availability: Many cabin rentals in the Charleston area have limited operating seasons. Robin Hood Woods Campground operates from April through October, making winter cabin options limited. Casey KOA similarly follows a restricted season running "Mar 1 to Oct 31" according to their listing information.

Bathroom facilities vary: Camp Lakewood maintains exceptionally clean facilities that campers frequently mention. S.celeste notes that the campground is "amazingly clean" while Declan W M. elaborates: "Everything is super clean here, staff is friendly. There is laundry on site and the showers are some of the cleanest I've seen." However, other facilities in the region may have inconsistent maintenance schedules.

Reserve early for summer: Wolf Creek State Park Campground has limited reservable sites which fill quickly during peak season. Sonya A. observes that out of "309 spots 141 are reservable," meaning more than half operate on a first-come, first-served basis. During summer holidays, arriving without reservations is not recommended.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Spring Creek Campground offers shaded play areas for children. Jessi R. describes it as having a "nice playground in the shade next to a pavilion." Sara T. adds: "This campground is pretty close to our house (15 mom drive) so we camp here especially on weekends when we have to be home early or have commitments during the day. Campground is clean. Sites are good size. Playground is good!" This makes the location suitable for families needing shorter trips with children.

Recreation facilities: Wolf Creek State Park Campground maintains a beach and walking paths accessible to campers of all ages. Dusti M. describes: "Very nice close walk to the north boat launch from the campground. Well kept cleared trails. Very nice and well maintained playground in the middle of the campground." These amenities provide activities for children throughout extended stays.

Weekend activities: Robin Hood Woods organizes regular events for younger visitors. Sara W. reports that "we went 4th of July weekend and they even had a golf cart parade and through candy which was so fun for our son." Sarah S. adds that the "pavilion and picnic area near pool and playground perfect for family gatherings or kids birthdays. Even a small game room."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Camp Lakewood requires careful consideration when selecting cabin or RV sites. John T. advises: "The sites are fairly tight. Couldn't erect our screen house even if we wanted to. The staff was friendly and informative. They guided us to our site which was good, I never would have found my site without their help." The tight quarters require advance planning for setup.

Food services: Some cabins offer convenient access to on-site dining. Camp Lakewood maintains a restaurant facility that impressed Russ G., who noted: "Nice, quiet campground. Very friendly hosts, great hours, and an on-site small bar!" Cabin guests can also order pizza according to Rick, who found that "a pizza place is operating on site. Had pizza and wings that were good."
